It’s hard to believe that almost a full year
has passed since I wrote my first column as
President. Thanks to you, our committed
congregants, our dedicated Officers, Board,
Affiliates and hardworking clergy and staff, it
has been a full and productive year. We
completed our Next Dor focus groups and
have begun incorporating your input into our
planning for the coming year. We welcomed
our new members, revived our 2nd Night Seder, came together
for educational and cultural programs, listened to wonderful
music, helped to grow Diane’s Farm, thanked Nancy Simon
and welcomed Shara Siegfeld as our new Director of the
Einhorn Center for Jewish Education. We made significant
progress in growing our endowment. We have celebrated the
holidays, rejoiced at baby namings, B’nai Mitzvah and
weddings. We have prayed for healing and mourned the loss of
our loved ones. Together, we have strengthened our congregational community.
And we’re not done yet! June offers additional opportunities for connection. Volunteering at the Garage Sale on June
9th is a great way to meet new people while providing an
important service to the larger community and helping to raise
needed funds for CBE. The 175th Anniversary Dinner Gala and
Show on June 15th, on which so many have worked long and
hard, will be a wonderful culmination of the meaningful and fun
celebrations our committees, affiliates, clergy and staff created
for us. And last but not least, our June 19th
Annual
Congregational Meeting will give us the opportunity to gather in
community to conduct important business and honor deserving
members. I hope to see many of you at these events.
As this edition of the bulletin covers three months, please
read it carefully and mark your calendars with the great things
that are planned. I wish you all a happy and healthy summer!
B’Shalom,

The Howard & Doris Rome Garden –
An Endowed Gift
Please join us for services on Friday, June 14th at
5:30 p.m., after which we will go outside to
dedicate the Howard & Doris Rome Garden. Congregation
Beth Emeth is most grateful to their children for creating and
endowing this lasting tribute to the Temple and to the
community that Howard and Doris so loved.
Howard William Rome was a graduate of Lasalle Institute and Norwich University. He also received his Masters
of Public Administration from SUNY Albany. He dedicated
his life to the family store, Spector’s, which Doris’s father
had founded, and which is still open today. He was a loving
father and always had a smile on his face. He encouraged
his children to be independent thinkers with his thoughtful
words of encouragement and able advice. His passion was
gardening and flowers. The home was surrounded by them,
and a holiday never passed without him sending flowers to
all of “his girls”.
Dr. Doris Spector Rome graduated from Milne High
school, Skidmore College and Albany Medical College. After
having studied with Dr. Papanicolaou, who developed the
PAP smear as it is known today, she opened the Cytology
Laboratory at the Albany Medical Center. She later went on
to pursue a residency in Pathology and became Board certified in both fields. She eventually opened her own laboratory
known as Cytopath. Doris and Howard worked together as
always on this project. During the course of her career she
received many awards and citations, published several papers and was presented with an honorary degree from her
Alma Mater, Skidmore College. She was a pioneer in Medicine, enjoyed skiing and excelled at golf. Being a woman
did not deter her from accomplishing anything to which she
set her mind. Their children, Marcia Rome Levitz, Lisa S.
Rome M.D., and Michael Spector Rome and grandchildren,
Aaron Moskowitz, Lauren Rome and David Rome, hope this
garden will be a peaceful setting for reflection and contemplation and a testament to their parents and grandparents
who enriched their lives as well as many other lives through
the way they conducted theirs.
All are invited to an Oneg Shabbat, sponsored by the
Romes, following services.

It is impossible to believe that I am concluding my first year
as Chair of the Social Action Committee. It has been an exciting and inspiring experience so far. I am incredibly grateful to
the members of the committee who do so much to meet our
commandment to Tikkun Olam. Thanks also to every soup
kitchen volunteer, crew chief, mitzah squad participant, Diane’s
Garden volunteers, and any of you who have assisted in the
work of the committee.
At the Social Action Shabbat in April, I made the comment,
that because of the commitment of Reform Judaism to Social
Justice and Repairing the World that everyone in the congregation is a member, some are just inactive. I would love for you to
join the roster of active members and participants.
Ways to become active are to write letters to the editor of
area newspapers. Communicating in person, by phone, by
e-mail or snail mail with your area legislators, or other government leaders. Become a soup kitchen volunteer and become a
crew chief. You may join our Mitzvah Squad. Diane’s Farm is
always looking for volunteers.
I urge you to visit our web site www.bethemethalbany.org,
especially since this is the last bulletin for several months. Also
become a facebook friend of the congregation.
I want to close by giving a huge thanks to the Board of
Trustees, the Clergy and the lay staff of the congregation for all
of the wonderful help and support throughout the year.
Have a great summer season,
Barry Z.. Davis

Thank you to everyone who attended the Josh Nelson Concert on Sunday, May 5th. The sanctuary was filled with spirit,
fun and music as we gathered to recognize our children and to
continue celebrating Beth Emeth’s 175th anniversary.
Donor Dinner was a huge success, thanks to the hard work
of fabulous committee members: Lisa Finkle, Marcia Horelick,
Julie Koenig, Nancy Lozman, Sue Melnikoff, Beth Monaco,
Joan Paley, Ellen Roehr and Lynn Warheit. The entertainment
for the evening included Rabbi Kenneth Kantor presenting a
heart warming musical program. Thank you to Rabbi Shpeen
for sponsoring Rabbi Kantor through the Rabbi Scott L. Shpeen
Distinguished Artist Fund in memory of Susan. Many thanks to
Robin Sobol for creating a beautiful tribute to WRJ's centennial
celebration. The sentiments shared by past presidents captured
the past 100 years of WRJ and of our very own Beth Emeth
Sisterhood.
Margie Dorkin, outgoing Sisterhood President, was honored during the dinner. Margie led Sisterhood into a new generation of programs, while maintaining the traditions that were
passed down to her from her predecessors. It was through
Margie’s leadership, guidance, passion and vision that the delicate balance of the past, present and future have been realized.
A hearty yashar koach to Margie!
Sisterhood is proud to sponsor its annual summer trip to
Glimmerglass and monthly Mah Jongg tournaments. Looking
ahead to the fall, Sisterhood is pleased to continue to sponsor
Mah Jongg lessons will resume in the fall along with Knit and

Our annual Giant Garage Sale will be held June 8-11. The
Garage Sale is a fundraiser which helps Beth Emeth provide a
broad spectrum of programs and activities for its members,
while at the same time providing a service to the larger community by offering quality merchandise at a very reasonable price.
Many of our returning customers consider our sale to be the
“BEST IN THE CAPITAL REGION”.
The Garage Sale is part of Beth Emeth’s Social Action
programming. At the conclusion of the sale, unsold merchandise will be donated to community based non-profit agencies to
assist them in serving their clients. Our goal is to sell or donate
everything and to throw away nothing.
Thanks in advance to our CBEYG volunteers who assist
with a variety of duties. Thank you to the wonderful Garage
Sale Committee—co-chairs Margie and Rob Dorkin, Janis
Campo, Janis Englestein, David Galletly, Karen Gerstenzang,
Wendy Keyser, Julie Levin, Jill Peterson, Arleen Stein, Gary
Weitzman, and Barbara Zaron - and to all the volunteers.
Thanks to Joan Paley, Gail Kendall, and Steve Squires for the
many things they do to make the weekend run smoothly. We
couldn’t do it without you all!!

A message from our Programming Director
As everyone else is starting up their lawn mowers, getting
out their sandals and anticipating those wonderful, fun days at
a pool, lake, ocean . .. I’m actually getting ready for the High
Holy Days (Wow – that was a quick summer!!!!) For me getting
ready involves getting curriculum/supplies/registration forms all
set for our High Holy Day Children’s programming, as well as
cleaning up The Parenting Center and putting it to “sleep” for
the summer.
Another way that helps me get ready for the High Holy
Days is a daily e-mail that I sign up for – “Jewels of Elul.” For
everyday of the month of Elul (beginning August 7), you get an
e-mail with a thought written by a variety of people (actors,
theologians, poets, authors, etc) – to help prepare and enhance your High Holy Day experience. To sign up, go to
www.craignco.com/jewelsflash.php. Hope you enjoy them as
much as I do.
I’ll be keeping everyone posted through my weekly e-mails
of upcoming programs for the Fall at Beth Emeth as well as
posting everything on our web-site. Check out the fun activities
being planned this summer at Beth Emeth from our 175th Anniversary Show to a Day at the Races – there’s something for all
this summer at Beth Emeth!
Wishing everyone a WONDERFUL summer!!
B’ Shalom

Thanks to all who volunteered at the April 21st Beth
Emeth - JCC Health & Services Fair. With your help, all ran
smoothly, hundreds of people received free health information,
and Beth Emeth and the JCC had a successful fund-raiser.
With gratitude and appreciation,
Claire Sigal & Sally Greenblatt, Fair Coordinators
The Clergy of Beth Emeth take great pride in making
themselves available to the members of our congregation at
the time of their pastoral needs.
However, in recent years the realities of hospital visitations
have changed dramatically. First, because of the HIPPA Laws,
the Temple is only notified of the hospitalization of a member IF
the hospital is specifically instructed to do so OR if a family
member chooses to inform us. Secondly, the typical length of a
hospital stay has decreased significantly and many procedures
require a minimal stay if any.
In addition, we understand and fully respect the privacy of
our members in that many individuals do not want or require a
pastoral visit while hospitalized and, in fact, an unscheduled
visit might well interrupt their recuperation, rehabilitation schedule or testing procedure.
In light of this, please be reminded that if you are hospitalized and would, indeed, welcome the visit of a member of our
Clergy or are in need of pastoral attention, PLEASE either have
the hospital chaplain or nurse be in touch with us (as they can
easily do) OR have a relative or friend let us know. The Clergy
are not routinely in the hospitals and ONLY make calls upon
request because of the aforementioned reasons and out of
respect for your privacy.

The Next Dor focus groups demonstrated how important
our Religious School is to our congregants. The purpose of the
Education Committee is to provide oversight to the Religious
School. We further this purpose by participating in developing
the policies of the school, organizing programming for the
Religious School community and the greater Congregation, and
raising funds to support the Religious School.
I am happy to report that the Education Committee accomplished all of these goals this year. The Committee offered
advice to Nancy Simon, our interim Religious School Director,
as she skillfully shepherded our school during the transition
after Wendy Barnet retired and before Shara Siegfeld was
hired as our new Education Director. We are very grateful for
Nancy’s efforts. We planned the annual Opening Day Picnic
which was enjoyed by our Religious School students and families. And, through the success of our Holiday Craft Fair last
November and the Moveable Feast last month, we raised over
$8000.
We are looking for new members and would be thrilled to
have you join us. We are also looking for individuals who
simply want to help plan an event or work on a particular
program. If you are someone who wants to become more
involved in the religious school and Beth Emeth community,
please contact me at 439-6959 or [email protected]. I look
forward to hearing from you.
