About Us
Why is it called Murphy’s Dirty 30?
‘Murphy’s Dirty 30 Mud Volleyball Tournament’ (aka Habitat Mud Volleyball)
was conceptualized by Tim Murphy and a few of his friends in 2007. With
his 30th birthday looming, Murphy and his buddies brainstormed ways to
celebrate the landmark day and decided that for his “Dirty 30” they would
throw a Mud Volleyball tournament. After further discussion they decided
this event would be even better if they could raise money for Habitat For
Humanity. That first year they were so happy to get a whopping 12 teams!
Every year the tournament has grown!
2007 12 teams
2008 30 teams
2009 50 teams (300 players + 150 spectators)
2010 73 teams (438 players 250 + spectators)
2011 76 teams (456 players + 300 spectators)
2012 we are capping at 84 teams (504 players + 350 spectators)
What is Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte?
Habitat Charlotte builds affordable homes for low-income families who
currently live in inadequate housing and who want to own their own home.
Habitat Charlotte builds houses along with families who demonstrate a need
for housing, the ability to pay a no-interest monthly mortgage, and also a
willingness to partner with Habitat Charlotte. Home ownership is arguable
the most important aspect of an enduring community. To find out more
about Habitat Charlotte’s work, visit www.HabitatCharlotte.org.
You can help! By becoming an event sponsor or by making an in-kind
contribution to Habitat Mud Volleyball, you will enable us to provide essential
building materials for families in need. For just $250, you can give a family
shingles, nails, a toilet, and two windows; for $750, you can get siding for an
entire home; for $1,500, you can sponsor a complete kitchen.
How does Habitat Mud Volleyball affect Charlotte?
With the help from Habitat Young Professionals (HYP) of Charlotte, Habitat
Mud Volleyball strives to raise funds in order to build safe and affordable
homes for our community! With the participation of volunteers, sponsors,
teams, and even spectators of this event, we plan to collect enough money
to sponsor construction projects in 2012 and 2013. With funds raised at
the 2010 tournament, HYP was able to fully sponsor a Critical Home Repair
Project for a local Charlotte family. Find out more about HYP’s 2012 Objectives
at www.HYPCharlotte.org.
