THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP
• The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is Britain's premier jockeys' competition, a unique event where top jockeys in four teams - Great
Britain and Ireland, Europe, the Rest of the World and for the first time this year The Girls - battle against each other in a thrilling sixrace showdown.
• The six races are limited to 10 runners with either two or three horses racing for each team (this will balance itself out over the course
of the afternoon), and points are awarded on a 15, 10, 7, 5, 3 basis to the first five horses home (non runners score 4 points). Subject
to full fields, each jockey has five rides and the team with the highest total after the sixth race lifts the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.
• All six races are handicaps and all will be run with identical prize money - £30,000 per race.
• Owners have a fantastic opportunity on Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Day - there are no entry fees for the races, there is prize
money down to last place (with reserves that miss out on a run paid £500 travel money) and there is complimentary hospitality
throughout the day.
• Dubai Duty Free has been associated with the Shergar Cup since its inception, initially as team sponsor of the Rest of the World team
and as a race sponsor. In 2006, the company became title sponsor of the whole event for the first time.
• The three male teams will go against the first ever all-female team to take part in an international jockeys’ competition. The Girls
team is made of up of arguably the world’s three top female riders, Hayley Turner (Captain, UK), Chantal Sutherland (Canada/USA)
and Emma-Jayne Wilson (Canada). Turner is the most successful female rider ever in Great Britain and bagged two Group One
successes in 2011 on Dream Ahead and Margot Did while this season she became only the second female jockey to ride in the
Investec Derby at Epsom. Her team mates both hail from North America. Chantal Sutherland has clocked close to 1,000 successes
and landed the historic Grade One Santa Anita Handicap in 2011 on Game On Dude and also finished runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup
Classic on the same horse. Eclipse Award-winning Emma-Jayne Wilson, who has also enjoyed almost 1,000 victories in the USA and
Canada, became the first-ever female champion jockey at Woodbine and also landed the Grade One Queen’s Plate, part of Canada’s
Triple Crown, on Mike Fox in 2007. Wilson is participating in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup for the second time, having ridden in the
2006 event.
• The line-up for the Rest of the World team is Yutaka Take (Captain, Japan), Aaron Gryder (USA) and Matthew Chadwick (Hong
Kong). Yutaka Take is the legendary Japanese superstar who has been crowned champion jockey in his homeland no less than 18
times and who has ridden four Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup winners in his five appearances in the competition to date. The highly
experienced Aaron Gryder flies in from San Francisco to have his first experience of riding in Britain since 1992. He has won titles at
Churchill Downs, Arlington Park and Aqueduct and also had a successful stint in Hong Kong, but is best known for his Dubai World
Cup win on Well Armed in 2009 which was achieved by a stunning margin of a 14 lengths, a record for the world’s richest horse race.
Matthew Chadwick promises to be the best ever home-grown jockey in Hong Kong. He started as an apprentice in Hong Kong well into
the 2008/9 season, yet still won the champion apprentice title with 43 winners and rode out his claim in January, 2010, in a Hong Kong
record of one year and three weeks. Chadwick has already had a taste of riding in Britain this summer and enjoyed his first victory in
the UK on the Charlie Hills-trained Red Explorer at Ffos Las on July 24.
• The line-up for the European team is Frankie Dettori (Captain, Italy), Andreas Suborics (Germany) and Cristian Demuro (Italy).
Dettori, 41, has not been able to take part in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup since 2008 due to his commitments with Godolphin but
the popular Italian, who will forever be associated with his “Magnificent Seven” at Ascot in 1996, returns in 2012. Andreas Suborics,
three times champion jockey in Germany, last took part in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup in 2007. Ironically that was the last time
August 11 was the date for the Shergar Cup – it is Suborics’ birthday which he will once again celebrate at Ascot, this time bringing his
wife over with him as he turns 41. Cristian Demuro, 20, Mirco’s younger brother, won the Italian championship last year at the age of
just 19 after riding 222 winners during the season. He partnered 153 winners in 2010 to finish second in the table and has also ridden
winners in Japan, where he has spent two successful stints, and Dubai.
• Two of the most experienced members of the weighing room in Kieren Fallon (Captain, Ireland) and Johnny Murtagh (Ireland) plus
exciting young talent James Doyle (Great Britain) make up the Great Britain and Ireland team. Fallon, who has been crowned
champion jockey on six occasions, has enjoyed Group One success around the globe and ridden the winner of the Derby on three
occasions while Murtagh boasts a similarly glittering career, also having ridden three Derby winners among an array of big-race
victories. James Doyle, who grew up not far from Ascot in the Lambourn area, has seen his career really take off in 2012 following his
association with the powerful Roger Charlton stable. Doyle enjoyed his biggest career success on Cityscape in the Group One Dubai
Duty Free in March.
• The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is being run for the 12th time at Ascot. The Shergar Cup first took place at Ascot in 2000 when it
was staged as an owners’ competition. It became a jockeys’ competition in 2001 and has gone from strength to strength ever since,
attracting bumper crowds year after year. The one year it did not take place was 2005 when the racecourse was being redeveloped.
• The jockeys competing in the four-team Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will again wear full team colours at this year’s renewal. Please
see the jockeys’ biographies section (pages 10 -13) for further information on this year’s team colours.
• The “Girl Power” theme continues in the post-racing concert, when some of the top female acts from the 1980s will appear live on
stage at Ascot. They include Bananarama, who with 30 Top 40 hits remain the Guinness Book of Records’ most successful girl band
of all time, Carol Decker, who fronted the rock band T’Pau, Katrina Leskanich, former lead singer of Katrina and The Waves, and solo
artist Belinda Carlisle.
• Midge Ure, the former front man of “Ultravox”, Howard Jones and Rick Astley are the male stars from the ‘80s who will be performing.

THE PRIZES
The Shergar Cup
At stake for the winning team is the magnificent Shergar Cup, which depicts the mighty 1981 Derby and King
George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner. It was graciously provided by His Highness The Aga Khan, who
owned Shergar.
Points will be awarded to the first five horses to finish in each of the six Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup races as
follows - winner: 15 points; second: 10 points; third: 7 points; fourth: 5 points; fifth: 3 points. If there is a nonrunner which cannot be replaced by a reserve, 4 points will be awarded both to the team and jockey missing
out on the ride. The team with the most points after the six races have been run will receive the Shergar Cup
at the closing ceremony.
If a dead-heat occurs in a race, the points for the two places are added together, divided by two and shared
between the two jockeys/teams.
If there is a tie for the Team or Silver Saddle competitions, there will be a countback on the number of winners
and the team/jockey with the most winners will be adjudged the winner overall; if they are still level, then 2nd
places will be counted, then if necessary 3rd places, then if necessary 4th places. If they are still level, there
will be joint winners.
The six races are worth a total of £180,000 in prize money, paid down to 10th (last) place in all six races. With
no entry fees to pay and £50 in numbercloth sponsorship per runner for Channel 4-televised races, these are
the only races run during the year in Britain when every owner represented by a runner should be guaranteed
to, at the very least, cover their costs.
Silver Saddle
The jockey amassing the most individual points will take home an additional £3,000 plus the “Silver Saddle”
trophy.
David Flores in 2001, Richard Hughes in 2002, Kieren Fallon in 2003, Weichong Marwing in 2004, Ryan
Moore in 2006, Hugh Bowman in 2007, Gerald Mosse in 2008, Richard Hughes for a second time in 2009,
Fran Berry in 2010 and Paul Hanagan in 2011 are the past winners of the Silver Saddle.
Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day
One jockey will receive the Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day Award, which will be judged by Derby-winning
jockey John Reid.
Stable Staff Awards
The stable staff will once again benefit from special prizes worth over £5,000, more than on any other raceday
in Britain. There is a £200 prize for the groom in charge of the best turned out horse in every race, while the
winning lad or lass in each race will receive £200 plus a free entry (worth over £80) into the Dubai Duty Free
Finest Surprise Draw to win a luxury car. In addition, £100 will be given to the lad or lass leading up the 2nd,
3rd, 4th and 5th horses (i.e. the other points scorers) in every race. In addition, stable staff will enjoy free food
and drink in the stable staff canteen.

8
DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP RULES
The competition is an international jockeys’ tournament with 12 riders taking part, three in
each of the four teams – the Girls (GIRLS) Great Britain & Ireland (GBI), Europe (EUR) and
Rest of the World (ROW). All horses entered are eligible to represent one of the four teams,
regardless of ownership, and to be ridden by any of the jockeys participating in the
competition.
The six races will be limited to 10 runners and two reserves.
Reserves must travel to Ascot on the day and can be substituted up until 45 minutes before
their race. Reserves who do not run will be paid £500.
Entries must be made noon on Monday, August 6.
Declarations to run must be made at the 48-hour stage, by 10.00am on Thursday, August 9.
The top 10 in the weights (including penalties) at the 48-hour declaration stage will run with
those horses 11th and 12th in the weights acting as reserves.
DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP 'DRAW' PROCEDURE
The British Horseracing Authority has granted special permission to the Ascot Racecourse
Executive to stage a 'Draw' on Thursday, August 9, at which jockeys from the four competing
teams of Great Britain, Ireland, Europe and the Rest of the World will be allocated to horses.
ALLOCATION OF HORSES TO TEAMS AND JOCKEYS TO MOUNTS
1. In all races, the horses selected to run will be those with highest official BHA ratings.
2. Once the final fields are known on Thursday, August 9, the 10 runners in each race will be
ranked from 1 to 10 by form experts/odds compilers from Ladbrokes, the Official Bookmaker
to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. A complex formula has been created to ensure that
each of the four teams – Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, the Rest of the World and The Girls
- receives a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses and, further to that,
that each of the three jockeys representing each team also gets a balanced spread of higher
and lower ranked/priced horses for his/her five rides.
3. Once the ranking process has been completed, the four team names will go into a ballot.
The order in which they are randomly drawn will determine which set of horses is allocated to
each team.
4. A second ballot will then take place. The three jockeys representing each team will be
drawn at random to determine an order (e.g. The Girls 1, The Girls 2 & The Girls 3) and will
then be allocated to their rides according to the set formula.
5. The allocation of rides by this method will be final. Any trainer declaring a horse to run at
the 48-hour declaration stage is deemed to have accepted these conditions.
6. All owners of participating horses agree that jockeys will wear the colours of the team
which they represent as part of an agreement with the Racehorse Owners Association.
9
THE GIRLS TEAM
Hayley Turner (Captain, Great Britain)
Hayley Turner, the joint champion UK apprentice jockey in 2005, is the most successful female rider to emerge in the history of
the racing in Britain. Born on January 3, 1983, in Nottingham, Turner was taught to ride by her mother, a riding instructor. She
started riding out for trainer Mark Polglase, who supplied her first winner, Generate, at Pontefract on June 4, 2000. She also
attended the Northern Racing College, and then was apprenticed to Michael Bell in Newmarket. Turner became the first
woman to be crowned champion apprentice when partnering 44 winners during the 2005 Flat (turf) season, sharing the title
with Saleem Golam. She also became only the fourth woman in Britain to ride out her claim, following Emma O'Gorman, Alex
Greaves and Lisa Jones. Her success during the 2005 season led to Turner being awarded a Lester for apprentice jockey of
the year, the first woman ever to land the award. Turner’s first Group One victory came in July, 2011 aboard Dream Ahead in
the Darley July Cup at Newmarket and she enjoyed further Group One success as Margot Did captured the Coolmore
Nunthorpe Stakes at York the following month. She is only the second woman to have ridden a Group One winner in Britain
and the first to win one outright as Alex Greaves’ success came when her mount Ya Malak dead-heated with Coastal Bluff for
the 1997 Nunthorpe Stakes. In 2008, she became the first female jockey to partner 100 winners in a calendar year in Britain.
Turner was forced to miss four months of the 2009 Flat season after an incident on the Newmarket gallops that March, when
catapulted from the horse she was riding and knocked unconscious. Turner's injuries - bruising to the brain - were originally considered serious enough
that her licence was suspended for a year. However, following an appeal hearing at the British Horseracing Authority in July, she was declared fit to
resume race riding and came back at Ascot the following day. She has ridden at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on six occasions (2006, 2007, 2008,
2009, 2010 and 2011) and captained the GBR team in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Turner has recorded four wins in the competition and was runner-up to
Hugh Bowman in the 2007 Silver Saddle Standings. This season she became only the second woman to ride in the Investec Derby at Epsom Downs,
although her mount Cavaleiro finished last.
Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Wins: 2007 Relative Order; 2008 Gee Dee Nen; 2009 Noverre To Go; 2010 Yorgunnabelucky
Emma-Jayne Wilson (Canada)
Born on September 1, 1981, at Brampton in Ontario, Emma-Jayne Wilson is a riding phenomenon from Canada, with nearly
1,000 wins to her name. She burst onto the North American racing scene in 2005 when landing the riding title at Woodbine. At
its 167-day meet, Wilson rode 175 winners from 1,096 mounts, becoming the first female to take the title in its 50-year history,
and only the third ever apprentice to do so, following Sandy Hawley in 1969 and Mickey Walls in 1991. Wilson started riding at
the age of nine and soon had her heart set on becoming a jockey. She studied equine management at the University of Guelph
and spent two years riding out at Woodbine racecourse, where she caught the eye of leading agent Mike Luider. She rode her
first winner on only her second ride - a horse called Ali Olah at Fort Erie, on August 28, 2004, and enjoyed an annus mirabilis in
her first full season as an apprentice, recording a first Stakes victory on board Classic Stamp in the Grade Two Bell Canadian
Stakes to go with her leading jockey title at Woodbine. Her achievements on the racetrack were rewarded with a Sovereign
Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey (with 146 wins for the year) and an Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey
in North America - becoming only the second woman ever to land the apprentice Eclipse award. Wilson retained her leading
jockeys’ title at Woodbine in 2006 with 144 successes and received a second Sovereign Award for Outstanding Apprentice
Jockey. She became the first female rider to win the Grade One Queen’s Plate, part of Canada’s Triple Crown, when scoring
on board Mike Fox in June, 2007. Wilson competed in the Hong Kong International Jockey Challenge in December, 2007, and was granted a licence to
ride in the former colony the following winter. She was out of action for nearly three months following a fall at Woodbine in August 21, 2010, when she
suffered a lacerated liver. Wilson made an impressive debut at the Breeders’ Cup in November, 2011, partnering Excaper to finish second behind Wrote
in the Grade One Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. She ended 2011 with 135 winners at Woodbine and 143 in all. As of August 6, 2012, she has recorded
988 wins in her career with prize money of more than US$46 million. Wilson, who won the inaugural Pimlico Female Jockey Challenge in June, 2011, is
making her second appearance at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, having participated in the competition in 2006.
No previous Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup wins
Chantal Sutherland (Canada/USA)
Born on February 23, 1976, at Winnipeg in Canada, Chantal Sutherland is a leading jockey in both her homeland and the USA.
She grew up in Ontario, where her father Hugh owns a horse farm. Although she competed in showjumping and dressage
during her youth and was also an accomplished field hockey player (competing for Canada’s national Junior World Cup team),
she did not decide to embark on a career as a jockey until her graduation from York University in Toronto, where she gained a
degree in communications and psychology. After her initial success on Silver Bounty at Woodbine on October 9, 2000,
Sutherland quickly established herself as one of the brightest talents in North American racing and gained the Sovereign Award
for Canada’s top apprentice jockey in 2001 and 2002. The 2002 campaign ended with Sutherland finishing third in the
standings at Woodbine with 124 wins. In the winter of 2004, she made the move across the border to the USA and rode at
Laurel Park in Maryland before switching to Florida and New York. During her time in New York, where she rode for leading
trainers Allen Jerkens and Todd Pletcher, she enjoyed success at Grade Three level on Smokume in the Tom Fool Handicap
and on Gigawatt in the Miami Mile Handicap. After a return to Canada in 2007, she made the move to Santa Anita, California,
where she was dubbed “Queen of the longshots” by US Racing Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens. In 2008, she was back in
Canada and on August 9 rode five winners in a day. That same season also saw Sutherland partner future Kentucky Derby
hero Mine That Bird to three stakes race successes at Woodbine. Sutherland then split her time between riding at Santa Anita in the winter and the rest
of the year at Woodbine. The best horse Sutherland has ridden is Game On Dude. In March, 2011, she partnered the Bob Baffert-trained gelding to
victory in the Grade One Santa Anita Handicap, becoming the first female jockey to win the historic contest and she enjoyed another Grade One victory
on the same horse in the Goodwood Stakes, also at Santa Anita, in October. Last year Game On Dude also finished runner-up under Sutherland in the
Grade One Hollywood Gold Cup and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Drosselmeyer, ironically was ridden by her
ex-boyfriend Mike Smith. Game On Dude also enabled Sutherland to become the first woman to ride in the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup, at
Meydan in March, 2012. The pair finished 12th. Sutherland is also a well-known celebrity off the track. She starred in the reality series “Jockeys” on
Animal Planet, had a recurring role in the HBO TV series “Luck” and remains an aspiring actress. She has also modelled and was the face of Canadabased cosmetics line Mistura Beauty. As of August 6, 2012, Sutherland, who is 5f 2in, has ridden 929 career winners with earnings of $46,187,950. She
currently lives in Huntington Beach, California, with her husband Dan and is the new face of Del Mar Racecourse.

EUROPE TEAM
Frankie Dettori (Captain, Italy)
Born in Milan on December 15, 1970, the son of Gianfranco, 13-time champion jockey in Italy, Frankie (christened Lanfranco)
Dettori arrived from his homeland to join Luca Cumani's Newmarket yard as an apprentice in July, 1985. His first success came
on Rif at Turin, Italy, on November 16, 1986, and he rode his first British winner on Lizzy Hare at Goodwood on June 9, 1987.
He was champion British apprentice in 1989 and passed 100 winners for the first time in 1990 when recording 141 successes.
He has since captured the hearts of racegoers with his flamboyant style, phenomenal riding successes, and charisma in and
out of the saddle. Champion jockey in 1994, 1995 and 2004, Dettori created history when riding all seven winners on the
Saturday at the Ascot Festival in September, 1996. His ground-breaking exertions brought recognition beyond racing's own
sphere when he was voted into third place in the 1996 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards and was a team captain on
‘A Question Of Sport'. He finally captured at the 15th attempt the Investec Derby in 2007 aboard Authorized and he has tasted
success in all four other English Classics at least once with 14 Classic wins in total. Five of those have come in the Ladbrokes
St Leger aboard Classic Cliché (1995), Shantou (1996), Scorpion (2005), Sixties Icon (2006) and Conduit (2008). He has won
the QIPCO 2000 Guineas twice (1996 Mark Of Esteem and 1999 Island Sands), the QIPCO 1000 Guineas thrice (Cape Verdi
1998, Kazzia 2002 and Blue Bunting 2011) and the Investec Oaks three times (Balanchine 1994, Moonshell 1995 and Kazzia 2002). Dettori, retained by
Godolphin since 1993, has enjoyed a host of high-profile international successes, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1995, 2001 and 2002 on
Lammtarra, Sakhee and Marienbard respectively, the Japan Cup on Singspiel in 1996, Falbrav in 2002 and Alkaased in 2005, the Dubai World Cup on
Dubai Millennium (2000), Moon Ballad (2003) and Electrocutionist (2006), the Breeders' Cup Turf on Daylami (1999), Fantastic Light (2001), Red Rocks
(2006) and Dangerous Midge (2010) and the 2008 Breeders' Cup Classic on Raven's Pass. He celebrated his 500th Group race victory on Dabirsim in
the Prix Jean-Luc Lagadere at Longchamp on October 2, 2011. He has ridden well over 3,000 winners with more than 900 of them being for Godolphin,
including 110 at Group One level. Dettori, who survived an horrific plane crash at Newmarket in 2000 in which the pilot was killed, is married to
Catherine. They have five children and live near Newmarket.
Previous Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup wins (3): 1999 Mythical Girl, Diktat; 2004 Justaquestion; 2007 Strategic Mount
Andreas Suborics (Germany)
Andreas Suborics was born on August 11, 1971, in Vienna, Austria. He rode his first winner on Donjana at Vienna on April 4,
1988, and moved from his homeland to Germany in 1993 and is currently based in Cologne. His first major win on the
European scene came at Longchamp in the 1996 Group One Prix de la Foret, partnering A Magicman to victory. Suborics has
gone on to enjoy success at the highest level around the world. Tiger Hill is one of the best horses he has ridden, providing him
with successes in two of Germany's most prestigious races - the Grosser Preis Von Baden in 1998 and the Grosser Dallmayr
Preis in 1999. The 2001 season was most memorable for Suborics, largely thanks to the globetrotting Silvano. He rode that
horse to success in the Arlington Million in Chicago as well as the Singapore Cup at Kranji and the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at
Sha Tin, Hong Kong. Paolini provided the rider with two Group One victories in Italy in 2001, capturing the Gran Premio di
Milano and the Premio Presidente della Repubblica. In 2002, Suborics won the German jockeys' title for the first time with 82
winners and was champion again in 2004 and 2006. In 2004, he partnered his first Deutches Derby winner in Shirocco and won
the German Oaks on Amarette. Shirocco went on to enjoy Group One success in Italy later in the same season with Suborics
aboard, while he also won the 2004 Criterium de Saint-Cloud on Paita. Suborics sustained serious chest injuries after a fall at
Kyoto, Japan, in January, 2005, but made a full recovery and was back in the saddle four months later. In recent seasons, the
most famous horse he has partnered is the superstar Hungarian sprinter Overdose although the partnership was denied a famous victory in the 2008
Prix de l’Abbaye when the race was declared void. In March, 2010, Suborics sustained head injuries following a fall when riding work in Hong Kong and,
on medical advice, announced his retirement that August. However, in December, 2010, the jockey revealed that he had made an excellent recovery
and had been given the green light by doctors to resume his riding career. He has participated in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup three times - in
2002, 2003 and 2007.

Cristian Demuro (Italy)
Italian champion jockey Cristian Demuro, born on July 8, 1992, is the youngest brother of five-time Italian champion jockey
Mirco Demuro. Cristian grew up in Rome and had experience with show jumpers before joining the Pisa Racing School. He
graduated in 2008 and joined Bruno Grizzetti’s stable - one of the leading yards in Italy. He rode his first winner on Peperita,
trained by Grizzetti, at Varese Racecourse on May 7, 2009, at the tender age of 16. He partnered a further 43 winners in 2009
and was champion apprentice. After a good start to the 2010 season, he was appointed stable jockey to Allevamento La Nuova
Sbarra that April, but also had a second agreement with Grizzetti. La Nuova Sbarra is the stud and stable name of Romebased property developer Sergio Scarpellini and his son Andrea. It is the biggest stable in Italy, owning around 100 horses
spread around a number of trainers in the country. With the backing of two big stables, Demuro proved he was a top-class pilot,
finishing second in the jockeys’ championship behind Umberto Rispoli with 153 winners. In 2011, Demuro rode in Japan
between January and March before returning to Italy and partnering an astonishing 222 winners to be crowned champion
jockey. He also gained his first winner at Meydan, Dubai, on Averroes in a 14-furlong handicap on December 31. Demuro went
back to Japan earlier this year and enjoyed a successful spell, winning the Grade Three Himba Stakes on Donau Blue on
January 29 and the Grade Three Tulip Show on Hana’s Girl on March 3. Since his return to Italy in mid-March, Demuro has
amassed over 100 winners including a Group Three victory on Noble Hachy in the Premio Carlo Chiesa in April. Demuro has had 16 Listed race winners
and four Group Three winners in his career to date. His interests outside of racing include football. The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup introduces
Demuro to British racing. His older brother has been riding here since May.

Yutaka Take (Captain, Japan)
The subject of national adulation in Japan, where he is the country’s top sporting figure, Yutaka Take was born in Kyoto on
March 15, 1969, the son of legendary jockey turned trainer Kunihiko Take, who was known as the ‘Magician of the Turf’. He
rode his first winner on Dyna Bishop at Hanshin on March 7, 1987, and won 69 races when champion apprentice that year, a
record for a first season rider. Take has been champion Japanese jockey 18 times (1989-1990, 1992-2000 and 2002-2008
inclusive) and his 2005 title saw him win a record 212 races. He has won races at Group One level for 24 consecutive seasons.
In 1991 he became the first Japanese rider to win a Pattern race overseas when taking the Grade Three Seneca Stakes on El
Senor at Saratoga, USA, and was also the first Japanese jockey to win a Pattern race in Europe when landing the 1994 Prix du
Moulin on Ski Paradise at Longchamp, France, as well as the first to score in Britain, when winning the 2000 Darley July Cup at
Newmarket on Agnes World. Take is an internationally renowned jockey who has travelled extensively and was based in
California in 2000 and rode in France during the 2001 and 2002 seasons, before returning to his domestic base. He partnered
the great Deep Impact in all of his races, including the 2005 Japanese Triple Crown. Take participated at the 2003, 2004, 2007,
2008 and 2011 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cups. He won his first race at Ascot in the 2007 competition, steering the Tony
Martin-trained Leg Spinner to success in the Shergar Cup Stayers Handicap. In 2008, he rode Strike Up The Band to win the
Shergar Cup Dash and Nan’s Joy to land the Shergar Cup Distaff, placing him second in that year’s Silver Saddle leading rider
competition. On July 22, 2007, Take established a record in Japan when recording his 2,944th success at a Japan Racing Association (JRA) track,
passing the record of 2,943 achieved by Yukio Okabe. On November 3, 2007, Take reached another milestone in his career when becoming the first
JRA rider to record 3,000 victories. That win, on two-year-old Sky Beauty at Kyoto racecourse, was his 14,288th JRA ride and came 20 years and eight
months after the jockey made his career debut. The 5f 7in jockey’s numerous notable victories include three in the Japan Cup thanks to Special Week
(1999), Deep Impact (2006) and Rose Kingdom (2010).

Aaron Gryder (USA)
Born on June 5, 1970, Aaron Gryder grew up in West Covina, California, near Santa Anita Racecourse and although he had
little contact with horses when he was younger, he was influenced by his father and uncle, who were racing fans, and wanted
to be a jockey. He left home aged 13 to learn to ride at the invitation of former jockey Rudy Campas and returned to Santa
Anita to ride professionally at the age of 16. The racecourse stewards suggested he got experience at a smaller racecourse, so
Gryder chose to improve his riding at Agua Caliente Racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico. He partnered his first winner on January 19,
1987, on Ragin Henry and quickly established himself as a leading jockey at Agua Caliente. He accepted a request to return to
California and finished 1987 as the leading apprentice at Hollywood Park which also yielded his first Grade One winner
courtesy of Asteroid Field in the Matriarch Stakes. Gryder’s career took off after that and he moved east, gaining riding titles
and big race victories at some of the main tracks on the midwest and east coast circuits. In 1992 he won the $750,000 Super
Derby on Senor Tomas at Louisiana Downs. He has won titles at Churchill Downs, Arlington Park and Aqueduct, where he was
the leading rider on four consecutive occasions between 1998 and 2001. During the 1999/2000 meet he rode a remarkable 94
winners, 32 more than his nearest rival. He moved to California in 2007 and partnered his 3,000th winner on Pressthepace at
Santa Anita on March 7. After returning to the west coast, he built up a good relationship with European import Well Armed,
riding him to victory in the Grade One Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita in September, 2008, before partnering the Eoin Harty-trained gelding to a
stunning 14-length victory in the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup the following March - the biggest winning margin in the event’s history. In
November, 2009, Gryder moved to Hong Kong after securing a licence to ride there during the winter and enjoyed a successful spell before returning to
America after riding in the inaugural Meydan Masters series in Dubai in March, 2010. He took in the southern circuit, riding predominantly at Oaklawn
Park, Lone Star Park and Remington Park, before switching to California’s Golden Gate Fields in 2011. Gryder has made frequent appearances on
television, starring on Animal Planet’s series “Jockeys” whilst he also offers analysis on TVG. He also had television roles in “Dellaventura” and “The
Sopranos”. Gryder, also involved with children’s charities, is one of the founders and directors of The Giving Circle, originally created to help Hurricane
Katrina victims and now helps communities all over the world. Gryder’s hobbies include cycling, water sports, running and working out. The 5ft 6in
jockey has partnered 3,556 North American winners (up to July 2), with earnings of over US$111 million and has ridden in Britain once before when
American-trained Diamonds Galore finished third in the 1992 Nunthorpe Stakes at York.

Matthew Chadwick (Hong Kong)
Matthew Chadwick, born on July 12, 1990, is the rising star in Hong Kong racing after a sensational start to his riding career.
Chadwick, of Chinese decent, was adopted as a child by Hong Kong-based British couple Jennifer and Chris Chadwick who
are both teachers. Matthew’s passion for horses and riding was ignited on a holiday to Britain where he rode ponies and,
although achieving good grades at school, he signed up for the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s training scheme aged 14. As with
many young jockeys, the HKJC sent Chadwick to Australia to gain some experience. He started in Australia at Maryann
Thexton’s Gold Coast stable and rode his first winner at Beaudesert, before joining Brett Bellamy ahead of the Coffs Harbour
Festival. On June 21, 2008, Chadwick had his first rides for Bellamy at Lismore. On a five-race card, Chadwick had four rides
and won all of them, including the feature Kyogle Cup. He continued to impress many racing professionals and punters in
Australia, riding a further 21 winners before being granted a licence in Hong Kong in December, 2008. He was based with
leading trainer Tony Cruz and despite starting late, he ended the 2008/09 season as champion apprentice with 43 winners. The
2009/10 season yielded more success for Chadwick, including his first Group victory on Egyptian Ra in the National Day Cup.
In January, 2010, he set a new benchmark when riding out his claim (70 winners) in a one year and three weeks, the fastest in
Hong Kong history, while also partnering Egyptian Ra to a second Group Three success in the Chinese Club Challenge Cup.
Chadwick ended the season in fourth place in the jockeys’ championship. In February, 2011, he gained his first HK Group One victory on California
Memory in the Hong Kong Gold Cup before partnering the grey gelding to an even bigger success in the Group One Hong Kong Cup in December,
2011, becoming the first homegrown jockey to win a Hong Kong International Race. Chadwick ended the latest season in Hong Kong in fifth place with
44 wins and has enjoyed a total of 174 winners in Hong Kong. Chadwick has been based with Charlie Hills in Lambourn ahead of his appearance at the
Dubai Dury Free Shergar Cup and enjoyed his first winner in the UK on the Hills-trained Red Explorer at Ffos Las on July 24.

GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND TEAM
Kieren Fallon (Captain, Ireland)
Born on February 22, 1965, in County Clare, Ireland, Kieren Fallon joined Kevin Prendergast's yard as an apprentice in 1983.
Piccadilly Lord at Navan on June 18, 1984, was his first winner. He moved from Ireland to ride for Jimmy FitzGerald's Malton
stable from 1989 until 1991 and then spent three years with Lynda Ramsden's yard from 1993 until the end of 1996. At the start
of the 1997 Flat season, Fallon was a surprise appointment as stable jockey to the Henry Cecil yard and promptly won the
1000 Guineas on Sleepytime and Oaks on Reams Of Verse. He ceased riding for Cecil in August, 1999, and was first jockey to
Sir Michael Stoute in 2000 and 2001 after which he freelanced, still riding many of the Stoute team, before becoming retained
rider to owners Michael Tabor, Sue Magnier and Derrick Smith in 2005. The Stoute/Fallon combination won the 2000 Guineas
with King's Best in 2000 and Golan in 2001. Fallon was champion jockey in 1997 (202 wins), 1998 (204), 1999 (202), 2001
(166), 2002 (149) and in 2003 (221 wins), when his successes included Classics on Russian Rhythm in the 1000 Guineas and
Kris Kin in the Derby. He won three of the five British Classics in 1999 - the 1000 Guineas on Wince, the Oaks on Ramruma
and the Derby on Oath, his first success in the premier Classic. Although second to Frankie Dettori in the 2004 championship,
Fallon enjoyed another excellent season, including landing the Derby-Oaks double with North Light and Ouija Board. He made
a great start at Ballydoyle in 2005, winning both the 2000 and 1000 Guineas respectively with Footstepsinthesand and Virginia
Waters. He added his first Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe when landing the race on the Coolmore-owned and Andre Fabre-trained Hurricane Run in 2005, on
whom he had previously won the Irish Derby. He landed back-to-back wins in the 2000 Guineas when George Washington took the 2006 contest and
added that season's Oaks and Irish Oaks with Alexandrova. Out of the saddle, he has frequently made the headlines, in 2003 he was treated in a clinic
in Ireland after admitting to a drink problem. In September, 2004, he was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud related to alleged race fixing but
was released on bail and the prosecution case collapsed at the subsequent trial, with Fallon being found innocent on all charges. He had been
suspended from riding in Britain up to the end of the trial but was able to ride in Ireland and other jurisdictions. He collected a second Prix de l'Arc de
Triomphe win aboard Dylan Thomas in 2007, his last big race victory before being banned for 18 months after failing a drugs test organised by France
Galop, his second such offence. He received a six-month ban for the first drug offence in 2006/2007. He returned to action in September, 2009, and
landed the Grade One Goodwood Handicap at Santa Anita, USA, on Gitano Hernando. He saw off a legal attempt by Native Khan’s owner Ibrahim Araci
ahead of the 2011 Investec Derby, after he had agreed to ride Aidan O’Brien’s Recital, but the decision was overruled and an injunction on the day of
the race prevented him from riding either horse in the Classic. However, he soon tasted more Classic success when partnering Dancing Rain to victory
in the German Oaks in August, 2011, before steering Krypton Factor to a comfortable success in the Group One Dubai Golden Shaheen on Dubai
World Cup Night in March this year. He rode his first British Group One winner for six years on the Brian Meehan-trained Most Improved in the St
James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19, 2012.

Johnny Murtagh
Born in Co Meath, Ireland, on May 14, 1970, Johnny Murtagh, who is married to Orla and has five children, was apprenticed to
John Oxx and became Irish champion apprentice in 1989. He suffered drink problems early in his career but in 1995 became
Irish champion jockey (he was also champion in 1996, 1998 and 2009). He has since gained international prominence, winning
the 1995 Breeders' Cup Mile on Ridgewood Pearl and the following year's Beverly D Stakes on Timarida. He enjoyed a
phenomenal international season in 2000, winning 12 Group Ones in six different countries, partnering Sinndar to victory in
both the Investec Derby at Epsom Downs and Irish Derby and then the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, winning the Irish Oaks,
Yorkshire Oaks and Prix de l'Opera on Petrushka and the Champion Stakes and Breeders' Cup Turf on Kalanisi. He was the
most successful rider at Royal Ascot in 2001 with five wins, including the Gold Cup on Royal Rebel and St James's Palace
Stakes on Black Minnaloushe, aboard whom he also won the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He won the 2002 QIPCO 2000 Guineas for
Aidan O'Brien on Sir Alex Ferguson's Rock Of Gibraltar and landed a second Investec Derby on what again seemed the
O'Brien second string, High Chaparral, and landed a third renewal of that Classic with Motivator in 2005. In 2003 he won the
Irish Derby on Alamshar and took a break in the summer to sort out problems with his back and weight. He stepped down from
being stable jockey to John Oxx and had a short-lived spell as stable jockey to David Loder. Murtagh rode over hurdles in the 2005/06 season and came
close to riding a Cheltenham Festival winner when second on Golden Cross in the 2006 Ladbrokes World Hurdle. With Kieren Fallon out of action,
Murtagh was announced as the retained rider for Coolmore for 2008, but announced his departure from the operation at the end of 2010, and was
retained by His Highness The Aga Khan in Ireland, whose horses are mainly trained by John Oxx. Murtagh’s association with the O'Brien stable saw
him win a string of top races on stars such as Henrythenavigator, Duke Of Marmalade, Mastercraftsman, Fame And Glory, Rip Van Winkle, Dylan
Thomas, Peeping Fawn, Cape Blanco, Soldier Of Fortune and Yeats, who he was aboard for a record-breaking fourth success in the Gold Cup at Royal
Ascot in 2009. Last season yielded further success for Murtagh, with Dancing Rain winning the Investec Oaks, Jukebox Jury dead-heating in the Irish St
Leger and Lightening Pearl triumphing in the Cheveley Park Stakes. Dancing Rain and Deacon Blues formed a memorable double on British
Champions Day in the British Champions Fillies’ And Mares’ Stakes and the British Champions Sprint Stakes respectively.

James Doyle
Born in Cambridge on April 22, 1988, Doyle comes from a racing family. His mother Jacqui, who now acts as his agent,
formerly trained in Lambourn while his sister Sophie is a useful rider. He began riding out for his mother at the age of 10 and
had his first winner on Farnborough at Wolverhampton on June 1, 2005. He hit the headlines with a treble at Lingfield on
January 25, 2006. But after quickly riding out his claim, the 5ft 9in Doyle - one of the tallest jockeys in the weighing room - the
winners began to dry up and by 2010 he considered turning his back on racing and even enrolled on a plumbing course.
However, an upturn in the number of winners in 2011 caused Doyle to reconsider his decision and he never started the
plumbing course. Horse whisperer Gary Witherford recommended Doyle to trainer Roger Charlton and he became first jockey
to the Beckhampton handler this season. The partnership started 2012 on a high when Cityscape won the Group One Dubai
Duty Free at Meydan in March and enjoyed another big race success when Al Kazeem stormed to victory in the Group Two
Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket in May.

REMEMBERING SHERGAR
Shergar’s name is etched in racing folklore as much for his headline-grabbing demise as for his exceptional
performances on the racecourse, the most scintillating of those being his record-breaking victory in the 1981
Derby.
Famously kidnapped by the IRA following his retirement to stud, the Aga Khan’s colt was one of the finest
Derby winners of the 20th century and without argument the best racehorse of his generation with a lofty
Timeform rating of 140.
Trained by Michael Stoute in Newmarket, Shergar won impressively on his first start as a two-year-old before
finishing second to the more experienced Beldale Flutter on his only other outing in what is now the Racing
Post Trophy.
Having been rated 31st among his peers in the 1980 European Free Handicap, Shergar commenced his
Classic season as a 33/1 ante-post chance for the Derby. Those odds tumbled after a 10-length victory in
Sandown’s Classic Trial was followed by a 12-length demolition in the Chester Vase.
Shergar lined up at Epsom as the 10/11 favourite for Derby glory. He did not disappoint his supporters as he
once again accelerated away from inferior rivals to register a stunning 10-length success - the widest winning
margin in the long history of the premier Classic.
With the Epsom Classic in the bag, Shergar went to the Curragh and added the Irish Derby by four lengths
before routing his elders by the same distance in Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance contest, the King
George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.
The stage was set for an autumn hurrah in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp but in an unexpected
twist, connections decided to take in the St Leger at Doncaster. The extended mile and three quarters of the
world’s oldest Classic proved beyond Shergar’s stamina reserves and he could fare no better than fourth.
That defeat was to be Shergar’s final race. Valued at £10 million, the colt retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany
Stud in Ireland but on February 8, 1983, hooded gunmen seized the stallion. A £2-million ransom was
demanded and refused. Shergar’s fate remains a mystery.

SPONSORSHIP SUCCESS AS SALES SOAR
Dubai Duty Free’s support for the the world’s premer international jockeys’ competition extends back to the inception of
the Shergar Cup. As the event has continued to grow in stature as both a sporting and social event so too has the multiaward winning airport retailer’s involvement, as a team sponsor, a race sponsor and, since 2006, title sponsor.
Sports sponsorship, and horse racing in particular, has been an integral part of Dubai Duty Free's marketing mix since the
formation of the company in 1983.
It has been successful in the promotion of Dubai as a centre of excellence for business and leisure activities and helped
to establish Dubai Duty Free as a globally renowned airport retailer.
Dubai Duty Free currently operates some 18,000 square metres of retail space in Dubai International Airport, staffed by
more than 4,200 dedicated employees and to date has received some 250 awards which bear testament to the
company’s success including ‘Brand of the Year’ award received from the Superbrands Council UAE, the Arabian
Business Achievement Awards for ‘Retail Company of the Year’, the Global Traveller US magazinne Award for ‘Best Duty
Free Shop’, the Business Traveller Middle East Awards for ‘ Best Airport for Duty Free Shopping’, the Sheikh Mohammed
bin Rashid Al Maktoum Paton of Arts for ‘Maktoum Patron of the Arts Awards’ and the DFNI Awards for ‘Middle East
Travel Retailer of the Year’.
First quarter sales figures this year topped US$390 million, an increase of 14% over the same period last year, and
means that the organisation is well on the way to achieving its sales forecast of US$1.64 billion.
Commenting on the sales figures, Colm McLoughlin, Dubai Duty Free's Executive Vice Chairman, said, “We've enjoyed
an excellent start to the year and are on track to meet our target.
“Terminal 3 continues to be our biggest outlet in terms of accumulated sales, accounting for almost 58% of our total
turnover. Surprisingly, though, the average spend of passengers in Terminal 1 is higher, accounting for 35% of sales.
“The continued growth of Flydubai has provided us with an opportunity to boost sales in Terminal 2, which accounts for
over 7% of our sales, and is growing.”
The company broke new ground this year with the official opening last month of the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel in Dubai. A
five star, 293 bedroom property, it is owned by Dubai Duty Free and managed by Jumeirah, a world leader in luxury
hospitality.
Dubai Duty Free's horse racing sponsorship portfolio kicks off with support for the Group 1 US$5 million Dubai Duty Free
on Dubai World Cup night in the emirate in March.
The following month sees the running of the Dubai Duty Free 'Spring Trials' meeting at Newbury, a fixture which has been
