Using Special Characters on the iPad Looking for the traditional division symbol or superscript on your iPad keyboard? The bad news is, it's not there. The good news is that this sheet is going to show you how to add it. We use a feature called keyboard shortcuts. This allows you to type a sequence of letters and the iPad turns that into the actual symbol. Example , while typing we could type // but what you will see after you hit the space button is: ÷ .Tada. The initial set up requires a little bit of patience, but its worth it: Step 1 - have a look at the table below and decide which symbol you want to add Step 2 - on the iPad - tap settings > general > keyboard. Now tap 'add new shortcut' Step 3 - add the shortcut . Copy the symbol you want from the table below. (Double tap it and then press copy). Now paste that where it says 'Phrase' (single tap > paste). Finally next to shortcut , type the letter combination you want to use - we have recommended some below. Character Shortcut name ÷ // Division ² Sq2 Squared ³ Sq3 Cubed ⁿ Sqn To the n ₁ Sub1 Subscript 1 ₂ Sub2 Subscript 2 Ω Ohm Ohm symbol µ Mcro Micro √ root Square root chk Tick mark Page 1 of 2 In use Anytime you have the keyboard in any application, just type the shortcut and the symbol will be place - so in my example I just type // and up comes ÷ instead. Or if I type sq2 up comes ² ! Taking it further You can add as many of these shortcuts as you like. The best way to grab the symbols is via an app - we recommend Unicode Character Map : https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/unicode-character-map/id504833158?mt=8 Page 2 of 2
