W hether Bob Schulz is performing as a solo artist or with his Frisco Jazz Band, it’s always a great show. We’re looking forward to plenty of high-grade trad jazz when Bob takes the stage as our guest artist in June. Bob Schulz is one of those rare musicians who fits—and is equally at home—in a Jazz Festival or Jazz Party setting. He possesses the talent and the charm to blend in with any band and give audiences exactly what they came for: quality entertainment and plenty of fun. One secret to his success: an attitude of gratitude. “Whatever job I’m on at the moment is my favorite,” he says. In addition to being a fine cornet player, Bob is a superb vocalist. Bob was voted “#1 Jazz Cornetist” in The Mississippi Rag polls for 10 years, 1990-2000, and also “#3 Jazz Vocalist” over the same period. He presents a wonderful repertoire that he performs (cont. on pg. 15) Clint Baker – May 13 Mother’s Day Clint Baker is equally adept on trumpet, trombone, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, banjo, tuba, string bass, and drums. Currently, he plays with: the Yerba Buena Stompers, Hot Club of S.F., Cafe Borrone All-Stars, Reynolds Brothers Rhythm Rascals, Ray Skjelbred Quartet / Cubs, Grand Dominion, and Usonia! Widely regarded as North America’s most popular railroad museum! President’s Message by Tom Duff STJS PRESIDENT <[email protected]> I n just a few weeks, we will kick off the Sacramento Music Festival. This year, we offer all of you some very exciting new talent to complement the great bands and musicians that have entertained us for years. I had the opportunity to preview KB & the Slingstones last month at a 2nd Saturday concert in Sacramento Midtown, and really enjoyed their sound. They bill themselves as Rockabilly, Honkey Tonk and Swing, so if you like to dance, this band is for you. This is just one of the new lineups—come out and enjoy the party. We have many new activities including Crawdad’s River Cantina Stage where great entertainers will be playing for free. Please let them know how much you appreciate their participation. Don’t forget the talented Next Generation musicians that will be playing at the Family Stage, and Delta King dock. We also have additional booth sponsors this year. Our sponsors are an integral part of the festival, and this event could not happen without their generosity. The festival is set for this year. How about sponsoring one of your favorite bands for next year? Get your name recognized when you help bring a band YOU sponsored to Sacramento. This year, we may still have an opportunity for individuals or families to sponsor a booth in Old Sacramento. Think of the prestige of having your own 10ft. x 10ft. sitting area right on the streets of Old Sacramento. Availability is extremely limited, so call the office today. If you have not seen it yet, please visit our festival website at www.sacmusicfest.com. You can get the very latest information on the Music Festival including updates on all the performances, schedules and sponsors. There is also a place to sign up to be a volunteer <http://www.sacjazz.com/volunteers. php>. We are always looking for conscientious individuals to help us plan and execute this great event. Can you believe that this is the 39th year? Come celebrate with us. The STJS Election is just around the corner. We are providing you a great list of candidates to choose from. Read their bios here in this newsletter. Then, please get out and vote on Election Day, June 10th. We can also get you an Absentee Ballot; just contact the office: call (916) 444-2004 or e-mail your request to [email protected] 2 Visit our website www.SacJazz.org and click on the icons to find us on Facebook & Twitter May 2012 For V. P. Tom Duff for President INCUMBENT – Thank You for the support that the Society has given to me as your president since 2010. I am now running for re-election and asking for your vote. In the last two years, we have accomplished much to keep STJS on a solid financial footing. Our costs are lower than they have been in years, and the Society is getting back to financial health. We have made changes that I believe will benefit the society for years to come. I started with the Sac. Jazz Jubilee in 1987 as a volunteer, and I have watched the Society and festival change, expand and contract. I have had several roles within the Society, including: Shuttle Bus volunteer and manager, Jubilee Management member and chair, board member, executive committee chair, as well as president. I am also an employee of a Fortune 500 company and have enjoyed a successful career in the technology arena. I am running again for president because I believe there is much more work to do to make this organization successful. We must be ever vigilant with our cost structure while providing the best music, programs, and benefits for all our members. One of the premier benefits of being a member of STJS is that you have a say in how this organization is run. Voting for your favorite candidate is your right and responsibility. Please cast your ballot either in person or absentee. Vince Bartels...... for Vice President...... I have been a member of the STJS since 1976. My musical career is born out of the education and experiences afforded me by the STJS. I am committed to preserving and providing those benefits to future generations of musicians and fans. I am a past President (for 3 years) and Board Member of the STJS. As a current member of the Jubilee Management Committee, I provide business and administration consulting as requested under the direction of the STJS Executive Director. On the Talent Selection Committee, I serve at the direction of the Artistic Director. I have also served on past Election Committees. As President/CEO of Nelmar Construction, Inc. since 1998, I have extensive daily experience writing budgets, managing projects and day-to-day operations. I am willing and able to serve as requested. During my term as President, many necessary changes in the business model (operational procedures) were identified; then, plans were put in place, and STJS has continued to implement those changes. While some of these changes stir the hearts and emotions of many, including me, they are sound business decisions (part of a critical transitional phase), which will allow STJS to continue to provide “Live Performances” and “Educational Programs” to serve its core purpose. If elected, I will help STJS grow into the future and continue to Preserve Traditional Jazz. Ron Jones for Vice President INCUMBENT – I’ve been a drummer from the age of 14 and a member of STJS since 1984. I served several terms as a Board Member in the ‘90s, and am currently serving as your Vice President. I’ve enjoyed my tenure as VP and believe we have accomplished a great deal, but there is still a lot to be done. I have been an active volunteer for the STJS’ Trad Jazz Youth Band Festival since its inception in 2006, and my wife, Patti, and I co-sponsor the Up Close and Personal fundraiser, which in three years raised over $25,000 for this annual youth program. I have the ability to get quickly to the source of a problem or issue and offer a workable solution that benefits the society as a whole, and I believe our youth programs are the key to keeping our music alive. I am grateful for the support I’ve received from everyone these past two years. Lisa Negri-Bartels for Treasurer INCUMBENT – I’ve served as Treasurer for the past 4 years and have been grateful for the opportunity to work with this great organization and wonderful people. I’ve supported the changes the Board has made to put the Society into a better financial position. I believe we’ll continue to face challenges until the economy improves, but I believe we can survive those challenges based on the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. I’ve been a bartender at Riverfront Refuge for 6 years, and I currently work for the State of CA as a supervisor/ auditor. STJS OFFICERS Note there are 2 candidates for V.P. VOTING HOURS: Balloting will take place during Jazz Sunday, noon – 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 10, 2012 May 2012 MUSICIAN Board Member — Vote for 2 of these 4 candidates, below Kristy Reed Paul Edgerton Alan Ginter Jeff Kreis INCUMBENT – My first appearance at STJS was in 1980 and I’ve held a Gold Card since 1983. I have served as a judge for scholarship & TNT auditions, and have served as a clinician for Adult Jazz Camp. Since becoming a board member I’ve taken over the duties as Youth Band Coordinator for our yearly festival, as well as arranging for youth bands monthly on our main stage. As a member of our Music Committee I’ve been proactive in bringing such guest artists as Brian Casserly, Julie Jules, and David Bennett, and am working on many more! I’ve performed in 30 STJS Festivals, and appeared with the Temptations, Drifters, Lawrence Welk Live Show, Big Tiny Little, Cab Calloway, Jimmy Dorsey Orch., Glenn Miller Orch., Benko Jazz Band, Allotria, Jazz Band Ball, Sutterville Stompers, Riverbank Blues Band, Pete Allen Jazz Band, Bobby Gordon…. and most currently with West MainStreet. My experience tells me there’s no place like home. We have an incredible tradition at STJS, and I aim to preserve it! There has been significant change, some positive, other only speculative. I fight to see traditional jazz maintain it’s tradition here at STJS. In my forty years as a professional musician, I’ve played with the Hot Tomatoes Dance Orchestra and Your Father’s Moustache Band of Denver, worked at Walt Disney World and Rosie O’Grady’s of Orlando, and been a member of the Wooden Nickel Jass Band and the Fulton Street Jazz Band of Sacramento (and even a stint with Igor’s JazzCowboys). I first appeared at the Sacramento Jubilee with a youth band in 1982, and have been a paid performer most of the years since then. I am a Gold Card Member. My son, Thomas, plays trombone and has benefitted from the jazz education programs offered by STJS. Several years back, I served as a Musician Board Member. Rumor has it that there is still more I can do for the jazz society; all I need is your vote. This is Alan’s 52nd year as a professional performing musician on four continents. After 15 years during the heyday of the legendary Catskill Mountains Resort area playing for a veritable Who’s Who in the entertainment world, he has since played with such diverse musicians as Zoot Sims and Mose Allison, Conway Twitty, and the Sierra Nevada Camerata Baroque Chamber Orchestra. “I learned early that everybody needs a bass player.” With a B.S. in Communications, a B.A., M.A., and CA Teaching Credential in Music, Alan has been teaching music at every level, from Kindergarten through University, and has developed into a Music Curriculum Specialist. He has presented his students at music festivals all over Europe. Alan started playing at the Sacramento Jubilee throughout the 1980s with Tom King’s Band featuring Ted Dulcy. He has been a Gold Card member since 2003 and can be counted on to play behind the Vocal Set in the Gold Card Room every Jazz Sunday. “If elected, I believe I will be a positive influence on the Board and a strong supporter of Jazz Education”. Coming from a family of trad jazz musicians, STJS has been a part of my life from day one, and has played a central role ever since. From my time as a youth band member through my college years at UCD, to my recurring position as counselor at the STJS youth camp, and into my current life as a young professional at the Sacramento Children’s Home, the Society has provided me support and been a positive environment for my development both as a musician and as a human being. I firmly believe that STJS is a wonderfully unique organization that has a vital role to play in the preservation of our music, a true American art form. I would be honored to be given an opportunity to give back to the organization that has given me so much. Thank you for your consideration, and please feel free to ask me any questions or to just say “hi.” May 2012 STJS NON-musician Board Member Dave Becker Dennis Grimes Scott Kaufman Bob Mattingly INCUMBENT – I have learned a lot as being a board member for the past two years on the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society (STJS), I am currently Co-Chair of the Membership Committee and Chairperson of the Governance Committee. I assist at Raffle table on Jazz Sundays (the guy that sits behind the table), one of the many volunteers at the Traditional Jazz Youth Band Festival (TJYBF) and a volunteer any place they need assistance. I have an Associate degree in Applied Science in Computer Information System Web Development. Retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years. Employed with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for 26 years as Facility Manager, Business Unit Environment, Health and Safety Manager, and many other positions. My wife is Kathy, “the Raffle Lady.” INCUMBENT – I have been a member of the STJS since 1985. I am a member of the Festival management committee, and I have had the pleasure of being on the board for the last year and a half. I am hopeful that I can continue to be a member of the Board so I can advocate for the Festival and the volunteers. I have been a volunteer at the festival for twenty-six years in the financial area. I started in ticket sales and, with my wife, moved into couriers. We advanced to manage the courier group for the past 10 years. Last year, I was asked to become the coordinator of the financial group, overseeing the finance department, couriers, ticket sales and admission sales. I assisted in moving the warehouse along with other members of the Board. I negotiated and set up the online admission ticket sales with the assistance of the STJS webmaster. With my financial background I will continue to monitor the society’s expenses so that we can stay on track back to financial stability. INCUMBENT – Scott Kaufman has proudly served on the STJS Board of Directors for the past six years believing strongly in the value of preserving and promoting the American art form of Traditional Jazz. In 2005, Scott opened Midtown Stomp, a swing dance venue dedicated to the preservation of Lindy Hop and other vintage forms of dance done to Traditional Jazz & Swing music. This venue would become the largest weekly swing dance in Northern California. Scott brings a background in marketing, event planning, and technology together in creative ways to promote events. He has planned the Jubilee’s Swing Dance Contest since it began 6 years ago. After watching hundreds of people each month dance to Traditional Jazz & Swing music, Scott believes strongly that people love Traditional Jazz but just don’t know it. I started attending the Jazz Festival back in the early 80s when I lived in Southern Calif. I would come up for the good times and the great music. When I moved to Sacramento, I was fortunate to have Bob Graham as a customer. He got me on the Communications team in 1988, and I have been there ever since. I am now the manager of Communications and also serve on the festival management team. In my daily life, I am president and gen/mgr of a remodeling construction company and also have a distributorship for an international manufacturing company that deals in parts washing and pressure washers.I have served on the board of Christmas in April (now Rebuild Together) from it’s early stages till about 2003. I served on the board of my church for over 10 years up to 2011. Now, I am part of the Music Committee and the Praise Team. If elected, I will try to keep the festival in the black and grow the volunteer list.Running a daily business and being married to an accountant, I know what is fiscally responsible. I hope that after reading this, you will vote for me. I will do my best for the festival and the volunteers. May 2012 SUMMARY VOTE FOR 3 of these 7 candidates 2012 SLATE OF CANDIDATES for STJS Board of Directors Marsha Lee Beth Scott Dennis Speciale I have been a Jubilee Volunteer since 1987. This year makes 25 for me. My first assignment was at the H St. Transfer, then the Convention Center, and I finally found my “Jubilee Home” at the Hyatt Ballroom where I am the Site Manager along with my daughter. I will do my best to keep the festival going. I love it because it is so much fun. The things that give me pleasure during the Festival are the smiles on the faces, toe tapping, dancing and everyone having a great time. It really makes me happy when an attendee says “thank you for doing this.” I truly believe that music is the universal language.Everyone is getting along and there is no language barrier. I will also support the many activities throughout the year. It is so important to keep the youth interested and nurture their talents. It is great that so many types of music have been incorporated into the festival, drawing younger people, and that is what we need. The festival has something for everyone. What a dull world if everyone liked the same thing. I work full time at Zurich NA (Insurance) in the Premium Audit Department as an Audit Reviewer. I look forward to seeing you at the Sacramento Music Festival.. As a longtime member of STJS, and on the Membership Committee for a number of years, I can usually be seen at the Membership Table renewing or opening memberships during Jazz Sundays and at the festival. I taught high school English early in my life and now am the publications editor for a private non-profit organization where I meet deadlines, prioritize printed projects and am a member of that Board. I direct a group of seniors, known as the Rascals, in variety shows for that organization. With past terms as secretary, parliamentarian and president of other organizations, I anticipate positive experiences should I be elected to the Board of Directors for the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. My family originally moved to the Sacramento Area in 1956, and we have fond memories of the old state fair grounds and going to matinees at the Alhambra and Crest Theaters. My most treasured memories are those times I spent with my father at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. My father became a volunteer in 1977 and was the Jubilee’s greatest advocate. I started attending the Jubilee in the late ‘70s, and finally became a volunteer in 1987. I became the Ticket Control Manager in the late nineties and have been a manager ever since. I believe the Sacramento Music Festival to be a cultural jewel for the city and will work hard to keep it. I am proud of the Society’s youth programs and will always be its biggest promoter. With my experience, I believe that I would be an asset to the Board. I was born in Fairfield at Travis AFB in 1952. I am a lifelong resident of California, a Vietnam Era Veteran. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration–Accounting. I am currently employed at the CA State Controller’s Office as an Accounting Administrator. Dennis Speciale Dante Club Notes By “The Cricket” [who is NOT the AATJ editor] B lack tie and fox trots. Varsity sweaters and tweed knickers and SWING! That’s Glenn Crytzer and His Syncopators. What a blast from the past! They brought their own microphones—big enough to play baseball with. And they played like crazy! “Dancing Cheek to Cheek,” “If You’re a Viper,” “The Panic is On,” “Spreadin’ the Rhythm Around,” “Yacht Club Swing.” Then there were the originals from the pen of Glenn himself, nearly indistinguishable from the classic styles. In fact, the band has a whole CD worth of Glenn’s compositions. Glenn brought three band members with him from Seattle: Steve Mostovoy (trumpet), Mike Daugherty (drums) and bassist Dave Brown (well known to STJS from many appearances with Uptown Lowdown, Stumptown and others). They were joined by RSJO’s Don Neely on reeds and Bonnie Otto on piano. Bonnie also slipped on stage to join the Set 3 band, the Crescent Katz: Jeff Kreis, Brandon Au, Greg Sabin, Kellen Garcia and Patrick Skiffington. They’re a marvelous representation of young musicians who’ve discovered what FUN it is to play classic jazz— and they communicated that fun to an enthusiastic audience. Ryan Clark, Alyssa Clark, and Nolan Cyr Bonnie Otto (Suggestion: Go back and read Felicia Weatherly’s article in last month’s AATJ: “Unexpected Perks of Being a Teenage Trad Jazz Musician.” The list was actually written by Teenage Trad Jazz Musicians!) Jane Reinmuth praised bassist Robert Dolan for his support in the Tailgate sets. Close to his last time for a while, though. He said he has signed with Mills Music in Washington to an internship in instrument repair, after which he will be working in one of their nine locations there. Way to GO, Robert. Congrats. Robert started on TG Set 1 with Ira Greenstein and Mike O’Hearn, Howard Pearson, Rich Lockwood, Rich O’Day and Susan Phillips, with singers Pat Galyean and Jane Reinmuth. Then he skipped over to TG Set 3, with Lee Monthei, Pearson, Frank Lindskoog, and a newbie: drummer Kai Norton. I’ll catch up with Kai next month, and get some details. Glenn Crytzer & His Syncopators Glenn Crytzer, Dave Brown, Mike Daugherty, Steve Mostovoy, Don Neely Dave Mitchell Crescent Katz PHOTOS BY NANCY GIFFIN April 15, 2012 Glenn Crytzer & His Syncopators Set 1 was “Nolan’s Picks”: Nolan Cyr, Alyssa Clark, Jeffrey Peel, Clayton LaFlamme, Dexter Williams and Ryan Clark. They’re the next Next Gen, developing their own style and stage presence—so impressive. We saw several of them later in the Tailgate. Jeffrey Peel, a ninth grader at Rio Americano, just turned 15, and (a stat we don’t usually mention) is 6’1”! He said he’s been playing trombone for 2 years. Drummer Ryan Clark has known Nolan since before Arden Middle School and Rio Am.; he’s been playing drums for 4 years now. Dancing on Main Stage May 2012 Did you know Rich Lockwood is currently President of the San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society? I’ll have to be more respectful. Also an uptick in respect for Election Committee Member Kathy Becker for her efficient delivery of Nominated Slate of Officers, after claiming to be paralyzed by stage fright. Hubby Dave squealed on her, though: She’s no longer stage shy—she actually SANG at Round Table. TG Set 2 was led by Andrew Stephens, joined by Ken Champion on trumpet. Todd Morgan was on piano and Willie Erickson was on tuba. Tom Carpenter came in on reeds, with Larry Salerno on drums. Claude Purcell was the vocalist. Ryan Enoki brought along his dad, Kazu, to hear him play in TG Set 4 with Charlie Gehlbach and Dave Mitchell, Larry Tyrell, Jay Paulus, Carpenter, Billie Menz, Dave Sieber and Fred Pepper, with Barbara Paulus handling the vocals. Jeffrey Peel shared the trombone position with Bob Summers on TG 5. Mike O’Hearn split the trumpet spot with Kurt Olsen. They had Dave Chan on piano, Fred Pepper on banjo and Todd Morgan on drums! Renee Alarcon and Diane Kelly were the vocalists. Diane also participated in the Gold Card Room Vocal Set, singing “Dancing Cheek to Cheek” to her husband, Dave. As usual, the Vocal Set had some beautifully rendered favorites (“In the Wee Small Hours” by Keith Williams, “Black Magic” from Harry DuVall, “God Bless the Child” from Francesca Homan, “I Thought Mike Daugherty Pete Salerno Steve Mostovoy George Cecil May 2012 About You” from Pat Kennedy), some stompin’ hot renditions (“Stagger Lee” from Alan Ginter, “Sweet Georgia Brown” from Todd Morgan, “Stompin’ at the Savoy” from Gwenetta Brooks), and one or two that we hardly ever hear (“Some Time Ago” from T Jackson and “I Could Write a Book” from Pam Lehnert). As usual, they were backed by Ken Meyers, Alan Ginter and Charlie Hull, with Larry Salerno on the drum throne. Speaking of Salernos, you hardly ever see Larry and Pete in the same place at the same time, but there they were. Pete was on GCR Set 5 with Mitchell, Tyrell, Lockwood, Bill Bua, Jimmy Spero, Scotty Harper and Benny Marcelo. As I was talking of drummers (!), long time no see George Cecil. What a pleasure. He was in the “special” band Charlie Gehlbach put together for GCR Set 4. Charlie called in Paulus, Bob Noren, (or was it Norm Gary?) Otto, Spero and Mickey Bennett, and it was HOT! Carl Warmdahl was the first sign-up for GCR Set 1, ultimately playing with Tom Chamberlain, Ken Champion, Pearl Nicolino and Rita Sewell. Nolan Cyr joined Lockwood and Bua, Lindskoog, Eddi Benjamini, Jack Scott and Steve Gonsoulin for GCR Set 2. Eddi, by the way, could ONLY play one set because he has spinal stenosis—very painful. We hope the (cont. on page 10) “SUGAR” Willie & “Satch’” Don Neely Scotty Harper PARASOL WINNER Jay Paulus w/ Glenn Crytzer Dante Club Notes (cont.) docs can give you some relief, Eddi. In fact, lots of folk on the sick call roster this month. The Rectors of ZOOM had an especially bad few weeks. Ray was hospitalized with diverticulitis, and as soon as he was sprung, Becky was admitted with congestive heart failure, so they were both listening but taking it easy on Sunday. The Sound Crew’s Olivia Sanchez was also hospitalized for a few days with congestive heart failure. She has strict orders from her Crew mates to lay off cord stringing and rug taping. Worst of all, Gordon Machado is between treatments for bladder cancer. He says he’s a toe-tapper this month but hopes to be back dancing soon. I know he was miserable having to just sit and watch. Tom Arnold was dancing injured, as it were. He first told me that “old women are tough!” (referring to dance partner Ingrid Wolbart). He said the black eye looked bad but the ribs hurt worse! He confessed that he tripped over his own feet rounding third base, and took a tumble. As a Senior League baseball player and staunch STJS member, he confided that he likes fast balls, fast cars, fast dancing and—at age 80, he can’t remember the fourth fast thing he likes! (Tee hee, you bad boy.) Lots of dancers “liked” all three of the day’s bands, but Ken and Linda Champion danced nearly every number the Syncopators played. Linda did have to drag Ken’s nearly lifeless body off the dance floor a couple of times to re-hydrate, but he perked right up and was back out there. The most elegant dancers were Tineke Peldens and Rudy Velek, elegant not to be interpreted as not having lots of fun. Mike and Patty Schneider certainly were enjoying the guest band, as were Pat & Ginger Devaney. Hey, Burt Wilson was in the house, and seemed to be suffering no ill effects from his knee replacement—so glad. Aforementioned pianist Benny Marcelo brought his lovely wife, Natalie, with him for the day. Bill McMartin introduced the gorgeous Velia Arrey, self-described as a “‘40s-style singer.” Harry DuVall’s cousin, Bill Moriarity was there with his wife, Elizabeth, and Rose and Mel Nunes. Mel went to school with Harry; sang with him “long ago.” One suspects there is more to the story. Bass player Ana Hansen told me she found us online and had her mother, Cari Porter, bring her to STJS for the day. We made sure Ana was introduced to Tailgate Room Director Jane Reinmuth, supporter of all young musicians. The Secret Life of a Sac. Music Fest. Teenager by Felicia Greenwood Weatherly T his year at the Festival is a better time than ever to be a young musician. First, there are more Next Generation bands than there have been in years—new bands to hear and new friends (and future connections!) to be made. You have to love that. So you’ve played your set and you want to just hang out and chat with your new friends. Sadly, the Hat Wrack has sometimes runs hot and cold on how they feel about a bunch of rowdy young musicians making it their go-to hang. Good news! The youth bands now have their own Hospitality Room with snacks and soda at the Holiday Inn! During the day and early (by jazz standards) evening, the room will be open to youth musicians to get ready for performances, talk, relax, change costumes, etc. I know what you are thinking, “WHOA! Those are super great ideas! There can’t possibly be MORE new and exciting changes for young musicians!” But, I am happy to inform you, yes there are! On Monday, the last day of the festival, there will be a special set called “Draga’s Picks” that will feature Next Generation musicians hand selected by Bob Draga himself! These fortunate musicians will get to play a set with Bob just before the ultimate highlight for youth musicians (please hold on to your hats here!): NEXT GENERATION MUSICIANS GET THEIR OWN CLOSING CEREMONY! That’s right! Young musicians get their own event to come together before everyone returns home to say good-byes, jam, recognize musicians and celebrate our music. The details are still in the works, but it is certainly going to be something to see! All these changes are new for 2012 and reflect the vision of Kristy Reed and the Education Committee to create an exceptional experience for our Next Generation Musicians. Those of you who are “current generation” musicians and fans, think about checking out the new Closing Ceremonies, or at least spending some time at a youth venue. They really are the future of our music! Even for former youth musicians like myself! 2 NOTE a schedule swap at the Straw Hat (Mather Field): TNT will play on May 9, and Dr. Bach on May 16. Horrifying, the number of jazz festivals that have ceased operations in the last few years. With YOUR help, that will NOT happen to Sacramento. You can find most any style of jazz you like (lots of TRAD for me, thanks), so get your badges TODAY. 2 10 2012 Music Lesson Awards Ceremony on Sun., May 13th at 12:40 pm on Main Stage May 2012 A SAMPLING of SETS at the 2012 Sacramento Music Festival FRI. 7:00pm @ Laughs Unlimited: Great Guitars w/ Steve Homan, John Reynolds, Nahum Zdybel GUESTS 2012 Emperor Bob Ringwald, 2010 Emperor Bob Draga, Allan Vaché, Russ Phillips, Jason Wanner FEATURED JAZZ BANDS Best of Swing Quartet Nicolas Montier (sax, from France), Larry Vuckovich, Jennifer Leitham, Vince Bartels SAT 11:30am @ Courtyard D’Oro: Clarinet Special Dave Bennett, Hal Smith & Ray Templin SAT. 10:00am PARADE Rebecca Kilgore Trio Becky Kilgore, Dan Barrett, Rossano Sportiello Stephanie Trick Trio Stephanie Trick, Phil Flanigan, Danny Coots SAT 4:00pm @ Laughs Unlimited Mardi Gras Band TRAD 101st Army Dixieland JB, Big Mama Sue Quartet, Bill ‘n’ Eddie, Black Tuesday, Catsnjammer, Dr. Bach & the Jazz Practitioners, Dutch’s Gramercy 6, FreeBadge Serenaders, High Sierra, Kristy Reed & West MainStreet, Mardi Gras Band, New Black Eagle, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Original Wildcat Jass Band (with Ray Templin), Reynolds Brothers, Riverside Rogues, The Professors, Uptown Lowdown, plus 15 YOUTH bands! In Loving Memory Steve Schofer February 27, 2012 Robert Emil Syftestad March 13, 2012 Oliver Black March 17, 2012 Nan Bostick March 26, 2012 14 May 2012 Bob Schulz (cont.) (cont. from page 1) with a crisp, clear sound—swinging, sweet and hot, and appealing to all ages. Robert “Bob” Schulz was born in Wonewoc, Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. He was a band director for 17 years before joining the Turk Murphy Jazz Band of San Francisco (1979). He performed with this legendary band up until Murphy’s death in 1987. He went on to form the Bob Schulz Frisco Jazz Band and make numerous studio albums. Additionally, Bob has released recordings as Bob Schulz & His Chicago Rhythm Kings, Bob Hirsch & Bob Schulz and the Midcoast Reunion Jazz Band, and Bob Schulz & the Riverboat Ramblers. On his website, bobschulzjazz.com, Bob tells the story of his “audition” for Turk Murphy’s band. The opening paragraph offers a glimpse into the past, when trad jazz was supreme: “In 1979, I was playing at the St. Louis Ragtime Festival in St. Louis, MO with the Riverboat Ramblers Jazz Band (a group that was founded in Ft. Lewis, Washington during the Berlin Crisis in 1961). Turk’s band, along with the Salty Dogs, the Happy Jazz Band (now known as Jim Cullum Jazz Band), the St. Louis Ragtimers, Ernie Carson’s Castle Jazz Band as well as a few others, were regular performers for this weeklong Mississippi River jazz festival in June, on the Goldenrod Showboat. I have to say, this was one of the best festivals ever. I know we have great ones now, but imagine being on a Showboat, docked on the Mississippi River & playing Jazz—wow!” For those who don’t know “the rest of the story” about how he came to California and play in Turk’s band, Bob goes on to say: “Ernie had convinced me (after a gin & tonic or two), to join him and sit in with the Satly Dogs on the River Barge. We both placed paper bags on our heads and played a tune or two with the Dogs. I really don’t know where Turk’s vantage point was during all of this, but apparently he thought it was worth the gamble to give me a try, and I’m certainly glad he did! A week later he wrote me a letter, offering me the job at Earthquake McGoons in San Francisco. I was just recently divorced and was still a music teacher in Wisconsin, so I asked for a leave of absence, but was turned down. Actually that made the decision much easier. I gave up my teaching position and moved to California. There were drawbacks however. I had to leave my three children, my mother, as well as dozens of friends and students. It definitely made me dig in and start my career all over again. I have to thank John Gill once again for recommending me. It certainly changed my life... and for the better.” June 10 is STJS Election Day, so in addition to coming out to hear Bob Schulz play some tasty jazz, please take time to review all candidate bios in this newsletter, and then place your ballot at the next Jazz Sunday. 2 Absentee Ballot Request For STJS Election on Sunday, June 10, 2012 STJS Secretary: Please send absentee ballot(s) to Name_ __________________________________________ Address_ _________________________________________ City/State/Zip______________________________________ OR E-mail it to: ____________________________________ Anyone requesting this ballot must be an STJS member in good standing as of June 10, 2012.
