The country where I live is situated in the heart of Europe.
My country (Land) offers a wide diversity of landscapes:
not only mountains, rivers and lakes, but also forests,
hills and lowlands. Can you guess which country it is? Yes,
you are right: we’re talking about Germany (Deutschland)!
Probably you already know that Germany is a very big country.
But can you imagine that it is approximately 1000 times bigger
than Malta? The huge area of the country makes it possible
for a diversity of landscapes (Landschaften) to be found.
Mountains (Berge) are mainly found in the southwest
of Germany in the region of Bavaria (Bayern), where
the country borders with the Alps. The highest mountain
is called the Zugspitze and is 2962 metres high. Whereas
the southern area is very mountainous (bergig), on the
other hand, the northern area of Germany is very flat (flach). In fact one speaks
of the North German Lowlands. Only the northern regions of Germany lie along the
sea (Meer), in the northwest by the North Sea (Nordsee) and the northeast by
the Baltic Sea (Ostsee), where some very beautiful islands (Inseln) like Borkum,
Helgoland and Rügen are also found.
This means that many Germans do not have access to the sea like in Malta. For this
reason, in every city and town, one finds an indoor and an open-air aquatic centre
(Hallenbad / Freibad) where people can go swimming all year round. As one moves towards the centre of
Germany, one finds more low mountain ranges (Mittelgebirge) and hills (Hügel).
Because of this diversity, the weather can be very different in different regions.
The major rivers (Flüsse) in Germany are the Rhine (Rhein), the Danube (Donau),
the Elbe and the Oder. Many forests (Wälder) are also found in this country at the
heart of Europe. One of the most popular is the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) that
lies in the southern region of Baden-Württemberg.
Nine countries border with Germany, starting from the West with the Netherlands
(Niederlande) and continuing with Belgium (Belgien), Luxembourg
(Luxemburg), France (Frankreich), Switzerland (die Schweiz), Austria
(Österreich), Czech Republic (Tschechische Republik), Poland (Polen) and
Denmark (Dänemark).
This means that the Germans do not necessarily need to catch a plane (Flugzeug) to travel to another country.
They can go by train or with their own transport. Many also opt to go for a few days
or weeks overland with their caravans (Wohnwagen). Since Germany is such
a big country, there is also a lot of what is known as local tourism, that is,
when Germans decide to go on holiday in other regions in their own
country rather than travel abroad. There is so much to see – so
many attractions and events going on and so much fun!
Are you still wondering whether Germany is worth a visit? Come
and visit me soon. 
DIE LANDKARTE
Austria is a federal
republic made up of 9
provinces. The people in
Austria speak German.
Read the information
below about the 9
different Austrian
provinces, have a look
at the pictures on the
map and then write
down the numbers 1 to
9 in the white circles
to find out where the
provinces are!
AUSTRIA

Haydn
1. Burgenland – Capital city: Eisenstadt
This Austrian province is the birthplace of the composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Burgenland lies along Austria’s border
with Hungary and its chief geographic feature is the 22-mile-long Lake Neusiedl - a nature reserve for birds and other wildlife
that make their home in the lake’s reeds.
2. Carinthia – Capital city: Klagenfurt
This is Austria’s southernmost province and is home to many lakes, as well as to Austria’s tallest mountain, the Großglockner.
Carinthia has a long history going back to the Celts and Romans. It has numereous monasteries and churches.
3. Lower Austria – Capital City: Sankt Pölten
Lower Austria is the province that surrounds Vienna. The Danube (die Donau) flows through the middle of Austria’s largest
province, but Lower Austria is also the home of Europe’s first major mountain railway, a scenic rail route over the
Semmering Pass.
4. Upper Austria – Capital city: Linz
Upper Austria is one of Austria’s most scenic provinces, offering the variety of lakes, mountains, and the Danube River.
5. Salzburg – Capital city: Salzburg
The province takes its name from its most famous city, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the historical
power base for the bishops of Salzburg. But the province features many other scenic attractions in the countryside. The film
“The Sound of Music” was filmed in Salzburg.
6. Styria – Capital city: Graz
Styria known for its lush green landscapes and forests, borders with Hungary and Slovenia to the south. It is the land of vines
and wine. Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in a town near Graz.
7. Tyrol – Capital city: Innsbruck
Located in the heart of the Alps, Tyrol is the Austrian province most associated with skiing and winter sports and has twice
hosted the Winter Olympics.
8. Vorarlberg – Capital city: Bregenz
Vorarlberg means the “land beyond the Arlberg.” Austria’s westernmost province has 10,000-foot mountains in the east
(the Arlberg) and Lake Constance (der Bodensee) in the west.
9. Vienna – Capital city of Austria
Vienna is Austria’s famed capital city and is also one of the country’s nine provinces. A city of palaces, castles, monuments,
gardens and parks. Today Vienna is host to many international organizations, including OPEC and the United Nations Office.

Hallo meine lieben Fans!
Hier
gebe ich ein Konzert am Brandenburger Tor. Nach dem Konzert will ich dann Berlin
als Tourist besichtigen, weil ich mich für Geschichte und Kunst interessiere. Ich will in
Museen gehen, die Berliner Mauer besichtigen und Berliner und Currywurst essen.
Elena Jane Goulding ist mein Name, aber alle nennen mich Ellie Goulding. Ich bin
am 30. Dezember 1986 in Großbritannien geboren. Musik ist mein Leben! Ich kann
Gitarre, Klarinette und Schlagzeug spielen, Lieder schreiben und natürlich singen. In
