Star-Spangled Banner
(The Defense of Fort McHenry)
September 20, 1814
Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Lyrics by: Francis Scott Key
Hawai‘i Pono‘i
Hawai‘i pono‘ï,
Nänä i kou mö‘ï,

People of Hawai‘i,
Look to your king,
The royal chief,
The chief.
Royal father,
Kamehameha,
We shall defend
With spears.

People of Hawai‘i,
Look to your chiefs,
The children after you,
The young.
People of Hawai‘i,
O nation,
Your great duty
Strive.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Dawn Amano-Ige
Dawn Amano-Ige became the first lady of Hawai‘i when her
husband, Governor David Ige, was sworn in as the 8th governor
of the State of Hawai‘i on December 1, 2014.
Mrs. Ige was born in Ewa, Hawai‘i. She received her bachelor’s
degree in journalism from the University of Hawai‘i, where she
met her husband. She also earned a master’s degree in business
from Chaminade University in Honolulu.
She began her career as an account executive in a public
relations agency and later joined a local medical center where
she served as the director of marketing. As a mother of three
children, she chose to return to school for a professional diploma
in elementary education. She started her career as a teacher in
1997 and is now a vice principal of an elementary school.
Throughout her life and professional career, the first lady has
dedicated herself to community and public service through
education and health care. The Iges’ three children, Lauren,
Amy, and Matthew, are currently attending college.
About our Valedictory Speakers
Valedictory speakers at Hawai‘i Pacific University are selected on the basis of grade point average and service to the community.
Zachary Drury, BS Nursing
Zachary Drury pursued the profession of nursing following a
life-changing experience. Years ago in Utah, he was with a group
of friends exploring a canyon. They became stuck due to an
ice buildup. He stayed with two friends, who were in the early
stages of hypothermia. For eight hours in the canyon, he took
care of his friends before search and rescue crews found them.
That experience inspired him to go to nursing school.
was awarded the 2015 Isabel Hampton Robb Leadership Award
at the National Student Nurses’ Association annual convention in
Phoenix.
Drury also serves as president of the Hawai‘i Student Nurses’
Association, with students from schools throughout the state. He
Drury will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
He has been a YWCA fitness instructor in Honolulu. In the U.S.
Navy, he was a Command Fitness Leader, in addition to being a
musician.
Mojgan Busick, BS Diplomacy and Military Studies
Mojgan Busick was born in Iran and grew up during the
Iran-Iraq war. During the conflict, her family suffered many
hardships, including her father and brother serving in the
military. That experience helped her realize how precious life
and family were to her.
She has been married for 24 years to a U.S. Air Force airman.
She said raising a child and enduring her husband’s many
deployments may have kept her from being a full-time student,
but did not stop her love of learning. She successfully balanced
family and community volunteer activities with her studies. At
HPU, she was a member of the Hawai‘i Beta Chapter of Alpha
Chi National Honor Society.
As a military spouse, Busick has travelled to many countries,
learning about their cultures. She knows Farsi, English and
Italian languages. Her daughter will also be graduating from high
school in May 2015.
Busick will receive a Bachelor of Science in Diplomacy &
Military Studies.
Mark Brians, MA Communication
Mark Brians is the oldest of four boys born to parents Mark Sr.
and Jennifer, a missionary couple working in the former Soviet
Union. His earliest memories include seeing Hungary during its
reconstruction in the 1990s.
He moved to Hawai‘i with his family during his freshman year
of high school and graduated as a valedictorian from Kaiser High
in 2008. Brians received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication
from HPU in 2012, with a minor in writing.
As he pursued his graduate degree, Brians became an active part
of the HPU Debate Society, Kalamalama student newspaper and
the Christian Student Organization.
His major academic interests are found at the intersection
of theology, language, rhetoric and the body. He also enjoys
literature, cooking, gardening and folk music.
In April, he and his wife Rachel welcomed their first child,
daughter Tirzah.
Brians will receive a Master of Arts in Communication.

Aloha ‘Oe
We leave you tonight with one of the most famous Hawaiian songs, Aloha ‘Oe, a song of love and farewell. This song is
dedicated to all of our graduates who will become our ambassadors of aloha around the world.
Hawaiian Ensemble and Vocal Ensemble
Ha‘aheo e ka ua i nä pali
Ke nihi a‘ela i ka nahele
E hahai (uhai) ana paha i ka liko
Pua ‘ähihi lehua o uka
Aloha ‘oe, aloha ‘oe
E ke onaona noho i ka lipo
One fond embrace,
A ho‘i a‘e au
Until we meet again
Proudly swept the rain by the cliffs
As it glided through the trees
Still following ever the bud
The ‘ähihi lehua of the vale
Aloha ‘oe, aloha ‘oe
E ke onaona noho i ka lipo
One fond embrace,
A ho‘i a‘e au
Until we meet again

ALOHA FELLOW GRADUATE,
During your Hawai‘i Pacific University journey, you have made
friends with people from around the world, learned both in and
outside of the classroom, and now you have finally reached that
milestone which makes all of those late night cramming sessions
worth it. Congratulations on your graduation!
Each year, members of the graduating class commemorate their
HPU experience and show their pride through the Senior Class Gift.
As the President of HPU’s recently formed Student Philanthropy
Council (SPC), I would like to invite you to celebrate this momentous
occasion by supporting the 2015 Senior Class Gift.
This March, we led the Student Team for HPU’s first-ever bracketed
giving competition: HPU Madness. SPC represented our student
body by papering campuses with “price” tags detailing how gifts
support our success and staffed the #HPUMadness photo booth
at the pre-show for Da Freakshow. To encourage us to take on
the Alumni, Parent, and Faculty and Staff teams, I pledged to
personally match each council member’s gift – and we stepped up
to the challenge.
As a fellow Shark, it is now my turn to cross the Blaisdell stage, join
the 40,000+ HPU alumni ‘ohana and support our alma mater. Join
me, and help increase the value of our degrees by giving back!
Aloha,
Avery Fukeda (BSBA ’15)
Student Philanthropy Council, President
P.S. Support student success, leave your mark on campus and help
support the next generation of students.
