1
Alliteration
This is a device rather than a figure of speech. It is frequently used in poetry and in
newspaper headlines. It is where the consonant is repeated often at the beginning of words.
For example:
“Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper.” or “Many mothers make mince.”
It does not always have to be the same letter – it is the same sound. For example:
“Kyle couldn’t kick the creature from the curve of the cucumber.”
Fill in the spaces below. Remember, alliteration means the words usually begin with the
same letter.
1
Deranged dogs

3

Onomatopoeia
This refers to words whose sound suggest their meaning. For example: Quack, hiss, buzz.
Look at the poem below and underline any instances of onomatopoeia.
Hear the sledges with the bells-Silver bells!
What a world of merriment their melody foretells!
How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle,
In the icy air of night!
While the stars that oversprinkle
All the heavens, seem to twinkle
With a crystalline delight;
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells
From the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells-From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells.
Look at the sentences and match them up to the appropriate word.
A plate being dropped on the floor.

Quotation Marks or Inverted Commas– Direct Speech
“ ”
Inverted commas, also called quotation marks, may be “Double” or ‘Single’. They are used
to enclose direct speech – the reporting of the exact words said by someone. For example:
My mum said to me, “Are you ready to leave the house now?”
Notice that there is a comma before the quotation starts and there is a capital letter at the
beginning of the quotation. If the quotation is interrupted by other writing, a comma can
replace a full stop at the end of the quotation.
Re-write the following sentences, adding quotation marks and other punctuation as
necessary; be careful with capital letters too.
1
what are baby horses called asked sally
