NAMIBIA IN BRIEF
LOCATION
Situated on the south-western coast of Africa, Namibia borders Angola and Zambia in the
north, Botswana in the east and South Africa in the south with a land surface area of 824 292
km2.

POPULATION
Namibia is sparsely populated with a total population of 2.3 million people based on the 2011
Population and Housing Census.
LANGUAGE
Namibia is multi-cultural country with 16 languages and dialects spoken across the country.
English as the official language, though Afrikaans (a descendant of Dutch) is commonly spoke
in major towns.
SEASONS
Summer: September to April - High temperatures with averages of above 30oC with some
rains.
Winter: May to August – Characterised by cold and dry days with very cold nights.
TIME ZONES:
Summer time: GMT + 2 hours from the 1st Sunday in September to the 1st Sunday in April.
Winter time: GMT + 1 hour from the 1st Sunday in April to the 1st Sunday in September.
CURRENCY
The national currency is the Namibia Dollar (N$): The Namibia Dollar and South African Rand
are the only legal tender in Namibia and can be used freely to purchase goods and services. the
Namibian dollar is pegged at one to one with the South African Rand.
Notes are N$200, N$100, N$50, N$20 and N$20. Coins are N$5, N$1, 50 cents, 10 cents, and
5 cents. One dollar (N$1.00) is worth 100 cents.

Foreign currencies such as the US dollar, Euros and British Pound are the most easily
convertible.
Travellers’cheques as well as most international credit and debits cards (Master Card, American
Express, Diners, Visa and Maestro) are also accepted and most establishments have Point of
Sale (POS) facilities for convenience. Kindly consult your bank on applicable bank charges.
SHOPPING
The namibia hosts a wide range of world class shopping malls e.g. The Grove Mall, Wernhill
Park, Maerua Mall in Windhoek, Platz Am Meer, Peters’Antiques, Ocean View Shopping
Centre and many more in Swakopmund.
AIR TRAVEL
There are two International Airports: Hosea Kutako International Airport situated about 50 km
east of the Capital City Windhoek and the Walvis Bay International Airport located about 50
km of Swakopmund.
Both AirNamibia and South African Airways operate scheduled daily flights between
Windhoek and Johannesburg (South Africa), Windhoek and Cape Town (South Africa),
Johannesburg or Cape Town (South Africa) and Walvis Bay.
AirNamibia also operates direct flights between Windhoek-Maun (Botswana) WindhoekHarare (Zimbabwe), Windhoek-Luanda (Angola) Windhoek-Frankfurt.
In adition to AirNamibia and South Africa Airways there are other airlines operating flights to
Windhoek and these includes British Airways, KLM , Lufthansa, Condor ,Qatar Airways and
Ethiopian Airways.
Arriving in Swakopmund by air can be done via Walvis Bay International Airport. Ask your
travel agent for more information and advice on available flights.
In addition to international routes, AirNamibia operates daily domestic flights to various
destinantions.
MAJOR TOURISM AREAS
Namibia boosts a wide range of tourism attractions. Wildlife including the big fives, breath
taking and beautiful landscapes. The country draws its name from the oldest desert in the world
the Namib Desert, Fish River Canyon the largest canyon in Africa, Namib Naukluft Park the
biggest game park in Africa and the fourth largest national park in the world, Sossusvlei to
mention just a few.
