January 8, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians, A nice start to the new year this week. Students were getting back in the groove of all the routines of a school day! Here are some highlights: Monday: Welcome back! We had our monthly Community Assembly. Congratulations to Megan for being voted Citizen of the Month for December. We worked in our printing books on the letters “j” and “k”. In Writer’s Workshop we learned about how authors can make lists in their writing. We practiced writing with some lists. Students enjoyed writing about their Christmas presents. In Math we learned our addition doubles facts and made some rhymes up to help us remember. In Science we demonstrated the process of evaporation when we boiled water for a while. Students were intrigued to see the water level had decreased and observed how liquid changed into a gas state. Tuesday: We practiced our word building skills and phonics during Making Words. In Sort and Transfer we worked on the word families of “oi” and “tion”. We learned about compound words and identified some in our books during Daily 5. We practiced our doubles facts during Math. We observed how water (liquid) changed into an ice cube (solid) and back into water (liquid) again. In PE we began our basketball skills unit. Wednesday: Students participated in Daily Physical Activity class first thing to get their body and minds ready. We worked on building compound words during Language Arts. During Writer’s Workshop we learned about New Year’s Resolutions and made a list of some of our own for 2016. We reviewed the 3 states of matter in Science with some poems. We had our library book exchange. In Math we used our doubles facts knowledge to help us solve addition equations. Thursday: We read a book called Flip and Flop and students were modelled with how readers can have connections with their texts. In Math, we continued our doubles facts practice with a Doubles Dice Challenge. We also began learning about the strategy of front end (break apart) addition. Students got familiarized with adding tens and ones with the use of base ten blocks. Students worked on their stamina during Daily 5 centres. In Science, students observed the process of condensation. Students learned that water vapor (gas) can be turned back into water (liquid) form. We reviewed many science terms from our unit prior to writing an Exploring Liquids quiz. In combined PE with 2S we learned how to dribble and perform bounce passes. Friday: We had our Spelling Check Up first thing and we went over the words so students could see what to improve on. During Writer’s Workshop we generated a list of ideas to write lists about. Students chose their own topic and practiced writing with lists in their home journals. In Math we continued practiced with adding two 2-digit numbers using base ten blocks. Students CASHED IN their black belt tickets. In combined PE with 2G we continued developing our dribbling skills and practiced bounce passes and chest passes. In Art we began our Catching Snowflakes piece using the medium of oil pastels. Things to know: Please remember to return library books back to school on time. Our library day is Wednesday each week. We prefer books to be returned by Tuesday each week. Bills will be issued home for books that are damaged or haven’t been returned after some time. Upcoming week: On Monday we have a Motivational Magic assembly on bucket filling at 10:30AM. Dental forms are due. On Tuesday Pink Shirt orders are due. On Wednesday Scholastic Book Orders for January are due. Hot Lunch (Edo) forms are also due. On Thursday we have our inaugural Hear Us Roar, Hear Us Read event starting at 6:30PM.
