Congratulations to everyone (players, coaches, scorers, officials, sponsors, Patrons,
parents, Old Boys and supporters) on winning the Club Championship for 2016-17.
What a weekend! …
One of the best in the Club’s history … 5 wins, 2 with bonus points. We sat at MTO, we paced up and
down and we waited on various results. We cheered every ball that 5 th grade scored in the last hour of
st
play. And we cheered every dot ball in 1 grade. The stars aligned, Austie Hughes weaved a little
magic upstairs (see back page) … and we got there!
It was an #ALLIN effort!
As much as we record such conquests in newsletters and annual reports, the history of the club and
its strong culture lies not just in printed words. The history lies in people’s memories … great
memories. You guys created another piece of history last Saturday from a tough position. A piece that
will remain in your minds forever, and we still have some more celebrating to do!
Club Captain, Clayton Waters .. Rest the tonsils and get ready for another 6 Club Songs. For those
who were there on Saturday night in the sheds and saw Peter Lindbecks rendition … “Her 2 glass
eyes … her straggly hair … her jagged teeth!” … It’s difficult to remove that from the memory bank!
It was a 3am finish at Mark Taylor Oval.
In the meantime we have 4 quarter finals to win this weekend

ROUND 15 vs Campbelltown - 5 from 5!!
1st Grade won:
The last game of a rollercoaster season for the 1st Grade Team presented itself with an opportunity
for the team to finish off on a high note together as well as gaining vital points to go toward Club
Champions. With our opposition in a position with nothing to lose and everything to gain, the task was
never going to be easy. Our Captain returned from his stint in the PSL and slotted straight back into
winning the toss and batting first. Yes you heard correctly we batted first! Something a lot of onlookers
have been wanting us to do all season….. but that’s for another time.
A slight order reshuffle saw Kimbo and Henry start proceedings for the Rangers, however when the
score reached 20 we lost Hen and then Flaz in consecutive balls. Kimbo and Greeny then rebuilt
nicely and it was great to see Kimbo continue to trust his game and take it to the bowlers during the
power play. Unfortunately he fell 8 runs short of his 50 and Greeny followed him shortly after with 23
to his name. This brought to the crease our best player for the season in one A.G. Harriott and the
strutsman himself L.J. Ford. The pair complemented each other well with Buddy despatching the
opposition bowlers to all parts and Fordy feeding him the strike at every chance he could (sometimes
even without choice ;) ). They were just 5 runs short of the 100 partnership and really took us into a
commanding position to help win the cricket game. Buddy fell victim an unfortunate error of judgement
from the umpire on 91 off 97 balls, which included 3 fours and 7 sixes, and only 9 runs short of
equaling the ND’s record for most centuries in a season. Nevertheless it has been a fantastic year for
him and he thoroughly deserves all the success and accolades that come and have come his way.
Brainsy and the bowlers wagged their tails to get the score to 222 all out in the 48th. Probably left
ourselves 30-50 runs short of our best work but a great total going into the 2nd half of the game.
Taylor and debutant George Furrer took the new ball for the trees as the opposition came hard at us
in the power play. George had to wait a little longer for his debut than we all would have liked due to
wet weather, but the ‘big fella’ certainly looked right at home with the new ball in his hand charging in
for the Rangers. Taylor and Fordy got the first breakthroughs with the score at 52 and 73 respectively
as we aimed to increase the pressure on the opposition by slowing down their run rate. Felts came on
immediately after the power play and bowled with exceptional control to bowl 10 overs straight for
only 25. It has been really great to see his cricket come on this year as I hope he has shown himself
that 1st Grade is where he belongs and where he can be most successful taking his game forward.
The bowlers were rotated through the middle as wickets fell at reasonably regular intervals but the
required run rate was spot on target. At the final drinks break, 15 overs were left in our season and we
were asked to put in for our team, our mates and our club and show why we deserve to continue to be
held as a force to be reckoned with in Sydney Grade Cricket. Taylor bowled with great threat for his 7
overs 2/37, as he has done all year, as we were all so pleased for him to get through his first full
season in a long time, the hard work has certainly paid off. Fordy, Brains and Greeny closed out our
innings in superb style and in the end didn't allow the opposition to even come close to reaching our
total. Fordy finished with figures of 2/39 off 9 in a superb all round performance, whilst the skipper
closed with 3/34 from his 10 to finish up his campaign with the ball.
How sweet it was to hear the words ‘I wanna be an ND Ranger’ bellowing out of a 1st Grade change
room again, and more importantly every ND’s change room on Saturday right up until the early hours
of Sunday morning!!!
It has been a tough back end of the season when you take our results at face value and we always
aim to play our best cricket for our teammates and our club. With the high expectations we all set it
was disappointing not to be playing finals cricket with the rest of the club over the next few weeks,
especially considering our strong position at Christmas, however when you take a step away we have
achieved a considerable amount both as a team and as a club this season, and for that I hope
everyone can walk away with their heads held up high reminiscing on the fun we had as a group
throughout the year.
Special thanks must go to our two greatest supporters in Noel Moig and Robyn Sanday, their
collective efforts make our jobs on the field so much easier and a lot more enjoyable. We owe a lot of
gratitude to them as they continue to give up their weekends for us week in week out when they could
be spending time with their families. Good luck to the rest of the grades in their finals campaigns, we
throw our full support behind you! Enjoy the experience and have a lot of fun out there! Greeny.

2nd Grade won: The Rangers returned to MTO with the unfamiliar site of blue sky and no rain which
was more than appreciated! Claytos flipped the coin and Ghosties sent us in to bat on a deck which
we knew would ‘do a bit early but flatten out throughout the day’ (Cricketer, The Grade, 1925-2017).
The lads started off well showing some true grit and grinding out not losing a wicket until 56 runs were
added to the score. We had a mini lapse in concentration and lost 2 wickets quicker than we wanted
but through the help of JA, Fossil and SMac we were able to build a decent score with some late
innings hitting and running. 177 on the board on a tricky deck we thought would be tough but enough
considering our bowling attack.
Our bowling was fantastic from ball 1 with Pawso tearing up the top order followed by Fossil and then
Eggs and Webbs coming on and doing the damage. Bills took a vital wicket and bowled tight to
frustrate their batsmen. Wickets were shared between all (2 fas all round and 1 fa for Bills). The key
moment was the run out by JA of their key batsmen who was throwing the willow around. This swung
the game into a unlosable position. The boy’s fielding was good throughout building pressure and
taking key catches. Always plenty to work on. With this win we secured a home QF which is huge and
also setup a potential club championship win!
3rd Grade Rd 15 v Campbelltown Camden
NDCC 8/262 def Campbelltown 53 with 1 bonus point
Another wet week but at least with late sun and a good weekend forecast 3’s had the chance to get
some cricket in and push for a top 6 spot in the last round of the season. A win against the Ghosts
would guarantee us a top 6 spot, a bonus point would give us a small chance at a home final and a
loss could see us miss out altogether. Of course there were valuable club championship points on
offer too!
Making it 7 in a row, MJ lost another toss and saw us sent in on a wicket that was a fraction tacky. We
batted really well right from the top and although Campbelltown tightened things up in the middle with
some good bowling, we kept our heads and worked our way back into the innings. With 15 overs to
go we felt 260 was our minimum and so we were happy to finish with 262 off the 50 overs. All of the
bats contributed but top scores were Mansi (68), Hayward (53) with Fisher (31), Quinliven (30), Hing
and Peebles all chipping in throughout. With the wicket playing a bit slow and tennis ball type bounce,
we were confident that we had a score and could maybe push for a bonus point.
The next 70 minutes of play were pretty scary. Basically everything went right for us. Campbelltown
went from 0/4 and looking solid to 4/5 in the space of 7 balls. Melville and Heinrich both bowling the
house down with Melly taking 3 wickets in an over at one point. Catches were taken, balls hit the
wickets and LBW’s were given. Whilst Campbelltown consolidated at one stage we managed to finish
the game off quickly with Bondy (still looking hungover from the AOC country tour!) taking 3-6 at the
end to knock the Ghosts over for 53 off 19.2 overs.
The rest of the afternoon was spent watching some great cricket from 1’s an 5’s with both teams
getting important wins and providing some outstanding entertainment for the 3’s lads. As results
filtered in from across Sydney, it started to look like the treasured Club Championship was coming
back to MTO with us and to top everything else off, results had gone our way and 3rd grade had snuck
into 3rd spot for a home quarter final next weekend v Mosman. The Whales in the QF will be tough
and they knocked us off earlier in the season so we will have to be at our best to get the chocolates.
Well done to everyone from Greenies to 1’s on the Club Championship. It’s a true group effort in
every sense and a great achievement for us as a club.
Good luck to all teams in the finals next week – let’s grab some more silverware before the season is
finished!
4th Grade won with a bonus point. Andrew Newton and Jack Murphy bowled the house down!
5th Grade won. Well done boys. Special mention to Chad and Paddy Murton who batted us over the
line.

Game 10 - Northern Districts Blue vs Parramatta – 26 February 2017
We played round 10 of the limited overs competition at Merrylands Oval on Sunday.
After an hour delay letting the pitch dry we won the toss and bowled. Jasmine and Julia opened and
Julia bowled well with 2 for 4 off 4. Izzy had great stats of 2 for 8 off 7 and Annabel, Niamh and
Rhiannon also bowled with one wicket each. Our fielding was good with 3 run outs and 4 catches,
Parramatta were bowled out for 90.
We struggled batting against the opening bowlers and were bowled out for 65. Izzy batted well with
12 runs and so did Julia with 10. The girls put in a good effort and were unlucky not to win. Everyone
now gets a weekend off for the Bye before the local derby v NDs Gold. – Jasmine
Game 12 – Northern District Blue v Northern District Gold – 12 March 2017
Round 12 was the long awaited local derby between our 2 Brewer sides at Asquith. Owing to the
February rains abandoned games meant the winner would advance to the Semis.
Shivani won the toss and elected to bat. The Brewer Blue team struggled to get any partnerships
going with the exception of Shivani (24) and Clare Webber (15) being in a 36 run partnership and a
handy 15 from Jacinta Crawford and some excellent spin bowling from Abbey Taylor (4-8) and Jordy
Anderson (3-19) and 3 stumpings from Brewer Gold keeper Sarah resulted in a total of 9-106 in the
40th over.
The Brewer Gold chase went well with an opening stand of 63 from Alisha Bates (40) and Millie Kohl
(19) the Brewer Gold players looked on their way. Sarah chipped in with a well deserved 27 runs and
despite some tight bowling from Izzy, Julia, Shivani and Jessica and 4 run outs Brewer Gold got to the
total with 7 overs to spare.
Brewer Blue ended the season in 6 th however good luck to Brewer Gold in their semi v Campbelltown
Camden at Raby on 19 March !!!
HARPO’S VAULT – CLUB CHAMPS
At the beginning of the last grade round, we needed to be successful in 5 out of 5
games to have a chance of winning the Club Championship and then pick up some
bonus points as well. It was certainly not impossible, but it was more likely
improbable. Anyway, it happened and the Club Championship was ours! Herself
and I were up at MTO last Saturday when Drifter announced the result as the points
were phoned through from the NSWCA. The cheers from the 50 or so players there
filled the air and the singing of the club song could be heard from Pymble to Berowra. It was a
spontaneous reaction of club spirit.
My thoughts went back to when my family first moved to Wahroonga in 1947-48 and I became a very
young member of ND’s. This was the season that the 1 st Grade won our first ever premiership. The
team included some very fine cricketers. First class players such as Hughie Chilvers (a State leggie
in the wrong era, up against Grimmett and O’Reilly), Caldwell a good first class player plus such fine
club cricketers as Mathers, Stubley and Kershaw. And let us not forget one of the greatest allrounders in the history of the world: a bloke by the name of Alan Davidson. How proud those great
clubmen would be now. However, our club didn’t win a Club Championship until the 60’s. Since then
(counting 2017) we have won 5.
As somebody described the last round, “It was the most nail-biting Saturday in the 92 years of our
history.” Surprisingly at some stages on Saturday 4 of the 5 teams looked as if they were done – only
the 3’s seemed to always have it in control. Yet with determination and pride in the club, each player
did their bit and when many captains would have panicked our skippers kept a steady hand and head
and piloted their boys down a rough and stormy coastline into the Harbour of Victory.
There have been so many who contributed to this result and I can’t congratulate all. Nevertheless I’ll
feel remiss if I don’t mention just a few: Drifter, Gozza, the Committee, Jack, Robyn and our
enthusiastic and hardworking curator, Billy (1st year). (However, spare a thought for our previous
curator, Pete, who has been trying to achieve this since 1999). Now let’s win 4 grade comps!
HARTLEY ANDERSON’S FLASHBACKS
The Edgar Britt Cricket Club
The recent death of the champion Australian jockey Edgar Britt a week at the age of 103 brought up a
cricket story that is worth placing on the record, even if it's not an ND's story.
Edgar Britt rode his first winner in Sydney in 1930, raced in the USA in 1933, rode Broad Arrow to
victory in the 1934 Sydney Cup and was fourth to Peter Pan on the same horse in the Melbourne
Cup. He rode track work in Sydney against the Great Phar Lap. He went to ride for the Indian
Maharajahs in the late 1930s and 1940s and was among the immense wealth those people had.
After WWII he went to ride for the rich and famous in England, including George vI, and was together
with Sir Gordon Richards, one of the leading jockeys. He was very much involved in the golden days
of the sport of kings.
It's hard to know these days whether everyone is conversant with Cockney rhyming slang?
Pass me the Bob Hope (Soap)
You're wanted on the Eau de cologne (Phone) I feel like a German Spy (Meat Pie)...and so on.
One of the most used rhyming slang was "I'm just going for an Edgar, or Edgar Britt".
In the 1950' and 1960’s there was no organised cricket on Sundays. In Test Matches there was a rest
day, similarly in Sheffield Shield Cricket. There was no grade cricket either so players were able to
play some social matches or go to the beach.
This was certainly the case in Adelaide, city of churches.
A group of leading South Australian players formed a social team in 1957 known as the Edgar Britt
Cricket Club.
Les Favell, Barry Jarman, Malcolm 'Hooky'Hodge, Brian 'Bunga' Hourn and others played when they
had a free Sunday. Racing people jockey Billy Pyers and trainer Colin Hayes played, as well as Peter
Trethewey a former opening bowler for SA.
Edgar had formally agreed to be the Patron, and there were also a number of Vice Patrons, namely
Mssrs Sweetacres, Graeme Hole, (Cricketer), Lorraine Crapp (swimmer), Doris Hart (tennis), and
Darlene Hard (tennis).
The Edgar Britts also had their own flag, with the colours being the green and gold of Australia, and
chocolate brown.
There was an enormous amount of fervour as they sang the song in the dressing room after the
match.
The words of the song went;
Be An Edgar, That's the Answer
Be An Edgar, All the Time, and so on
Edgar had given permission to use his name, but was less than happy when sometime later he found
out the context in which it was being used.
It's a long time ago and many of the perpetrators are like Edgar, no longer with us. Yet for some, his
name lives on with arguably the most famous piece of rhyming slang.

Dear Mr Longbow,

Dear Sir,
Is there no limit to the depths that you will sink! Just because one of your members is not happy with
the Australian selectors choices. The suggestion of, “putting Humphrey B Bear in could not be any
worse” is an extremely Defamatory statement !
I actually know Humphrey B. Bear, I actually worked alongside Humphrey on a number of occasions
in the early eighties. This is a fact.
Whilst Humphrey was not known to the general cricket public as was his well-known late uncle
Donald, Humphrey was also known as a willow wielding Warrior to a select few.
You are obviously now aware the B in Humphrey B. Bear is for Bradman
I look forward to your humble apology in your next Blackmail
