CONCURRENCE
Since this monograph is devoted to the study of the pituitary center,
you will find the following passage concerning the pituitary gland to be
of interest. After reading the excerpt, you will realize why this gland is
rightfully considered by most physicians to be the “master gland” of our
endocrine system.
The pituitary is a small neuroglandular body located at the base
of the skull and is composed of two parts. The first is the anterior lobe
or glandular division, which secretes hormones that act directly.
These include the somatotropic hormone, a hormone responsible
for physical development; and the thyrotropic hormone, a
hormone which acts on selected endocrine glands such as the
thyroid. The other division, the posterior lobe, is made up of
nerve cells connected with the brain, and especially to one of
its lobes—the hypothalamus. It can be likened to a reservoir
of neurohormones secreted by the hypothalamus.
It is remarkable that a gland the size of a small pea in the human
body, whose diameter is approximately 1½ centimeters (3/5 inch)
and which weighs less than one gram (3/10 ounce), orchestrates
the main regulatory systems of the body. No other gland secretes
such a large number of hormones. Moreover, it acts as the
crossroads of information relating to both the cerebrospinal
nervous system and the autonomic nervous system, which is
itself a regulatory system.

Dear Fratres and Sorores,
It is now time to continue our study of the major psychic centers.
Today we shall examine the pituitary center and explain how to proceed
in awakening its functions.
THE PITUITARY GLAND: Anatomically speaking, the pituitary
gland, also known as the hypophysis, is located approximately in the
middle of the head, at the level of the root of the nose. This pea-sized
gland is situated on the lower surface of the brain and in a bony
depression of the sphenoid bone called the sella turcica (Turkish saddle).
It weighs approximately ½ gram (1/50 ounce). The pituitary gland is
linked to the hypothalamus located in the lower part of the brain, between
the two cerebral hemispheres. As you learned in the Sixth Degree, the
hypothalamus has always been considered by Rosicrucians to be the
“brain” of the autonomic nervous system—that is, as being responsible
for all the involuntary functions of our being. In a broader sense, it
assumes control over our psychic body.
Without going into overly complex explanations, we do want to
point out that the pituitary gland is composed of two parts: the posterior
lobe and the anterior lobe. The first of these two lobes produces the
chemical substances which regulate the entire processes controlled by
the hypothalamus, especially the circulation of blood, the flow of nerve
energy, the rhythm of breathing, and the various phases of digestion. As
for the second lobe, it secretes hormones which increase or decrease the
activity of other endocrine glands, according to the circumstances and
needs of the body. This is precisely why the pituitary is considered by
researchers to be the “master gland” of our endocrine system.
In addition to the information just given to you concerning the
physiological role of the pituitary gland, it is also important to know that
this gland is controlled by the flow of the Vital Life Force manifesting
in our physical body. To be more specific, it ensures that the negative and
positive polarities of Vital Life Force are constantly in
balance in each of our organs. Moreover, when this balance is
disturbed, as a result of an illness or accident, it immediately

goes about reestablishing it, using the respective properties of the other
endocrine glands. That is why any deficiency in the pituitary gland results in
a gradual loss of vitality and increased difficulty in fighting pathogens.
THE PITUITARY CENTER: Since the pituitary center is the psychic
counterpart of the pituitary gland, its location is the same—that is, in the
middle of the head, at the root of the nose. One of its primary functions
is to transform our thoughts into emotions and vice versa. In other words,
it is responsible for the constant interaction between our mental and
emotional states. In this respect, you have surely noticed that whenever
you think of something, you also experience corresponding emotions.
Conversely, emotions give rise to thoughts of a similar nature. It is the
pituitary center which makes such a process possible. Let us add that
persons in whom this center is insufficiently developed tend to be too
intellectual or, on the contrary, too emotional.
The role of the pituitary center is not limited to the psychological
function just mentioned. Indeed, as explained in the Seventh Degree,
its action, in conjunction with that of the pineal center, gives rise to
psychic visions—that is, the perception of phenomena transcending
physical vision, such as auras, and the projection of the psychic body
or the soul during transition. We should also mention at this stage of
your Rosicrucian studies that the pituitary center’s main role concerns
clairaudience, for it allows us to perceive psychically those sounds,
music, voices, and messages originating in the invisible world. In other
words, it is the seat of psychic hearing. Consequently, you will agree that
there are many reasons for awakening this center.
As you learned in the Seventh Temple Degree, the pituitary center
is stimulated by the vowel sounds RA and MA (pronounced “a” as in
“father”), which are intoned on A natural above middle C. We suggest
that you use the sound RA, as it is more effective. Furthermore, this
center is very sensitive to the vibrations of the color indigo. On the next
page is the exercise which we suggest you perform for stimulating its
psychic functions.

EXPERIMENT: Sit with your back as straight as possible and your feet
flat on the floor, slightly apart.
Place the joined tips of the thumb, index finger, and middle finger of
your dominant hand at the root of the nose, between the two eyebrows,
at the level of the pituitary gland. If you find the position of these fingers
too tiring, simply place your hands on your lap throughout the exercise.
Then close your eyes, take a deep breath through the nose, and hold
the air in your lungs for a few moments.
While slowly exhaling, intone the vowel sound RA and visualize
your pituitary center as a small indigo sphere approximately 7 millimeters
(2/5 inch) in diameter.
Repeat this process six times for a total of seven intonations. Then remain
seated in silence and be attentive to any impressions you may receive.
Immediately after performing this exercise, you will probably
experience a sensation of heat, coolness, or tingling in the area of the
pituitary gland or throughout your head. You may also sense that you are
hearing unusual sounds emanating from your surroundings or from the
invisible world. If this is the case, do not be alarmed, for these sounds
simply result from the stimulation of your pituitary center. Also keep in
mind that they can only be pleasant and inspiring, as they reflect what is
sometimes called in mysticism the “Music of the Spheres.”
With best wishes for Peace Profound,
Sincerely and fraternally,
YOUR CLASS MASTER

Summary of This Monograph
After carefully reading this monograph, read the following summary. It contains
the major principles on which you are to reflect and meditate in the coming days.
If any of the points are difficult to understand, refer to the explanations given in this
monograph. Moreover, we advise you to read this summary again immediately before
your next sanctum period.
