Climate Change: Can we keep from reaching the 2 °point?
By: Paul Holley
The UN Paris Climate
Conference is well underway, with nations
negotiating and activists
and on-lookers alike
keeping close tabs on
the happenings. One
point brought to the
world in recent years
and mentioned broadly
at the Paris conference
was the agreement to
keep global temperatures from rising 2° C since pre-industrial times, an agreement
reached at the fruitless Copenhagen Climate Conference in 2009. It has been largely
agreed upon in the scientific community that this temperature is the limit to where
we, as humans, would not experience the greatest wraths of climate change. Wraths
such as unprecedented droughts, wildfires, famines, flooding due to sea level rise – as
much as 2 m above present sea level before century’s end- and heat waves. By century’s end, if no action is taken, we could be heading for 4° C. In This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein, she quotes a statement by Kevin Andersen, Deputy Director of
the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, saying that 4° C is “incompatible
with any reasonable characterization of an organized, equitable and civilized global
community.” So some ask the question, will we shy away from burning fossil fuels in
time to keep temperatures below 2° C? Some factors come into play: a legally binding
agreement in Paris, countries making swift and increased investments into renewables as well as a wave of inspiration and activism to fall upon upcoming generations.
But one aspect is vital, optimism and hope among us all, as well as acceptance of our
individual impacts on the changing climate.
Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has stated in Paris
that Canada wants temperatures kept below 1.5° C and that Canada wants a legally
binding agreement to make sure rich, polluting nations keep below emissions targets.
This ambitious, optimistic approach by a country that has been trailing on the environmental front for a decade shows that it is possible for big polluters to become
leaders both verbally and, hopefully, by example. Agreements have been sparse thus
far in the negotiations, but one thing holds strong; that the vast majority of the 180

Saint Nicholas' Day, observed on
December 6th (in Western Christian countries) and December
19th (in Eastern Christian countries), is the feast day of Saint
Nicholas. It is celebrated as a
Christian festival with particular
regard to his reputation as a
bringer of gifts, as well as through
the attendance of Mass or worship services. The American Santa
Claus, as well as the British Father
Christmas, derive from Saint Nicholas. "Santa Claus" is itself derived
in part from the Dutch Sinterklaas, the saint's name in that
language. However the gift giving
associated with these descendant
figures is associated with Christmas Day rather than Saint Nicholas Day itself.

Music Artist Review - Michael Bublé
By: Veronica Oliver
On September 9 th, 1975, the world was officially blessed with the equally talented and annoying Michael
Buble. I, personally, am surprised that he wasn’t born on Christmas Day considering that he only seems
to come out of his cave on December 1 stand slyly crawls back in on December 31 st. I mean, his music is
good for the first four times you hear it on the radio, but on the fifth and hundredth time, you want to
stop the car, rip out the radio, and burn it; your merciless eyes watering at the mere fact that you are
free. Even though many people don’t like his music, when Christmas rolls around, its hard not to like it. It
becomes so bad that you may as well see his face taped on the porcelain Jesus in the manager in the Nativity Scene at your grandmother’s house. For those of you who have done science classes, or more like
for those of you who have paid attention during science classes, you should know that we, as humans,
are technically all animals. For Michael Buble however, he is a true human-animal mix. Just get this: he
hides out all year, but comes out at Christmas time. What does that remind you of? Hibernation. Michael
Buble hibernates all year until he sees one piece of snow and when he does, he jumps out of his cave on
Mount Everest, runs (more like rides his reindeer) all the way to his music studio in America, and sings
away his summer blues until it is time for him to go back to sleep. The poor thing. It’s okay Michael, there
will be Christmas every year. Good songs come to those who wait.
