INFLUENCES OF CONFUCIANISM ON
CHINESE BUSINESSES AND CONSUMERS

For centuries, Confucianism has influenced ethical, philosophical, political, and
religious systems in China. It is the cornerstone of the Chinese society and culture.
Dr. FU Yongju of Qufu Normal University will discuss Confucius teachings and
their relevance to understanding China’s rise and role in today’s global economy
and the behaviors of contemporary Chinese businesses and consumers in the global
marketplace. From a cultural and philosophical perspective, Dr. FU will address the
many aspects of a market that is increasingly and rapidly intertwined with our own.
Dr. FU Yongju is professor of Chinese History, Philosophy and Confucian Studies
at Qufu Normal University in Qufu, China, the birthplace of Confucius. He was
inaugural director of Confucius Research Institute in China (1996-2009) and has
lead-authored a 21-volume book series Study on Confucianism in 20th Century. Dr.
FU is lead researcher of several high-profile projects including Confucianism and its
Modern Implications, and Humanistic Olympics and Confucian Canon all funded
by the National Social Science Foundation of China.
He speaks frequently at international events in Japan,
South Korea and Taiwan. In 2008 he was a visiting
scholar at the Confucius Institute at the University of
Maryland and delivered a speech, Confucian Studies in
20th Century China, at the Library of Congress.

On Oct. 28, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H. Res. 784 to honor the 2,560th anniversary of the birth of
Confucius and to recognize his global contributions to philosophy and social and political thought.
