Metric Units of Capacity
Unit 6, Session 1.5
Vocabulary
capacity
milliliter
liter
Squeeze 4 or 5 drops of water from an eyedropper.
Four or 5 drops of water gives you about
1 milliliter of water. Your teaspoon holds about
5 milliliters of water. How can you measure
100 milliliters of water into your jar?
Materials
Students might say:
• teaspoons
• small plastic jars that hold at
least 100 milliliters
• markers
• 1-liter plastic water bottles
• water
• eyedropper

GROUPS
“Count spoonfuls by 5 until we get to 100.”
“There are twenty 5s in 100, so measure out
20 spoonfuls.”
Measure and pour 100 milliliters of water into your jar. With your marker, mark
the level for 100 milliliters. A liter is 1,000 milliliters. How many times would
you need to pour 100 milliliters into your bottle to make 1,000 milliliters?
Have students continue to pour water into the bottle, measuring and marking off
100 milliliters at a time. Label your first mark “100 milliliters” and your tenth mark
“1 liter.” A liter is a little more than a quart. Four liters are a little more than a gallon.
Ask questions such as these to help students establish appropriate measures of capacity:
What unit would you use to measure a dose of liquid medicine? What would you
use to measure water for an aquarium?
Would you say that a bathroom sink holds 4 liters of water or 4 buckets of water?
How do you know?

25 MIN
Give each group a teaspoon, a small jar, a marker,
a liter bottle, and water. Today we are going to learn
about capacity. Capacity tells how much a
container can hold.

Students might say:
“It should hold about 4 liters; 4 buckets would make the sink
overflow.”

Have students describe other situations where they have experienced these units
of capacity.
PR AC TICE
In the Activity 38 Master, students choose appropriate metric units and measures
of capacity.
DIFFERENTIATION : Suppor ting the Range of Learner s
Give each group a variety of containers. Have them first estimate and
then use their measuring containers to find each capacity to the nearest 100 milliliters
and to the nearest liter.
