Alternative

theatres
Sports and music events
drive revenue growth
Wimbledon 2011 in 3D distributed to theatres
throughout the world is the latest high profile
alternative content event that offers cinema
owners exciting new sources of revenue and
audiences to be shown on the fantastic Sony
Digital Cinema 4K with RealD™ system,
which delivers an “easy on the eyes” 3D
experience (see full story on page 5).
Alternative content such as sports, music
concerts, opera and ballet is a growing
presence on cinema screens, as Sony
Digital Cinema 4K digitisation of the global
screen estate progresses.
According to analysts Screen Digest, the
total US market for alternative content was
already worth $112m in 2010, which
accounted for 58 percent of global
alternative content cinema revenues of
nearly $200m. The biggest alternative
content events so far have been the New
York Met’s live opera, which have been
hugely popular in the US and worldwide.
“Market growth and exhibitor interest is also
attracting new entrants into the alternative
content arena, from technical providers,
global cultural and sporting brands,” notes
Screen Digest senior analyst David Hancock.
Alternative content is attractive to theatre
owners because it can boost the average
weekly occupancy of their theatres. Other
recent events included Carmen in 3D,
recorded at the Royal Opera House in
London.

Elsewhere, soccer has again been a draw,
following widespread distribution of the FIFA
World Cup last year. The intense rivalry
between Istanbul soccer teams Galatasaray
and Fenerbahçe was played out in 3D in
cinemas in Turkey earlier this year. Satellite
television provider Digiturk partnered with
Sony to produce and air the match live over
the Digiturk Plus and HD platform as well as
to two Sony 4K cinema screens in Istanbul –
one for each set of fans.

Alternative content opportunities
Alternative content is a growing market for cinemas
worldwide, led by screenings of live sports and music
events. Live 3D events are set to increase. Wimbledon 2011
is the pinnacle of this trend. With hundreds of cinemas
across the world taking live 3D feeds, the Wimbledon
championships are boosting occupancy at theatres that have
invested in Sony Digital Cinema 4K.
Sony 4K first for DCI
The Sony 4K projection systems are
the industry’s first to successfully
complete the full range of compliance
tests for specifications required by
Digital Cinema Initiatives, LLC (DCI).
The SRX-R220/LMT-200 and SRX320/LMT-300 integrated systems,
including projector and media block,
have passed all DCI compliance tests,
and are listed on the DCI web site.
Greenland cinema
Greenland’s premiere cultural venue
has invested in Sony 4K. The Katuaq
in Greenland’s capital city, Nuuk, has
installed the Sony 4K projection
system with RealD 3D technology in
its Katuaq Bio cinema. The venue
combines a 500+ seat cinema with
a theatre and arts spaces.
“We have chosen Sony 4K
technology because it offers our
audience the best possible picture
and cinema experience,” says Ove
Heilmann, Cinematic and Banqueting
Manager at Katuaq.
Showcase Reading
Showcase Reading has become the
latest of the chain’s cinemas in the
UK to be fully digital, with the
installation of Sony Digital Cinema
4K projection systems in all 14 of
the cinema’s screens. Karen Fox,
General Manager of Showcase UK
says: “The introduction of Sony Digital
Cinema 4K screens will allow us to
offer the ultimate digital cinema
experience to all of our audiences.
These systems provide outstanding
image and sound quality.”

As cinema owners from California to Greenland already
know, the benefits of Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection
include not just an outstanding customer experience at the
highest 3D on 4K quality, but the ability to tap into the
conventional and alternative revenue opportunities opened
up by the digital cinema revolution.

MCL in Hong Kong plays events on Sony 4K projectors
Concerts by Japanese team band AKB48 have been
successfully transmitted and shown live in cinemas
in Hong Kong using Sony Digital Cinema 4K
technology. Sony PCL who operates the alternative
digital contents distribution in Japan as Livespire,
distributed Japanese super idol group AKB48
events in January in Japan and Hong Kong, then in
June in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South
Korea.
In Hong Kong, Multiplex Cinema Limited (MCL)
showed the live events on its Sony 4K projectors.
The cinema group, which operates five cinemas in
Hong Kong and two in mainland China, downloaded
the live HD signals for both events via satellite to
three screens in Hong Kong, two of which are
installed with Sony 4K projectors.
“The AKB48 live broadcast event is definitely a
milestone-setting event both technically and
commercially,” says June Wong, General Manager of
MCL. “The live broadcast streaming was very
smooth and the uplink and downlink of signals were
very stable, the visuals were being encoded and
decoded and the visual and audio are restored
impressively on MCL cinema screens. MCL also
earned very good publicity feedback. We are the first
cinema circuit in Hong Kong to experience the live
broadcast of a concert event and it was very well
received in the market.”
Wong says alternative content is becoming
increasingly important. “Alternative content is getting
popular and has started to become a worldwide
cinema trend,” she says. MCL plans to screen more
live and pre-recorded events.
MCL was the first cinema group in Hong Kong to
invest in Sony 4K projectors. “The screen size of
MCL JP Cinema is huge and the Sony 4K system is
the perfect match to empower enough brightness
and sharper images in the projection,” Wong says.

Revenues of leading German chain
rise thanks to Sony 4K campaign
Leading German cinema chain CinemaxX is reaping
record rewards thanks to its visionary investment in
digital projection technology. The exhibitor, which
operates 292 screens in 34 complexes, including three
in Denmark, began its transition to digital 4K and 3D
with Sony 18 months ago believing that the technology
would give it a substantial competitive edge.
Since then, the publicly listed company, controlled
by the Tele-Munchen Group and headquartered in
Hamburg, has seen revenues rocket with the help of
a marketing campaign which extols the virtues of the
unrivalled 3D quality on the Sony Digital Cinema 4K
with RealD system.
“CinemaxX has always been one of the major
innovators when it comes to cinema in Germany –
from the design of the auditoria right down to the
smallest technical detail,” says CinemaxX
spokesperson, Arne Schmidt. “Working with Sony,
we can set trends for the cinema of the future. We
have created a whole new cinematic experience with
a level of quality not seen before, and therefore
encouraged audiences to go to the cinema.”
CinemaxX has installed nearly 100 Sony
SRX-R220 and SRX-R320 projectors with the RealD
3D adaptor enabling each multiplex to brand its 3D
experience as Maxximum 3D. The company also
uses the Sony brand to communicate to its audience
that the experience they will receive is delivered with
Sony Digital Cinema 4K technology.
“When we decided to use the combination of
Sony 4K and RealD we were sure to have the perfect
technical base for a perfect 3D image. Sony was the
only company able to deliver 4K technology to our
screens which will be the technology not just for
today but for tomorrow.”
Recently, CinemaxX has screened live opera from
the Met in New York and ballet from the Bolshoi
theatre in Moscow.
“Even the Royal Wedding was part of a special
screening in some cinemas,” notes Schmidt. “The
market for alternative content continues to grow.”
Oliver Pasch, Head of Digital Cinema Europe at
Sony Professional, comments: “Over the last four
years we've been urging exhibitors to move to 4K to
differentiate their movie experiences with the
experience in the home, which was 2K or HD. That
story has now changed. In April, Sony introduced a
professional camera that delivers true 4K resolution
and beyond, and consumer 4K products seem to be
on the horizon, so 4K will effectively become the future
standard for moving images. The business case is
now imperative for 4K because if cinemas don't have
it then what they are offering will be at lower resolution
to what their customers will have at home.”
“ Working with
Sony we can set
trends for the
cinema of the
future”

Zurich Cinemas in Central New York State has
always been ahead of the curve with new technology
and has now converted the majority of its theatres to
digital with Sony Digital Cinema 4K.
The circuit has 11 locations, including eight first-run
theatres, one discount house and two twin drive-ins.
The eight first-run locations now feature 100 per cent
digital projection, including its nine-screen Pittsford
Theatre in Rochester and its eight-screen theatres in
Rome and Geneva. Out of a total of 70 screens across
all of the company's locations, 65 are now digital and
25 of these will feature RealD 3D. By the end of June,
the circuit's discount Hollywood Theatre in Mattydale is
also due to install a Sony 4K projector with RealD 3D.

Corporation Conrad Zurich and his wife Linda
established Zurich Cinemas in 1966. They have
incorporated new technologies over the years,
attempting to improve the on-screen presentation
and comfort in the auditorium and they are
convinced that converting to digital is giving
audiences a new, distinctive experience.
“The picture and sound quality that the customer
experiences with digital projection is superb,” says
Conrad Zurich, who can now guarantee no more
scratches and glitches in the quality of footage. “The
brightness and clarity of the image is
outstanding…Whether the customer is there for
opening night or six weeks into a film's engagement,
they can be sure they are getting a pristine image on
screen.”
The decision to go for Sony Digital Cinema 4K was
all about achieving the best experience possible,
having looked across the market at digital options. “4K
projection has four times the resolution of a 2K
projection system, 2K presentations are roughly
equivalent to a HDTV presentation a customer can get
at home,” says Zurich. “Simply stated, 4K gives the
consumer a superior picture to what they can get in
the home environment.” He explains that the decision
to go with Sony was also all about quality and
performance: “In our estimation, Sony has the top
product for the digital market – which is 4K digital
projection systems with 3D capabilities.”
Zurich Cinemas Director of Operations Jamison
Mills is convinced that 3D is here to stay. “I think that
3D could easily become the norm for movie
watching. The depth and beauty watching scenes in
3D on the big screen is breathtaking,” he says. “You
just become immersed in a 3D movie – it feels like
you're right there with the actors.”
Beyond the presentation of 4K and 3D features,
Zurich Cinemas has plans to show a range of
different content using the technology. “Outside of
the traditional Hollywood movies (both in 2D and 3D),
there are several alternative content areas currently
available and more to come featuring operas, ballets,
music concerts, and sporting events,” says Zurich.

Wimbledon tennis championships in 2011 provide
theatre owners throughout the world with a major
opportunity for showing alternative content to their
customers. The event is shot in 3D and distributed
via satellite to cinema screens. It allows theatres that
have invested in the Sony Digital Cinema 4K
projection system with the RealD 3D lens adaptors
to realise the benefits of all the Wimbledon drama at
the highest possible quality.
“"Most people cannot get a ticket to Wimbledon;
we are always sold out. So I think watching
Wimbledon in 3D in the cinema or at home is as near
as you can get to actually being here. That’s what
excites me about the technology and I think anything
that translates the excitement and delight of being
here when you’re in a cinema or at home that has to
be a really positive thing,” says Ian Ritchie, Chief
Executive of The All England Lawn Tennis Club.
“You may have seen 3D football and golf from
Sony before,” says Mark Grinyer, 3D/Sports
Solutions Business Head, Sony Professional. “Those
sports take place on big fields and in big panoramas
and they look marvellous in 3D. Tennis is different.
Tennis is small, it’s very compact, so our cameras
are going to get right in there into the play, you’re
going to see the sweat, going to feel the heat of
Centre Court. Wimbledon itself is a cauldron of
emotion during those final days and I think that
cauldron of emotion will translate through 3D right
through to the viewing public.”
Fujio Nishida, President of Sony Europe
comments, “We are delighted to be working with
The All England Lawn Tennis Club to bring such a
high profile sporting event to consumers around the
world in 3D. Watching tennis in High Definition 3D is
a stunning experience, bringing the speed of the
action and the emotions of the occasion to life; it is
as close to the atmosphere and excitement of
Centre Court as actually being there. With the Live
3D Wimbledon experience available in hundreds of
3D cinemas across the world, many more people will
be able to enjoy one of the world’s most iconic

Beach Movie Bistro in Virginia Beach opened in May
2011, complete with seven screens equipped with
Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection systems.
The theatre offers a gourmet-dining, movie-watching
experience and is the debut facility in Virginia for Beach
Movie Bistro Inc. It will be operated by Act V Theaters.
President of Act V, Robert Perkins, describes how
Beach Movie Bistro is the result of a total make-over of
an old theatre on the same site: “We took the building
down to its bare bones and started over – it was a great
opportunity to take a tired old facility and turn it into
something really wonderful. We’ve completely rebuilt
the auditoriums with all new seats, tables, lighting and
installed new screens with 4K digital projection to really
heighten the experience and make it state of the art.”
The decision to go with Sony 4K rather than 2K was
a combination of wanting a great experience for
audiences, but also future-proofing the theatre. “We
wanted to install 4K so that the we were one step
ahead,” says Perkins. “The industry is evolving and
equipment is changing so quickly… We think the Sony
system offers the best presentation and a really bright
picture.”
In its first two weeks the theatre showed two 3D
pictures and Perkins points to a raft of 3D releases
coming up in the near future. He’s also looking forward
to being able to show new sorts of programming,
taking the dine-while-you-watch experience into
different areas of entertainment, using digital
technology. “We think there’s a model in place for opera
and we want to show sporting events and other
worldwide events, such as the Oscars, where people
want to come to a social environment,” he says. “4K
makes all this more possible for us.”

Three of the top Official Selections
at Cannes was given their final
check at Le Club Lincoln in Paris
Immediately prior to being screened in front of the
Cannes jury, the digital cinema prints for three of the
top movies in the Official Selection up for the Palme
D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May were given
their final checks at Le Club Lincoln in Paris.
This 40-seat exclusive screening room, on rue
Lincoln, is one of the city’s most sought after
projection rooms, popular with actors, moviemakers and distributors who choose it to host cast
and crew screenings, VIP events, press previews
and DCP checks.
When Club Lincoln’s owner, producer and director
Philippe Godeau, decided to refresh the projection
system, he placed the decision at the hands of chief
projectionist, Daniel Dubuisson.
“I have been an admirer of the Sony 4K technology
for many years and I knew immediately this was the
right choice for us,” Dubuisson explains. “We were
the last professional cinema in Paris to be equipped
with digital so when the owner’s gave me the green
light to go ahead I said we have to go with Sony.

screens but I disagree. Our screen here is 5 x 2
metres but you can absolutely see the difference
when I project a 2K movie and then a 4K movie. If
the difference is on screen you absolutely have to
show it. 4K pictures projected by Sony’s technology
are like seeing an answer print in digital. The image
is sharp but not cold, you feel something special in
the image. In my opinion 4K is the future of cinema
and we can now marry the highest quality pictures
with the highest quality THX theatre sound system
so that aesthetically you cannot get any better.”
The venue is booked solid with screenings every
day of the week and there are plans down the line to
equip the room with a 3D option.

4K movies set to increase with new camera
F65 camera completes end-to-end 4K production line
Sony has unveiled a new top end professional
camera completing a production chain that allows
movie makers to shoot, post produce and distribute
in 4K quality. It further propels the 4K standard for
cinemas as 4K productions are likely to increase.
The new F65 camera sets a new benchmark with
extraordinary resolution, dynamic range, colour
reproduction and sensitivity. The camera’s unique
8K image sensor, with approximately 20
megapixels, offers higher image fidelity than any
other camera. With 16-bit RAW output, the F65
establishes the gateway to a complete, end-to-end
4K mastering workflow.
“The new 4K camera is the talk of Hollywood and
will help in the creation of more 4K movies as the
production workflow now makes it far easier,” says
Dianne LaGuardia, Sr. Manager, Marketing, Sony
Digital Cinema Solutions.
Director of photography Curtis Clark, ASC, says
the F65 will significantly enhance the creative
possibilities for movie makers. “Sony's new F65
digital motion picture camera combines true 4K
resolution with an expansive dynamic range that
enables a more nuanced reproduction of fine textural
and tonal details,” says Clark. “Along with excellent
contrast and exceptional colour reproduction, the
F65 produces images that have a rich filmic look and
feel, providing filmmakers with significantly enhanced
creative photographic possibilities.”
At the heart of the F65 camera is Sony’s newly
developed 8K sensor, which will deliver pristine HD,
2K, and true 4K resolution today – and will go far
beyond 4K in the future, as the industry needs
evolve. The imager provides a significant
improvement in image resolution that is ideal for
VFX processing. The camera has also been
designed for multiple production applications,
including 3D rigs and Steadicam.

4K RELEASES
Vintage Cinemas is launching the third theatre in its
Californian chain of retro movie theatres – the Village
Theatre on San Diego County’s Coronado Island. The
all-new renovation project will see the historic theatre
brought back to life, complete with Sony 4K and 3D
facilities, giving local residents state of the art digital
projection.
The project to restore the Village Theatre began ten
years ago. Originally a run-down single screen theatre,
in 2000 it closed and shortly afterwards Vintage
Cinemas and CEO Lance Alspaugh first talked to the
landlord about a rescue plan. With the generous
assistance from the City of Coronado Redevelopment
Agency, the theatre is now a state-of-the-art triplex,
with a main auditorium of 200 seats and two screening
rooms of 45 seats each. Vintage Cinemas contributed
all furniture, fixtures and equipment.
“We took the opportunity to explore digital cinema
possibilities for the new venue,” says Alspaugh. “After
reviewing the equipment, options and technology
currently available, we decided on Sony 4K digital
cinema. We were impressed by Sony’s image and
saturation at demonstrations and, being a hard line
purist, I wanted the images at the Village to match or
exceed the visual experience of film and Sony Digital
does just that.”
They chose to add 3D to the mix using RealD in the
main auditorium and one screening room. The plan for
the future is to expand the cinema’s menu by offering
