MONDOVI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SUMMER READING
Students who read do better in school so make sure your child is a reader!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
You will find a Summer Reading list of suggested authors
and More Summer Reading Opportunities included in this
packet for your soon to be second grader. It is recommended
that your child spend some time each day reading.
Encourage them to find a quiet place to read daily. If a
routine is established as soon as summer break starts,
your child is more likely to keep up the reading habit.
We would like your child to read ten books that are Easy, Average, and Challenging Reading
during his/her summer break. Of course, your child may read more books than is recommended,
and you may choose books to read to or with them from any list or source.
Please record the books read on the Independent Reading Log on the back of this sheet.
The Independent Reading Log needs to be turned into your child’s Second Grade Teacher
on the first day of school. Students who return their completed log will be able to take part in
the Summer Reading Celebration activities planned for the fall.
Studies have shown over and over again that students who keep reading during summer break
are much better prepared when school starts in the fall. Children learn by reading as well as
seeing and hearing you read. Learning to be a good reader takes practice and summer is not a
time to take a vacation from reading. Help your child pick out his/her own books from the lists
provided or at their reading level. Make it a fun family experience.
Continued reading in the summer will assure a great beginning in 2nd Grade.
Happy Reading!!!

HELP YOUR CHILD FIGURE OUT
UNKNOWN WORDS
When your child comes across a word they don’t know, use these tips to help
them.
Draw your child’s attention to:
1. Beginning letter(s)
2. Ending letter(s)
3. Prefixes, suffixes, and root words
4. The possibility that it looks like other words they know
5. Clues in the pictures
6. Clues in the sentence or paragraph
Helpful Prompts
1. “Check it slowly with your finger.”
2. “Do you know a word that looks like that?”
3. “Do you know a word that starts like that?”
4. “What do you think it is?”
5. “Does what you say match what you see?”
6. “Does what you say sound right?”
7. “Does what you say make sense?”
Have your child reread the sentence or paragraph to regain the meaning and
to repeat the now known word.
