YEAR 2- Suggested HOME LEARNING IDEAS to support learning at school English Animal Alphabet Can you make an animal alphabet and think of an animal that starts with every letter of the alphabet. Find a way to show us all the animals you have thought of. Mathematics Numbers Everywhere! Take a picture or make a list of 5 numbers you can see around you, e.g. on a birthday card or on a clothes label. Stick or write the numbers into your book in order from smallest to largest. What can you tell me about each number? E.g. is it odd or even? How many tens does it have? How many ones does it have? Which numbers can you add? Science History Geography Art & Design Design Technology All Around Britain Look at a map of the British Isles. Ask an adult to help you find some of the places … e.g. where you were born, holiday places, places where your relatives live. Rainforest Jigsaw Draw a picture of a rainforest animal. Now cut it out into jigsaw pieces. Can you put it back together again? What can you see? Draw a picture of either a rainforest setting or a rainforest animal. Label your drawing, e.g. vines/stripy fur. Write 2-3 sentences about your setting and animal. Measure it! Can you measure the length and height of the rainforest animals on the attached sheet? Remember to measure accurately. Put your measurements in cm and mm. e.g. 5cm 4mm Or 5.4 cm All Around the World Ask an adult to help you find some of the places … e.g. where you were born, holiday places, places where your relatives live or just places that you have heard about or even where some of you food comes from. AUTUMN1 TOPIC: Ramble in the Rainforest Rainforest Ramble If you were going to the rainforest what would you take with you? Draw pictures/ write a list to show what you would take. Perfect Punctuation Write 3 different sentences about animals living in the rainforest. Each sentence should end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. How does the punctuation you use change the sentence? Coin Count Up! Recognise different coins and add up amounts of money. Challenge yourself to find a new amount when some coins are taken away. Draw Me A…. Can you give instructions to your friend to draw a simple picture without telling them what they are drawing? Words like ‘left’, ‘right’, ‘above’, ‘below’, ‘next to’will help you. Quiz Master Write your own Rainforest themed quiz. How many questions do your friends get right? We Are What We Eat Go to the supermarket and look at the fruit and vegetables. Which part of the plant do we eat; root, stem, or leaves? Where in the world do they grow? Find a way to record and show everyone what you found out. Get creative! Use whatever materials you can find to make a model of your favourite rainforest animal. You could use paper plates, kitchen roll tubes, empty cereal boxes, etc. Rainforest Mask Make a paper plate mask of your favourite rainforest animal. Rainforest Rap! Perform the poem we have been learning in class for your family and friends (please leave this piece of homework until the last week of term!) Times Table Tennis With a friend or someone at home, practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s starting from zero. Take it in turns to ‘bat’ the next number to each other using your hand as a racket. For an extra challenge, try counting backwards or starting on a number that is not zero! Who Do You Think You Are? We want to know all about you! Rainforest Rap Make up a short song or rap about the rainforest. Try to include some rhyming words at the end of your lines. Practice throwing and catching with control. Throw a ball in the air and see how many times you can clap before catching it. Can you beat your own record? Practice bouncing a ball How many times can you bounce the ball? Challenge someone to a contest. Who won? Can you beat your own record? “Piggy in the middle” Play the game with 2 friends. Or make up your own bouncing, catching or throwing game. Find Your Way Ask a grown up to help you use Google Maps Street View. Can you find where you live? Look at the route from home to school. Can you write instructions about how to get there? Follow Me Give instructions to friend or family member to get to a certain place. Use forward, backward and turn right/left and get that person to physically follow your instructions. Do they reach the place that you wanted them to? Super Shapes Physical Education Computing Discussion Ideas Run through the rainforest! Make up your own rainforest routine. Jump over logs Duck under branches Run from the jaguar. Tip toe past the snake Etc… In a safe space, practise the 5 basic shapes used in gymnastics. Tuck, straddle, star, pike, and stretch. Can you challenge yourself to perform a balance using one of the shapes? Digital Research Ask a grown up to help you use the internet to find out about the animals that live in the rainforest. Draw a picture and record some of the information you find about one of the animals. Log on to Mathletics with your username and password. Spend some time developing your maths skills.
