Dear Parents,
Parents’ Evenings for Yellow, Red, Orange and Blue Classes:
Tuesday 4th October & Wednesday 5th October.
They will take the form of an opportunity to meet the teacher, share information about your child and discuss
expectations for the year.
There will be a Rights Respecting exhibition created by the children to view in the hall where parents can wait
to see the teacher. Limited cold refreshments will be available.
Just a reminder we are unable to supervise your children during your appointment time now that we no longer
have Mrs Brockway to oversee the hall area.
Appointments are allocated in 10 minute slots. If issues arise which require longer to discuss please arrange a
further appointment to avoid long delays for other parents.
This is an important first meeting and we hope every child will have a parent attend.
Booking is via an online booking system and we will let you know as soon as this is available.
The Spring term parents’ consultation will focus on progress in learning towards ‘Age Related Expectations’.

New for Autumn 2016
We are starting a regular section in the newsletter called ‘Top Tips for Reading at Home’.
This will be written by Mrs Gidman, our school Reading Expert and over the weeks we hope this will build
into a valuable resource for you to help your child be a highly successful reader.
for Reading at home Part 1.
Getting into a routine
It’s the start of the new school year and many of us are getting our children back into good routines. Reading is
often one of them. Every child and every family is different, so choose a time that fits best for you and your
family.
Early readers:
•
Choose a regular time that suits you and your child’s needs.
Does my child like to read and spend time with me straight away when they get home from school?
After they have had tea? At bedtime when it’s quiet and siblings are in bed? Does this time suit you too
and can it be maintained?
•
Consider how your child likes to read, and be led by them. Do they like to sit up at the kitchen table
with you, sit next to you on the sofa, or snuggle up together in bed? Ask your child what they like and
stick to this if you’re both comfortable.
•
Think of reading with your child as a time to connect rather than “home learning”. Chat about the
pictures/text before you read together. Find ways to relate the text to your child’s own experiences at
home or at school.
•
If your child is reluctant or tired that day, start reading the text to your child. They will be learning so
much about reading by just listening to you. You are being a role-model for your child and they will see
how much you love reading, how you read fluently and use expression. Most children will join in with you
after a few pages and you can read together, or let your child take over. If they don’t join in, don’t
worry, talk about the pictures or text and enjoy your time together.
Fluent readers
•
Older fluent readers are likely to read when it suits them, and that’s fine, but can you find a regular
time to chat about the text they reading at the moment? Can you ask questions that will get them to go
back and read a paragraph or chapter to you to support what they’re telling you?
•
Could you choose a text together that you read to your child on a regular basis and use this as a time to
connect with your child?

Remember, reading with your child should be enjoyable and fun, a time you both look forward to. If reading
with your child is difficult at home, do come in and have a chat with us.
Next time – How reading is taught at Chennestone and Beauclerc
Look what we’ve learnt this week!
Blue Class
Blue class have had another busy week and have really settled into our class routines. The children
have each taken home a handwriting book, please see the instructions inside the cover and support
your child with doing this regularly. In Year 2 the children must be able to join their handwriting in
order to achieve age related expectations.
During Maths we have been learning how to use a hundred square, and we have learnt how we can use
this to support us with adding and subtracting ten. Every child took one of these home to show you,
please use this to play number games with your child. For example: what number comes next/ before,
what is 10 more than/ 10 less than any given number. We have also learnt how we can identify odd and
even numbers by looking at the last digit, we use a rhyme to help us remember;
0, 2, 4, 6, 8 even numbers they are great
1, 3, 5, 7, 9 we like odd numbers all the time!
Finally we made ‘Number Gators’ which we use to show more than > and less than <, please encourage
your child to show you how to use these at home.
In English we have learnt to use the best words and not just the first words we think of, as a class we
have been developing word banks which we will be able to use when we are writing independently.
Orange Class
Orange class children have been showing their artistic skills and learning about a country at the same
time. We saw BRAZIL on the world map and then drew a map of Brazil. We were so interested in
Brazil that we decided to see the Brazilian flag and draw it and colour it. We had to persevere and be
resilient to get the best result as quality presentation is very important to us. Counting up to one
hundred and filling in missing numbers in a 100 square kept us busy during Maths. Oh! we also learnt
how to write numbers on words and EIGHT was the most difficult one!! In English we practised writing
some tricky words. We think we will be experts in writing these words because they are used
frequently in reading and writing. The best bit was in Science when we learnt about materials. We
thought material means cloth, but materials are all around us. Some of the materials we use everyday
are wood, metal, paper, stone and fabric. We were not sure what Mr.Singh's shoes were made of. You
should have seen Mr. Singh's face when someone said his shoes were made of plastic!! It's actually
leather which comes from the skin of animals like cows. See you in week 3.
Red Class
This week in red Class we have been continuing to explore the classroom and our learning spaces. The
reception children have been practising recognising letters of the alphabet and finding the letters
that make their name. They have also been exploring Numicon and using it to find numbers to 10. The
year 1 children have been using Numicon to find numbers to 20 and to add different amounts. We have
created a fruit shop learning space where the children have been exploring money and writing shopping
lists.
Yellow Class
This week in Yellow Class we created our class charter. The children thought about different ways we
can make Yellow Class a happy and safe place to learn. The children received a letter from Peter Pan
and Tinker Bell explaining that they are going to have the special job of reminding the children about
all the different points on the charter.
We have been busy creating a doctors learning space where the children have been learning to take on
different roles such as doctors, nurses and patients. In this space the children have been learning to
write each other’s names when entering the doctor’s surgery. We have been also learning to count

using Numicon pieces. On Wednesday, Captain Hook hid some pieces in Yellow Class so the children
decided to go a number hunt. In phonics we have been learning to identify initial sounds. The children
have enjoyed finding different objects that start with the same sound. We have continued to learn
our song ‘Sausages and Snakes.’ We have added some extra verses. You will find in your child’s bookbag
a copy of the song so you can continue to practice at home.
A class information booklet was sent home this week outlining some key information about Yellow
Class. We’re going to be starting P.E next week so can I ask that all children have a named P.E kit on
their peg.
Purple
This week in Purple Class we have welcomed back our retuning children as well as welcoming our new
children into the Nursery . All the children have settled into Nursery this week extremely well and
we have already enjoyed a range of activities from making mud pies in the mud pie kitchen, washing
the nursery bikes and cars in a car wash and shopping in the Green Grocers. The Nursery children
have enjoyed playing together, getting to know each other again and making new friends. We have also
enjoyed music and Tumble Tots with Mrs Totham on Friday. All the Nursery Staff and children are
looking forward to the year ahead and having lots more fun.
