Objective: Students will understand the methods writers use to reveal a character.
Lesson: Students will read, Mrs. Flowers by Maya Angelou. This story motivates students to
think about someone who has influenced their lives. Students will read about Maya Angelou’s background
and listen to her poem she read at President Clinton’s inauguration. While reading students will complete a
character analysis chart on Marguerite and will be assessed on their comprehension of the story. Students
will complete comprehension questions 2, 3, and 5 on page 191. Students will be assessed on their
comprehension and vocabulary from Mrs. Flowers.

Core Curriculum# E08.C.1.2 write to convey ideas about a relevant topic
Objective: Students will write a letter.
Lesson: Students will learn the six parts of a letter. Students will play the voice of Marguerite’s
grandmother and will write a letter to Mrs. Flowers. The letter will dictate the appreciation you feel for
Mrs. Flower’s influence in your granddaughter’s life.

Objective: Students will analyze historical fiction, evaluate historical accuracy and compare and
contrast texts.
Lesson: Students will read a number of factual sources about the Battle of Shiloh, an important
Civil War Battle. Students will read a chapter from a nonfiction piece of literature entitled, Drumbeats and
Bullets. Students will read a short story by Ray Bradbury entitled, Drummer Boy of Shiloh. Students will
use a reader’s guide in order to reflect and compare literature.
