CDHS was recently contacted by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the
government entity responsible for monitoring
licensed dog breeding establishments. One
such establishment, what we call a puppy
mill, in the area around Bottineau, was
inspected by the USDA and it was found
that there was “inadequate ventilation in the
whelping building,” which contained 40-plus
nursing mothers with litters attached.
The USDA asked if CDHS could take
in some of the animals immediately, as
the owner of the mill had relinquished her
license. CDHS was not able to make the
trip on that day, so Prairie Paws Rescue of
Jamestown jumped in and made the trip to
rescue 18 of the unwanted breeding stock
dogs. CDHS then drove to Jamestown the
next day and picked up 10 of the dogs.
The owner of the facility, who had
relinquished her license, now is no longer
able to sell puppies to pet stores, but can
still sell them by newspaper ad or over the
Internet. This is one example of the sad
reality behind puppy mills. And it is the
reason that it is imperative that no one buy
puppies from a pet store, or through an
Internet listing that appears suspicious.
True breeders, those who raise animals
for the love of the breed, should be
completely transparent when asked about
their animals and the areas they are raised in.
They allow you to visit their establishments.
Puppy mill vendors hide behind pet stores or
Internet listings, as their animals are raised in
deplorable and inhumane conditions.

Running for the pets
By Erica Veil
Back in February, my sister, Ramona and I
decided to start training for the Fargo marathon. As
training started getting grueling, we decided that if
we were going to run that far, we better do it for a
cause. We didn’t even think twice about choosing
CDHS.
If you know our family at all, you know that we
are all huge animal lovers, and love spending time
at the shelter. Ramona and I both have cats which
we adopted from shelters (Winston and Kitty) and Erica and Ramona, before the race, pose with
their rescued cats.
Ramona has a dog (Tonka) which came from the
shelter also. Knowing that we were doing this for a
cause really helped on those training days that seemed too farfetched.
The day finally came for the race – it started out in a downpour. We pulled out the very flattering black garbage bags, threw them over us to try and stay dry, and headed out to the start line. It
rained for the first 45 minutes and then turned out to be the perfect day for the race. While running
we counted over 100 dogs, one cat, and countless pigeons along the course. Also while running the
course, we had a few other runners comment on the shirts we were wearing with the CDHS logo,
and told us how happy they were with animals they’ve adopted from shelters.
Those last few miles proved to be trying, but just the thought of the animals kept us going. We
didn’t intend to set any records, and we didn’t, finishing in just over six hours, but it was a great
experience and felt great to give back to something we love. All and all we ran over 350 miles in
training, 26.2 miles in the race, and had an awesome experience.
Editor’s note: Erica and Ramona’s mom is shelter employee, Nancy Fehr. The pair raised over
$600 for the animals at CDHS.

A parade of pups
Continuing to fight
By Sue Buchholz, Shelter Director
Thanks to CDHS volunteers who helped
to walk dogs in both the Band Night Parade
in May and the Mandan 4th of July Parade.
Most of the CDHS dogs got to the Band Night
Parade and enjoyed the nice spring weather.
Since the 4th of July was so hot, we brought
along only two dogs who walked for a bit,
but spent most of their time riding in the
air conditioning while the people walked,
carrying signs with pictures of our puppy
mill rescues and some of the shelter pets
available for adoption. We love the parades
and all the cheers from the spectators.
Hurray for CDHS!

The rewards and challenges faced daily at CDHS are not for the
faint at heart. I am often asked if I watch certain shows on Animal
Planet, and while I admit I sometimes find myself drawn to that channel, more often than not I have to pass on by because it is too similar
to what I have spent the entire day dealing with. To this day I hear
people say, “We don’t have puppy mills in North Dakota, do we?”
Yes, we have puppy mills in North Dakota. I cannot tell you an
actual number, but in my world one is too many. I know of multiple
facilities in our state that have hundreds of dogs on site. Some
breeders are licensed by the USDA, and some are not as a license is
not a requirement to raise and sell dogs.
We have welcomed some of these mill dogs into our shelter and many of them have issues that
no creature should ever have to endure. The worst cases can hardly walk because of the matted fur
and clumps of feces dragging from them. They suffer from eye injuries, foot problems from standing and sleeping in inches of waste, skin infections, teeth that are rotting. You get the picture. Then
there is the emotional damage – lack of socialization, lack of a kind word or clean nutritious food.
Some require months to gain an ounce of trust and who can blame them? Yet many adapt quickly to
kindness and clean surroundings. It never ceases to amaze me. So many of these dogs have been
adopted into homes and are now valued, treasured family members they deserve to be. A thousandfold improvement over living the puppy-factory life they endured. Therein lies a huge payoff for all
our efforts!
I also want to address the frustration I sometimes hear when our facility is filled to capacity and
we have to turn away a request to help an animal. On more than one occasion I have heard from
individuals, “We support you, but now you are unable help us.”
This is a troubling reality that can and does happen. Requests for our services never seem to
reach a manageable number. Yes, we have had to turn down animals from supporters in the past.
Turning away any animal is extremely difficult and always heartbreaking. Yet we must limit the number in our care to what the facility and staff can currently handle and care for. To stack cages of cats
four deep is no better than a poor breeding facility. To pack a dozen dogs together in a small pen is
unhealthy and unacceptable.
The actual number of dogs and cats waiting to get into our shelter reaches into the hundreds.
Strays and injured animals are always a priority. No animal control services are provided by the surrounding counties, so who do people call? CDHS. Understandably so, but when we are already housing and caring for approximately 125 animals, with several hundred more in need listed to come in,
we simply cannot make that work out to everyone’s satisfaction.
I share that frustration and it haunts me daily. So I write this to give you some insight and to
thank you for helping us continue this fight. There are many areas demanding our attention – spay/
neuter education, stronger laws regarding humane living conditions for companion animals, a much
needed larger facility to house more animals in urgent need, establishing some animal control in the
counties so those residents have more options for helping strays. Many volunteers, board members
and staff are working to address all this and more.
Your continued support is vital to accomplish these lofty goals. We do see positive changes. We
can’t and won’t stop now!

Hurray for volunteers
By Cameo Skager,
CDHS Board President
What a busy summer! CDHS volunteers
and staff have been going nonstop all
summer, greeting the public, working on
fundraisers and beginning to raise money for
our potential building campaign. The events
we’ve been involved with since the beginning
of May include the Rub-A-Dub Doggie Wash,
MotoFest with KTM Cycle Hutt, Band Night
Parade, pets at the Boy Scout Jamboree,
Dog Days Deals Rummage Sale, Ressler
Subaru Pet-A-Palooza, McQuade’s Softball
Tournament cleanup, event at The Pier, Flip
for Paws fundraiser with KTM Cycle Hutt
and Mandan’s 4th of July Parade. And on
top of all of those events, we’ve been selling
raffle tickets, creating a Facebook page,
producing Destination Pets shows, putting out
newsletters, creating and editing web pages,
taking photos of animals – and of course, the
very important everyday work of caring for
the animals at the shelter and rescuing new
ones.
I do know
there are a
few people
who have been
involved with
nearly every
event and
fundraiser.
They must
certainly be
tired and yet
they continue to do more. It’s amazing to me
that we have so many volunteers willing to
do so much. And even as they go about their
own lives – working at their paying jobs and
managing their own homes and families – they
never forget about their CDHS family. They
continue to offer assistance and jump in when
needed.
We really do have the best volunteers
around! Hats off to all our volunteers. Your
dedication and diligence is what makes CDHS
continue to be successful at saving animals
and placing them in new, loving homes.
Rub-A-Dub fun
Thanks to all the CDHS volunteers who took on the furry and the dirty – and transformed
them into the fluffy and the shiny. The Rub-A-Dub Doggie Wash once again cleaned up – helping
local dogs spruce up, and helping the shelter animals by bringing in some great donations.
Thanks to Groomingdales for hosting this sudsy event.

We just wanted to give you an update on how Henry is doing. So
far things are great, he is quickly becoming one of the family. Things
were a little hectic at first, but It didn’t take too long for our other dog

Now everybody gets along great and Henry is adjusting very well!
Thanks so much for blessing our family with another lovable dog!

The Dutchess is home
Hello everyone,
We wanted to give you an update on Meera. She is
wonderful! She received a new name since she’s been in
our home, and it suits her perfectly! My granddaughter
(Paris) insisted on calling her Dutchess. She has quite the
personality, she is very talkative. We have discovered her
favorite toy - a laser light. It gives her a workout. She loves
to cuddle and often crawls under the covers! Dutchess
loves to hide from Paris and then jump out at her - and
the chase is on. They have great fun together. Oh, and she
likes to drop her little mouse toy into her water bowl and
then bring it to me while I’m sleeping! I didn’t know what
the heck was sitting on my pillow, but found a wet mouse
toy. I threw it off my pillow and she brought it back…That’s
how she initiates playing fetch. Dutchess has made herself at home here. We are glad to have her!
Thanks for all you do for homeless pets!!

Hello to all you wonderful people at CDHS!
I just wanted to send you a quick note to give you an update on the
puppy I adopted a few months ago – Ben (now named Cooper). Cooper
is doing great! He is the perfect addition to our family! He’s such an intelligent, fun little guy with tons of personality – there’s not a day that
goes by that he doesn’t do something to make me laugh – he’s such a
character! The shy, timid, sometimes difficult to catch puppy I first met
at CDHS has really come out of his shell. He has not been afraid of
us since we brought him home. We’ve been trying to introduce him to
strangers to help continue to get him over his fear of people.

Willy is doing wonderful and he and Winstin are getting along great!
He is a different dog.....we take him for walks every day and never
have one bit of problems with him walking. He is not scared, doesn’t

it! He lays on his back and lets us rub him down and is absolutely
spoiled! We woke up in our king-sized bed to two weiner dogs between

Ta-da – It’s Tada
By Sue Buchholz
Tada came to us as an injured stray that
was found at the cemetery by St. Anthony.
She did not have the use of her hind legs.
X-rays showed that she did not have any
broken bones, but obviously had nerve
damage from some unknown injury.
We were told that nerves regenerate very
slowly, and since Tada had some movement
and feeling in her legs, we were hopeful she
might recover the use of her legs. She did not
have the strength to stand for very long so
we helped her walk with a sling and began
doing stretching exercises with her, using an
exercise ball. Unfortunately, we did not see
the full recovery we had hoped for.
The staff discussed all the options and we
decided that if we had a successful rummage
sale, our reward would be a cart for Tada to
help her mobility. You must have guessed that
we had a great rummage sale, and now Tada
has a wheeled cart that she scoots around in.
Tada is such an easy going, determined
spirit that, as expected, she took to the
cart almost immediately. She is a happy,
affectionate kitty who loves life and is
Central Dakota Humane Society
very social. It’s a joy to see her wheel
around, use a scratching post, and “run”
instead of dragging herself (which she
also is quite happy to do). Tada is an
inspiration – a resident at the shelter
that we could all take a lesson from.
