Subject Title
Advanced Apparel Techniques and Practice
Credit Value
3 credits
Level

Pre-requisite
ITC2006T Apparel Technology
Objectives
This subjects aims to enable students to elevate their basic sewing skills and
apparel making-up techniques to an advanced level. The subjects helps
strengthen students knowledge on the making-up sequences of apparel
products, as well as the correct use of machinery and equipment that students
are able to create a prototype using professional sewing methods and
application techniques.
Intended Learning
Outcomes
Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to:
e. compare various making-up techniques with the characteristics of the
apparel products;
f. integrate and apply suitable sewing and assembly methods, and
adequate equipment for making-up apparel products of different
quality;
g. derive and formulate professional sewing and assembling methods to
design and develop prototypes which are aesthetical, functional and
relevant to their chosen market
Subject Synopsis/
Indicative Syllabus
(I)
Techniques of making-up apparel products
Various making-up techniques and practices on the machinery, work aids,
sewing sequences and handling skills of various types of apparel products
and requirements. Correct choice of seam type, stitch type, edgefinishing, fastening system, openings, etc. in relation to different fabric
properties (sheer, stretchable, fake fur, etc.), aesthetic (special and
decorative sewing effects) and functional requirements, as well as enduses.
(II)
Design and Sewing Specifications
Working drawings, requirements and specifications in relation to design
features and/or specific requirements of apparel products.
Inclusions of pictures and sketches of the stitches and seams to ensure the
accuracy of the assembly with the ASTM or ISO stitch standards.
(III) Sample development
Design and make up outfit by using the techniques above
Identify and analyse possible assembling problems, suggest feasible
solutions and formulate quality checklist

industries, we could provide students with ideal entry-level skills and
knowledge for the professions, reflected not only in a portfolio of well crafted
work, whilst preparing them for emerging non-traditional (merchandising
design) roles and niches.
Teaching/Learning
Methodology
Lectures and studio are designed to deliver theories, concepts and facts of the
subjects and to provide guidance on further readings and applications.
Workshops will be used to supplement formal lectures with more interactive
teaching and learning, and problem solving. Demonstration on making up
techniques and manufacturing problems will also be conducted in workshop to
supplement the lectures. Hands-on practice on sewing techniques will be
provided to students in workshop to enhance the application of apparel
making-up techniques.
A variety of assessment tools will be used, including in-class exercises,
individual design projects and group projects to develop students’ critical
thinking, analytical skills, teamwork, and communication skills.

Student Study
Effort Expected
In the coursework, students will be assessed through practical assignment
based on their workshop practice of sewing and/or making-up techniques and
formulation of design and sewing specifications. Individual design projects
and group projects based on using state-of-arts equipment for manufacturing a
selected apparel product.
