Selecting IR Transmitting Materials
When selecting a suitable transmitting material for infrared, cell use, wavelength range, solubility and
refractive index must be considered. The mechanical and thermal properties of the material are also
important. Please study the tables below before making a decision. If you are still unsure give us a
call!

material. However it is hygroscopic and fogs easily. Polishes easily.

This material is similar to NaCl but not as popular. It is slightly less
hygroscopic and transmits further into the Infra-red range. Polishes
easily.
An excellent low cost material with an extended transmission range.
Being softer than NaCl it stands mechanical and thermal shock fairly
well. Hygroscopic and fogs slightly faster than NaCl.
Does not fog. Resists most acids and bases. Has a low water
solubility. Durable and precise over the region it transmits. Do not
use with solutions of ammonium salts.
Does not fog. Resists fluorine compounds. Has a low water
solubility. Sensitive to thermal and mechanical shock. Do not use
with solutions of ammonium salts.
Insoluble in water. Slightly soluble in bases and soluble in
Hydrofluoric acid. Birefringent.
This is hygroscopic and fogs easily. Easily scratched. Does not
cleave.
At room temperature or below it has a low water solubility. Material is
soft and will etch in the presence of warm water. Insoluble in acids
but soluble in bases. Ideal for ATR work. Material is toxic. Do not
grind or polish.
Darkens under prolonged exposure to UV light. Material is soft and
will cold flow. Insoluble in water. Soluble in acids.
Insoluble in water. Attacked by strong oxidising agents. Slightly
attacked by HNO3, H2SO4 and KOH.
Material is equal to KRS-5 in general usefulness. Insoluble in water
and highly resistant to most solvents. Brittle material. Thermally
insensitive. Strong interference fringes may occur in short path cells.
Sensitive to thermal shock. Slightly more soluble than CaF2.
Birefringent. Transmits from vacuum ultraviolet into the infra-red.
Chemically inert (including use with aqueous solutions). Soluble in
hot H2SO4. Hard/brittle. ATR reflection losses are approximately
twice that of KRS-5. Temperature sensitive. Transmission decreases
with increasing temperature, becoming opaque at 1250C.

PTFE and Polyethylene IR sample cards
PTFE and polyethylene IR sample cards provide inexpensive
disposable sample substrates for qualitative analysis. The 2” x 4”
cards mount vertically in the universal slide mount in any
spectrophotometer. The cards have a clear aperture of 19mm and
space is provided to write on the card to identify the date of the
analysis, the sample and the name of the analyst. The cards are sold
in packages of 10, 25 and 50 and the polyethylene cards are also
available with two sample substrates (contact us for more info).

Real Crystal® IR sample cards
Real Crystal® IR sample cards provide a conveniently mounted nonabsorbing substrate for qualitative infrared analysis. They are ideal for
liquids, mulls, film casting from solutions and pyrolosis samples. The
2" x 4" cards are available with 9.5mm, 15mm and 19mm clear
apertures and they will fit in the universal slide mount of any
spectrophotometer. Space is provided to write on the card to identify
the date of the analysis, the sample identity and the name of the
analyst. Crystal cover slips are also available. These small square
crystal windows can be used with the 19mm diameter aperture IR
cards to sandwich a sample between the crystal window mounted in
the IR card and the cover slip window.
