Can you make an animal
alphabet and think of an
animal that starts with every
letter of the alphabet. Find a
way to show us all the
animals you have thought of.
Mathematics
Numbers Everywhere!
Take a picture or make a list
of 5 numbers you can see
around you, e.g. on a
birthday card or on a clothes
label.
Stick or write the numbers
into your book in order from
smallest to largest.
What can you tell me about
each number?
E.g. is it odd or even?
How many tens does it
have? How many ones does
it have? Which numbers can
you add?

All Around Britain
Look at a map of the British
Isles.
Ask an adult to help you find
some of the places … e.g.
where you were born,
holiday places, places
where your relatives live.
Rainforest Jigsaw
Draw a picture of a rainforest
animal. Now cut it out into
jigsaw pieces. Can you put it
back together again?
What can you see?
Draw a picture of either a
rainforest setting or a
rainforest animal.
Label your drawing, e.g.
vines/stripy fur. Write 2-3
sentences about your setting
and animal.
Measure it!
Can you measure the length
and height of the rainforest
animals on the attached
sheet?
Remember to measure
accurately.
Put your measurements in cm
and mm. e.g. 5cm 4mm
Or
5.4 cm
All Around the World
Ask an adult to help you find
some of the places … e.g.
where you were born, holiday
places, places where your
relatives live or just places that
you have heard about or
even where some of you food
comes from. Try to find a
rainforest!
Mini Rainforest
Make your own rainforest in a
shoebox. What animals are
living there?
AUTUMN1 TOPIC: Ramble in the Rainforest
Rainforest Ramble
If you were going to the
rainforest what would you
take with you? Draw
pictures/ write a list to show
what you would take.
Perfect Punctuation
Write 3 different sentences
about animals living in the
rainforest. Each sentence
should end with a full stop,
question mark or
exclamation mark. How
does the punctuation you
use change the sentence?
Coin Count Up!
Recognise different coins
and add up amounts of
money. Challenge yourself
to find a new amount when
some coins are taken away.
Draw Me A….
Can you give instructions to
your friend to draw a simple
picture without telling them
what they are drawing?
Words like ‘left’, ‘right’,
‘above’, ‘below’, ‘next
to’will help you.
Quiz Master
Write your own Rainforest
themed quiz. How many
questions do your friends
get right?
We Are What We Eat
Go to the supermarket and
look at the fruit and
vegetables. Which part of
the plant do we eat; root,
stem, or leaves? Where in
the world do they grow?
Find a way to record and
show everyone what you
found out.
Get creative!
Use whatever materials you
can find to make a model
of your favourite rainforest
animal. You could use
paper plates, kitchen roll
tubes, empty cereal boxes,
etc.
Rainforest Mask
Make a paper plate mask of
your favourite rainforest
animal.
Rainforest Rap!
Perform the poem we have
been learning in class for
your family and friends
(please leave this piece of
homework until the last week
of term!)
Times Table Tennis
With a friend or someone at
home, practise counting in
2s, 5s and 10s starting from
zero.
Take it in turns to ‘bat’ the
next number to each other
using your hand as a racket.
For an extra challenge, try
counting backwards or
starting on a number that is
not zero!
Who Do You Think You Are?
We want to know all about
you! You could tell us about
unique you by creating:

a piece of art

a family tree

a poem
Rainforest Butterfly
Design your own symmetrical
rainforest butterfly.
Watch it fly!

bies/games/charlie-and-lolabutterflygallery
Now try and make one out
of paper!
Music
Listen to some sounds of the rainforest.
Make a list of some of the sounds you think you can hear. Are
there any animal sounds you can identify?

Short or long?
Find some hard objects in
your home (e.g. pans, bins,
boxes) that could be
tapped to make a sound. Is
this sound long or short?
Find a way to show what
you have found.
Make a ‘junk’ musical
instrument
Can you create your own
musical instrument using
rubbish?
Use old cardboard boxes,
yoghurt pots, bits of string,
and anything else you can
find!
Rainforest Rap
Make up a short song or rap
about the rainforest.
Try to include some rhyming
words at the end of your
lines.
Practice throwing and
catching with control.
Throw a ball in the air and
see how many times you
can clap before catching it.
Can you beat your own
record?
Practice bouncing a ball
How many times can you
bounce the ball? Challenge
someone to a contest. Who
won? Can you beat your
own record?
“Piggy in the middle”
Play the game with 2 friends.
Or make up your own
bouncing, catching or
throwing game.
Find Your Way
Ask a grown up to help you
use Google Maps Street
View.
Can you find where you
live? Look at the route from
home to school. Can you
write instructions about how
to get there?
Follow Me
Give instructions to friend or
family member to get to a
certain place. Use forward,
backward and turn right/left
and get that person to
physically follow your
instructions. Do they reach
the place that you wanted
them to?

things with respect?
Are instructions important?
When are instructions useful?
Should we always follow
them?
Mathletics
Could you live in the
rainforest?
Why/why not?

You may wish to supplement your child’s home learning ideas with some extra practice of mathematics concepts.
We would recommend practice books by WHSmith to support ‘tools’ and ‘strategies’ taught in school.
The books suggested above are:
WHSmith Practice Maths Age 6-7 Year 2 Key Stage 1 ISBN 978-1-4441-8800-4
WHSmith Challenge Maths Age 7-8 Year 3 Key Stage 2 ISBN 978-1-4441-8841-7
(for more confident mathematicians)
WHSmith also produce a Progress Test book in this range for developing your child’s mental maths strategies and for assessing progress and confidence in mathematical concepts.
A guide to the strand of maths your child has been focussing on for the week has been listed below.
