Frolio Middle School
Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year at Frolio!
Setting Goals in September
It’s hard to believe that the
new school year is just
about upon us. Our doors
will open to students and
the first day of school will
begin at 7:10 am on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. I
am excited to begin this
year as Principal of the
Frolio Middle School and
thankful for the opportunities that lie ahead for our
students.
Middle school students
require a great deal of
guidance and support from
all of the adults in their lives
during this phase of their
development. There are
many ways that we can
partner together in order to
help your child be successful
throughout this school year.
how the goal may be
broken down into sequential steps, e.g. read one
chapter of the book each
night in order to keep up
with the assignment.
We urge you to join us in
supporting your child in
their academic and behavioral goals and begin each
week by helping your child
set one goal at home. It
might be to complete all
homework on time or completing a particular longterm assignment.
Check in with your child
daily on progress made
toward achievement of the
goal. If (and when) challenges arise, talk about
them openly and discuss
potential solutions.
Fri, Sept 2 & Mon, Sept 5
No School
At the end of the week,
evaluate the goal with
your child. Did he/she
achieve the goal? Why?
What worked or what
didn’t work? Importantly,
praise your child for doing
his/her best. Then set next
week’s goal!

Gr 7 Student Drop In and Locker Practice - Wed, August 24th
On Wednesday, August 24th incoming grade 7 students are welcome to drop in to Frolio and try their hand
(repeatedly) at opening the locker they have been assigned for the school year. This event both gives your
child the opportunity to feel comfortable within the school building and it gives the student an opportunity to
acclimate to opening his/her locker without the pressure of the first day of school. Faculty members will be
available to assist students and their parents/guardians with questions. Parents are welcome! We ask that students arrive during their designated time below based on the first letter of their last name:
8:00am arrival: Last names beginning with A-M.
9:00am arrival: Last names beginning with N-Z.
School Supplies
Every August as students anticipate the opening of school, they often like to purchase school supplies. To help
them and you in this endeavor we would like to make some suggestions. The following are some generic items that
may be used for all classes and you may buy them before the start of school to help your child throughout the
year: Blue, Black, and Red Pens

Summer Reading Program - Incoming 8th Graders
Incoming 8th graders are expected to engage in summer reading and be prepared to complete a Book Share on the first day of school. Eighth grade students will be expected to
share with their classmates a brief summary and impression of the book(s) they read over
the summer. It is recommended that you select your summer reading from Abington Public
Library’s Get In The Game~Read 2016 Collaborative Summer Reading Program. Visit and
sign up for the program online at http://www.abingtonpl.org/index.php/teens/summerreading-for-teens or visit the Abington Public Library.

Frolio’s Summer Reading Program
Incoming 7th Graders
Incoming 7th graders are expected to maintain a calendar for each summer week reflecting evidence that they read a minimum of 90 minutes each week. Parents/guardians are asked to sign off on the calendar each week. The calendar will be submitted to your homeroom teacher on the first day of school as your raffle ticket to enter a chance to win a free Nook through
our Read to Succeed Program. During the first three days of school, all 7th graders will also complete a Book Share Form
given to them by their teachers, and they will share a brief summary and impression of the book(s) they read over the summer. It is recommended that you select your summer reading from Abington Public Library’s Get In The Game~Read 2016
Collaborative Summer Reading Program. Visit the program and sign up online at http://www.abingtonpl.org/index.php/
teens/summer-reading-for-teens or visit the Abington Public Library. Frolio Middle School, in partnership with the Horace
Mann Companies, is proud to introduce the “Read to Succeed” program for our students. It’s simple, and parents, we need
you, too!
Each child needs to read an extra 90 minutes per week during the summer vacation. We are attaching a task sheet for parents to sign verifying their child has read the required 90 minutes per week for the 8 weeks of the program. Forms must be
turned in on the first day of school - August 30th - for your child to earn a raffle ticket for the Nook drawing.
The winners will be announced by September 3rd. More details to follow prior to the awards ceremony.
The Read to Succeed Program is sponsored by Dewayne Harrell of The Horace Mann Companies. (This is not an endorsement by the Frolio Middle School.)

We are making the effort to “go green” and use less paper. As a result, our school
handbook is online as well as other documents. A parent/guardian and student sigFacebook.com/froliomiddleschool
nature form will go home with all students indicating that you have reviewed the
handbook with your child. There will be a box on this form that may be checked if
you require a hard copy of the Student Handbook.
We will regularly send out emails via Constant Contact, our general email notifica@FrolioMiddle
tion system. We ask that you sign up for Constant Contact at your earliest convenience in order to be informed of our school activities, special events and other news
notifications.

School-wide Positive Behavior
Supports and Intervention Program
Consistent - Predictable - Positive - Safe
What is a School-Wide PBIS? According to PBIS.org, “Improving student academic and
behavior outcomes is about ensuring all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioral practices and interventions possible. SWPBIS provides an
operational framework for achieving these outcomes. More importantly, SWPBIS is NOT a curriculum,
intervention or practice, but IS a decision-making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavioral outcomes for all students.” The goal of the program is to increase time to teach and
less time to deal with distracting or disruptive behaviors.
Frolio Middle School implements our SWPBIS at the beginning of each school year, which is
custom-tailored to our specific school. For the first three days of school, in addition to activities that help
teachers get to know each student, all faculty and staff members will teach what are called “TeachTo’s” (based on the Time to Teach Program) or expectations for behavior in all areas of the school including but not limited to the classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, restrooms, gym and in assemblies. In addition, we will introduce to the students a school-wide process for responding to non-compliant behaviors
at Frolio. So, wherever a student is in the school, the process will be the same if non-compliant, or inappropriate school behaviors are displayed. As a result, students know what is expected of them and also
know what to expect if they decide to not meet those expectations throughout our whole school community.
One of the major components of the SWPBIS is a process called REFOCUS. At the beginning of
the school year, the teachers will conduct a “Teach-To” on REFOCUSING. When a student does not
comply with a teacher request to discontinue a behavior that is deemed problematic, the teacher may tell
the student that he or she should REFOCUS, which means the student takes a reflection sheet to a
“buddy classroom” that has been pre-determined, completes the sheet while processing his/her behavior
and then re-enters the class. The REFOCUS portion of the SWPBIS gives the student the opportunity to
take ownership of the behavior, re-center himself or herself and once again enter class prepared to learn.
The four primary qualities and benefits of a SWPBIS are 1) consistency, 2) predictability, 3)
positive outlook: behavior can be corrected, and you are still an important person in my community of
learners, and 4) the fact that all of these qualities practiced over time lead to a safe school environment.
If you would like to learn more about the SWPBIS process, “Teach-To’s” or the REFOCUS process,
please go online to www.pbis.org and www.timetoteach.com.

for their outstanding academic performance to date. Eighth graders are
recognized, as well, at the end of the school year at our annual Eighth Grade Moving Up
Ceremony.
Parent Portal
Accessing Grades
There is no need to wait for a progress report or report card to find out how your child is
performing at Frolio Middle School. Maintain an ongoing connection with your child’s
academic performance throughout each trimester of the school year through the online Parent
Portal. Login instructions, specific to your child’s records, will be provided to all parents at
Open House Night on Thursday, September 8th.
Note: If you are unable to attend Open House,
the login information will be sent home with your child.
Your child will also have possession of the same login information,
so you may also access this information directly from your child.
Please contact your child’s teacher(s) at any time, as well.
Student Premier Agendas
Student agendas are given to every student on the first day of school. At this point in their education students should be
more independent with the use of this important planning and organizational tool. We ask for your support in reinforcing
its daily use. Your child will be instructed to record daily assignments, scheduled assessments, long-term assignments and
extra-curricular activities in his/her agenda. Periodically we will conduct random “agenda checks” to ensure that the
students are actively using their agenda. As adults, we are well aware of the benefits of maintaining clear plans and
goals. We ask that you assist us in instilling this important skill in your child’s daily living practice.
