Ingredients
- 2 lbs. large sea scallops
-Finely grated lime zest, plus 2 tbsp. fresh lime
juice
-1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
-1½ lbs. honeydew melon cut into ¼” dice (2½
cups), rind removed
- 1 Hass avocado cut into ¼” dice
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Light the grill. In a large bowl, combine the lime zest and juice with
1 tbsp. olive oil. Using a spatula, gently fold in the diced honeydew
melon and avocado. Season the salsa with salt and black pepper.
2. Drizzle the scallops with olive oil and season with salt and black
pepper. Grill over moderately high heat, turning once, until nicely
charred and just cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Transfer
the scallops to plates, spoon the salsa alongside and serve.

“Wood” You Believe It:
Scott’s Addition Edition
Scott’s Addition might sound like a very unique name
for a neighborhood, but truth be told, there are actually
a number of communities that share in its namesake.
Scott’s Addition is named for General Winfield Scott, a
national hero of the War of 1812 as well as the MexicanAmerican War. Today, history knows him best for
conceiving of the Anaconda Plan, the Civil War strategy
that eventually led the Union to victory.
Decades earlier, on March 11, 1817, General Scott
wed Maria Mayo, who was considered the “most
celebrated Richmond belle of her time” and daughter to
area landowner Colonel John Mayo. Upon the Colonel’s
death in May 1818, the Scotts inherited the land that
is today known as Scott’s Addition. This area would
remain mostly undeveloped until it was annexed by the
City of Richmond in 1914, and it’s safe to assume this
annexation provides the ‘Addition’ part of the name.

Of course, General Scott didn’t only leave
his mark in Richmond. Having served
as Commanding General of the U.S.
Army for 20 years (longer than anyone
else in history), he traveled all over
this great country. Today, there are
Scott counties named for him in
Kansas, Virginia, Minnesota, Iowa
and Tennessee. Also named for him
are: Winfield, Illinois; Winfield, Indiana;
Winfield, Alabama; and Winfield,
West Virginia.
As far as we know, though,
there are no communities
that share General Scott’s
nickname, “Old Fuss and
Feathers.” Makes sense
— Old Fuss and Feathers
Addition just doesn’t have
quite the same ring to it.
