Even for someone who has been to camp before, the first day of camp can still be scary. Am I going to be in a bunk with my friends? Am I going to like my counselors? Being new to camp makes things 10 times scarier. Making friends can be a big worry to some people and being away from home can be really hard. A: Sloppy Joes! The sloppier, the better. NEWS @ NJW VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 PAGE Nature In this activity, you will take nature walks, make nature-related crafts, play with friendly animals, etc. I especially like playing with the nice snake named Voldemort (and yes, he was named after the character in Harry Potter!). They have sooo many animals in Nature. There is a pig, a few bunnies, a donkey, a goat, a bearded dragon, and so many more! If you are looking for a fun and adventurous but also calming activity, Nature is right up your alley! -Paige, Abi The Lake The Lake is an activity that I would definitely recommend. There is so much fun in store at the lake! My favorite lake activity is Banana Boating. It is super fun, but if you are not a thrill-seeker, I would consider doing one of the other wonderful activities that the lake has to offer (which I will get to later). Basically, up to six people sit on a blown-up banana boat pulled by a jet-ski. Most people who go on the boat want to go fast. Another fun activity at the lake is general boating. There are a lot of boats such as kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, and paddleboards. All are very cool and very fun. There’s also a very long/fun waterslide near the shore as well. And, last but not least, there are the elements. The Rave is a combination of a trampoline and a swing. There is also an Iceberg, a big inflatable water slide that resembles an iceberg! If you like sliding with partners, then you are in luck since you are allowed to go on the iceberg in pairs of two. In conclusion, the lake is a super fun! If you haven’t been there yet, you should definitely try it out! -Sara, Naomi Den The first project this year in Den was graffiti art. The great thing about graffiti art is that you can be as creative and as different as you want. First off, you had to write a word or word sequence and shape the word(s) in your style of choice, including bubble letters, zig zags, etc. Many common word choices were love and peace. Next, you could either use sharpies or paintbrushes to color in your chosen word (splatter painting your work is really fun!). Lastly, you cut it out when you are done. You can also view other campers’ work hanging in the Den. Stop by to check it out! -Julian, Dan “There is so much fun in store at the lake!” 4 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 PAGE Lights! Camera! Action! This year at Nah-Jee-Wah, we have another great production put on by Marceline and her fabulous cast. This year’s Fiddler on the Roof will make you see this timeless classic come to life. This year’s play will be full of singing, dancing, and so much more! Fiddler on the Roof is about 3 Jewish girls who face many challenges about religion and life. The main character is Tzidel who falls in love with a man who her father doesn’t approve of. What will happen next? You will have to see the show to find out! Don’t miss this year’s Fiddler on the Roof! -Madison and Gabby, Hannah Studio In Studio, you may notice a big box of fluff. For what, you may say? For App/ Emoji Pillows of course! You can do anything from a Minecraft pillow to a smiley face emoji! It is easy to make. To start, you need 2 pieces of felt. Then, trace the shape that you want and cut it out. Then, grab a hot glue gun and glue 3 sides together. After, cut out fabric letters and details for your pillow and glue them on. Then, you can stuff your pillow! Once you are done, you can glue the final side shut and TA-DA! You’re done! So what are you waiting for? You have an entire app store of pillows to make! -Aaron, Dan Pottery Wheel If you go to Pottery Wheel, you can make a lot with Ilana and Dalit. When I went to Pottery, I made a bowl that looked like an animal, and who knows? Maybe you will too! But the only way to find out is if you try it yourself! Pottery Wheel is a really fun activity in camp. If you have never been to Pottery before, this is what it is like: First, you take a piece of clay and you put it on the wheel. Then, there is a little step for your foot and when you put your foot on it, it spins the wheel. Then you can put water on the clay and shape it. When you are done, you put your clay on the table to dry. When it is dry, you can paint it. It is a lot of fun! -Jordan, Abi 5 PAGE 6 Where’d the Soda Go? As everyone knows, Camp Nah-Jee-Wah isn’t offering soda at Canteen or in the “soda machines” anymore. Even though most campers prefer drinking soda, the soda ban is really just for the sake of your health. The subject is a matter of being healthier since soda has no nutritional value. Although soda isn’t available in camp anymore, there’s still the delicious tasting Gatorade and the tangy tasting lemonade! Even though it isn’t the same as soda, it’s just as delicious! If you think about it, there’s always a positive side to a negative situation! -Brielle, Abi My first day of camp... It was a dark and stormy day. I was shivering from the cold rain as I walked from my car to my bunk. I wondered what this camp would be like when I finally reached Bunk 15. The clear droplets of rain continued to fall, so I was relieved to go inside a dry building. Six counselors greeted me at the door, and I was surprised to see that I was the first camper there. But, I was excited to start camp! I couldn’t wait to start unpacking and meet all of the other campers that were coming! My bags came soon after I met all the counselors. My bag was jam-packed with millions of things, and I was a little overwhelmed by all the work that I had to do. Luckily, Juliet, one of my counselors, helped me make my bed and unpack all of my things. All of the counselors seemed so friendly. After I unpacked, we all played Jenga. I was having a great time, and I had even more fun when the rest of the kids came. My first day was great! Can’t wait for this summer! -Jasmine, Hannah 4th of July! So, the 4th of July was last week, and I had a great time. You could choose to splatter paint, make leather bracelets, play on an obstacle course, line dance, etc. Line dancing was a lot of fun because it was filled with dancing, singing, and laughing! I also loved splatter painting. It made a huge mess but everyone loved it… after all, it is camp! We also went to the fireworks show which was truly amazing and beautiful. In my opinion, the 4th of July was one of the best days in camp! -Lauren, Hannah NEWS @ NJW VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 PAGE Camp Life Lia from Abi was wondering what the most popular meals at camp were! After narrowing each category down to 3 options, Lia took a poll to find out what the most favorite breakfast, lunch and dinner meals were! Here are the results..! Breakfast Lunch Dinner Pancakes 34% Grilled Cheese 8% Pasta and Meat Sauce 14% Eggs 9% Mac and Cheese 44% Chicken Nuggets 37% French Toast Sticks 57% Quesadillas 48% BBQ 49% To Nervous Campers: “If you Hi, my name is Jonathan and I’m in Levi. It is my third year here, so I know a lot about camp. Here are some tips for new campers… with Tip 1: If you need help with something, always ask a counselor. Tip 2: If you don’t like the hot meal, there’s always a salad bar with pasta and it has a lot of other options, too. Tip 3: Try something new. Camp is full of new opportunities. Tip 4: Try out all of the elements on the lake, even boating. Tip 5: Try talking to new people. You might make new friends with different backgrounds! need help something, always ask a counselor.” Banana Boating! One of my favorite activities in camp is Banana Boating. To do it, you have to get into your bathing suit and then you go down to the lake on Skyland Beach. Then, you put on a life jacket and wait for a lifeguard to help you get on the boat. Then you pull out of the dock and your adventure begins! The cool thing about Banana Boating is that if the boat is going too quickly, too slowly, or you need/want to go back to shore, you can indicate that with just a hand signal. Also, you might fall off, but don’t worry! Falling off of the boat is really fun! All in all, Banana Boating is an amazing activity and I think that if you give it a shot, you’ll probably have a really fun time! -Mikayla, Naomi 7 PAGE 8 Camp Mom Camp Mom is here to help solve all of your camp problems! You can write to her with things that are bothering you and she will try to help you find a solution. To write to her, drop her a letter inside of the box outside of the Den that says “Camp Mom” on it! Dear Camp Mom, This is my first year, and I am so homesick! I miss my Mom and Dad so much! Some of my friends say I should just suck it up and get over it until the end of camp, but I have been crying every night! Please help me! Sincerely, Homesick Dear Camp Mom, Every morning during Clean Up, I work extremely hard to do my job and make my area clean. It is so frustrating to see my bunkmates not clean up their areas. I want to get gold brooms! What should I do? I don’t want to come off as rude. From, Gold Broom Lover Dear Homesick, First of all, it is important to know you’re not alone. A lot of campers get homesick! Don’t worry about your friends. They may not understand what you’re going through. It is important to keep your mind occupied because it will stop you from thinking about home. Camp is full of amazing opportunities and you should make the best of it! -Camp Mom Dear Gold Broom Lover, I understand your frustration! It can be upsetting when you work so hard and your friends don’t. The key is talking to your friends and politely asking them to clean up their areas. A good way to do this is by offering to help your friends clean up their areas when you are done with yours. This will hopefully show them that they need to work harder to clean their areas. -Camp Mom Dear Camp Mom, I don’t like athletics. I don’t play any sports at home and find it hard to fit in with all of my athletic friends. Athletic activities are their favorites, and it is my least favorite activity. How can I have fun during the period? From, Not a Jock Dear Not a Jock, First of all, just because you don’t play any sports at home doesn’t mean you can’t play sports at camp. If you don't try to find something that you’ll have fun doing, then athletics won’t be fun. The best option would be to experiment with different sports. You might not be the best at first, but camp is all about trying new things. -Camp Mom Dear Camp Mom, Sometimes I notice some of my friends are being mean to other girls in our bunk. I don’t want to say anything because they are my friends, but I also feel bad for the girl getting picked on. What should I do? From, Conflicted Bystander Dear Conflicted Bystander, This is definitely a common occurrence within camp. It is hard to tell your friends when they are doing something wrong, but you can’t allow them to bully someone. You should talk to them privately, explaining that they are hurting that person’s feelings. No one should be allowed to make anyone feel bad about themselves. If they still don’t listen, you should talk to your counselor. Your counselor can easily resolve the issue– that’s what they’re there for! -Camp Mom VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 PAGE The Poetry Corner High Ropes -Hannah, Naomi Crazy Awesome Marvelous Positively AMAZING!!!!!
