MUSICAL SYNOPSIS
In our story, a convict, Jean Valjean, has an opportunity for redemption due to the
compassion and generosity of a man of mercy: the bishop. As a result of this chance
encounter, Valjean decides to abandon his old identity and start a new life in a new
town. There, he becomes a respected factory owner, the mayor, and a solid pillar of the
community. No matter how hard he tries, however, his past, and the police officer who
has searched for him tirelessly, will not fade away into the dusk. As Valjean flees from his
past and Inspector Javert, he makes a promise to protect the child, Cosette, of a dying
woman named Fantine. Valjean then devotes his life to protecting this child and giving
her the life her mother deserved. On his journey to redemption, Valjean along with
Cosette are drawn into the world of 1832 Paris. There, a young group of students and
rebels fight to protect the poor and the workers of Paris and create a new era, an era of
justice and freedom. As we watch the rebellion rise and eventually fall, we are moved by
the dreams and aspirations of young men as well as the tragedy that strikes when their
hopes are built on nothing more than a dream.

D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S
I can still remember the night that I had the privilege of watching Les Miserables for the
first time. I was studying abroad in London. It was a rainy night—of course it was. I
purchased students tickets, found my obstructed view seat on the orchestra floor and
waited for the show to begin. From the moment the music started, I was transported to
another world. Here was a world of glaring injustice, a world where the poor were left to
fend for themselves, a world where the lowly were at the mercy of the strong; but even in
this world, I found moments to laugh, moments to cheer for the efforts of the brave and
just, and moments to hope. I was so deeply moved during this performance, even with my
terrible seat, that I wanted to see the show again and again. I have been fortunate enough
to see the show several times since that fateful London evening, but one of the most
memorable times was when I returned to my own high school to see their production, Les
Miserables. I was blown away. I couldn’t believe that a high school, that my high school,
could honor the story of Les Miserables in such a powerful way. It was on that day that
I started looking for the perfect group of students to bring this incredible show, this
powerful story, this moving experience to Whitefish Bay High School.
At this time, I would like to take a moment to recognize the incredible students who made
this dream a reality. First, I humbly thank the crew for the time, effort, passion, and talent
they’ve given to this production. Without their efforts, we would all be sitting in the dark,
our actors naked with no props to use or set pieces present to create the world of 19th
century France. Next, I would like to thank the pit for the countless hours spent producing
such incredible music. I know that when the curtain rises you start and do not stop until
intermission. Then you repeat this process for act two—thank you for those tireless efforts!
Finally, I want to thank the actors for the many hours they have put into creating such a
powerful, moving show, the energy they provided night after night to commit to these
complex characters and bring their story to life, and most importantly the kindness and
humor that made this entire experience amazing. A special note to seniors from cast, crew,
and pit: I cannot express how much I will miss all of you when you graduate because of
the incredible talent you’ve selflessly given to our theatre family throughout your time
here. Your hard work, dedication, and love of the theatre inspire us all. Thank you… Thank
you… Thank you!!!
People oftentimes use the phrase “it takes a village.” This has never been truer for Whitefish
Bay than it has been with this production. At the end of last year’s musical, I realized that
Whitefish Bay High School was finally ready to take on Les Miserables. Once I realized we
were ready, we got to work finding a team willing to put in far too many hours, far too
much of their passion, and far too much commitment to bring this production to life.
Because of this, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to my colleagues for their
incredible contributions to this production. We could have never put on this show without
the amazing technical, vocal, pit, and dance gurus who shared so much of their time, talent
and passion with us all… I feel humbled and honored to work with each of you. I cannot
imagine this show without you and your extraordinary contributions.
I also want to thank the parents who have given so much of their time to support the
success of this show. As a parent of a 2 ½ year old, I am in awe of each of you who stand
as inspiring models of what selfless love, creativity, and hard work can produce. Finally,
I would like to thank my husband, my son, and my family for their love and support
throughout this musical process and each theatrical endeavor I embrace mind, body, and
soul!
Now, please, sit back, relax, and get ready to be moved as we travel back to 19th century
France with Les Miserables.

CURRICUL AR CONNECTION
Two of our senior cast members, Emma Buzecky and Nina Enea took a class called
Leadership for Social Justice this past semester. After learning about both sexism and
classism, they decided to run a women’s drive at our high school for their final exam—a
yearlong service project bringing awareness about and help to victims of these issues.
After researching several possible women’s shelters, they decided to raise money for the
Sojourner Family Peace Center. As the shelter is a family center, people of all ages and all
genders benefit from their outreach project (especially women and children). Les Miserables
explores issues of sexism and classism that existed in the mid nineteenth century that still
exist today. If, as an audience member, you would like to contribute to this cause, there
will be a table collecting monetary donations set up during intermission. One special part
of making great art in an educational settings are these rich connections between art and
classroom learning. Thank you for your consideration.

BIOGR APHIES
Jaiyanna Bolton (Crew, ‘17) is as excited
as a person can be for Les Miserables! She
is also sad, however, that it will be her last
high school musical. She has enjoyed
devoting her time to stage crew in other
major productions such as: Hello Dolly!,
Footloose, and Grease (to name just a few).
She is proud to say she will be continuing
theater on the “down low” and would
love to thank her “crew family” for being
so supportive and listening to her crazy
outbursts whenever she got overwhelmed
or frustrated.
Emma Buzecky (Cosette, ‘17) is thrilled
and honored to be a part of Whitefish
Bay High School’s Les Miserables. You may
have seen her in Hello Dolly!, in Footloose
as Lulu Warnicker, and in Grease, where
she was the stern and at times kooky Ms.
Lynch. She would like to thank her fantastic
directors for the opportunity to perform
in such a timeless, wonderful musical, and
she would like to thank her family, friends,
and cast for being so supportive these past
four years. At the end of the day, she hopes
you enjoy the show!
Ben Commer (Cast, ’17) is thrilled to be
in his 10th show at Whitefish Bay. After
playing the Narrator in Into the Woods, Ben
is excited to jump into 1800’s France and
play a constable and sailor. Although he
is sad this will be his last winter musical at
Whitefish Bay, he feels glad that it’s one of
his favorites, Les Misérables. Ben hopes you
enjoy the show and feel inspired by it.
Callie Donavan (Cast, ’17) is showing
‘em what she’s got in Les Miserables. Callie
has enjoyed theater since middle school
and is loving her bitter sweet last show
of high school. She would like to thank
everyone who has been a part of this show,
especially her parents. Enjoy the show!
Luke Dragseth (Lesgles, ’19) is very
excited to be part of Les Miserables this
year. He has been in a variety of shows,
plays the tuba for MYSO and the school
band, sings in choir, and participates in
both football and lacrosse. He would like
to thank Ms. Kind-Keppel for making this
show so absolutely amazing.
James Dyer (Bishop, ’18) is super excited
to be a part of his first musical at WFBHS!
He is especially looking forward to playing
the role of the Bishop. He would like to
give special thanks to all of the directors
who have given so much of their time and
expertise to make this show possible. For
James, the friendships he has made on
this production are one of a kind. Finally,
he would also like to thanks his family
for supporting him and putting up with
his near constant singing the last three
months :)
Marcus Ellinas (Javert, ‘19) is marvelously
elated to be participating in Whitefish Bay
High School’s production of Les Miserables.
Although not exactly known for his
imposing stature, he has been a lover of
this musical for many years and has never
been more excited to play such a powerful

and high school, Marcus has acted as Teen
Angel in Grease, Joseph in Joseph and
the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and
Sebastian in The Little Mermaid. Outside
of musical theatre, Marcus enjoys playing
the cello as a member of the Milwaukee
Youth Symphony Orchestra. He would like
to thank Mr. Shoemaker for his musical
guidance through middle school and
high school, Ms. Kind-Keppel for her
ceaseless energy, and Ms. Wozniak for her
contributions to making Les Mis a reality.
He is still looking for that loaf of bread.
Catriona Ellis (Cast, ’17) is so excited
to be a part of Les Miserables! You may
recognize from the Whitefish Bay High
School production of Into the Woods as The
Steward and “bird”. Catriona loves singing!
In fact, she has been in two Whitefish Bay
High School choirs since freshman year.
In her future she will be attending The
University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Lastly,
she wants to thank all of her amazing
friends and family for always being there
for her.
Nina Enea (Cast, ’17) is thrilled to be
singing in her fourth and final musical at
Whitefish Bay High School. In the past,
Nina has been a part of Hello, Dolly!,
Footloose, and Grease. She would like to
thank all of her friends and family that have
encouraged her to keep singing, dancing,
and acting both onstage and off. She
would also like to thank all of her directors
for encouraging her throughout the past
four years. Lastly, Nina wants to thank all
of the wonderful actors and actresses that
she has worked with in her high school
career for truly making her theatrical
experience the best it could possibly be.
Alex Fasseas (Grantaire, ’19) is super
excited to be a part of his first WFBHS
musical. He took part in one middle
school musical, Joseph and the Amazing
Techincolor Dreamcoat, as Joseph. He is
especially looking forward to playing ABC
Society member Grantaire. Alex would
like to personally thank all of his directors
for making this show truly outstanding.
The brotherhood he has taken part of
among his fellow Society members has
been unforgettable. Alex just wants the
audience to enjoy the show and “drink with
him.”
Will Foote (The Foreman/Feuilly,
‘18) feels privileged to be a part of Les
Misérables, his first show at Whitefish Bay
High School. Will began his theatre career
at the Steel Beam Theatre in St. Charles,
Illinois and continued learning through
First Stage Theatre when his family moved
to Milwaukee. Will would like to thank the
pit orchestra, technical crew, and his fellow
cast members for their commitment, as
well as Mr. Miller, Mrs. Armstrong, Anne
and Jim van Duessen, Tina Wozniak, and
Ms. Kind-Keppel, for all of their excellent
direction and guidance. He would also like
to thank his family for their support of all of
his theatrical endeavors.
Matthew Friedland (Cast, ’17) is excited
to be in his first musical. Although he’s
never really sang, he’s played percussion
in the band throughout high school. In
his free time, Matthew likes to play with
his dog, Bessie, and sleep (but he’s always
woke). He would like to thank his family
for all of their support and his friends for
pushing him into such a great musical
experience.
Maya Goldbaum (Madam, ’17) is
extremely thrilled to be a part of Les
Miserables at Whitefish Bay High School
this year. You may recognize her from
several other Whitefish Bay productions
such as Into the Woods, The 25th Annual
Putnam County Spelling Bee, Grease,
The Crucible, You’re A Good Man Charlie
Brown, and Hello, Dolly!. This coming
fall, Maya will be attending University of
Minnesota Twin Cities and is planning
on majoring in Elementary Education.
She couldn’t be more thankful for the
incredible opportunities and communities
that she got to be a part of through the

Maya wants to thank all of her friends,

Brenna Grych (Cast, ‘17) is very excited
to be part of one of her favorite musicals!
After taking a few years off of theater to
pursue sports and other activities, she
is delighted to complete her senior year
with another great theater experience.
Having been a part of a number of other
productions such as The Wizard of Oz,
Annie, Big, Aladdin Jr., and others, this will
be her seventh musical! She wishes to

Liam Hartnett (Enjolras, ’18) is so
happy to be a part of LES MISERABLES.
Favorite shows include: GREASE (Doody),
and THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM
SHAKESPEARE ABRIDGED at Whitefish Bay
High School; TARZAN (Tarzan) and BIG FISH
(Zacky Price) at First Stage; and MACBETH
with Red Lion Theater Co. He thanks his
directors, and the talented cast, crew, and
pit for this amazing experience. Thank you
for supporting the arts!!
Sarah Hasker (Crew, ‘17) is as happy
as a moose in a tub of maple syrup to
be crewing for Les Miserables. You may
have read her name in the program for
Get Smart, Footloose, Charlie Brown, The
Crucible, Grease, Putnam, the Complete
Works of William Shakeapeare Abridged and
Into the Woods. She would also like you to
know that the colour of the sky at 6:08am
and 7:00pm is her favourite colour. Be sure
to settle back, get your beret, and enjoy
the show!
Nathan Kabara (Combeferre, ’20)
is thrilled to be playing the role of
Combeferre in Whitefish Bay High School’s
production of Les Miserables. Nathan has
also appeared in A Christmas Carol as Peter
Cratchit at Falls Patio Players, Ensemble in

Susannah Karron (Cast, ’17) is very excited
to be in Les Misérables as her third and final
musical at Whitefish Bay. She would like to
thank the cast, directors, and crew for all
their hard work. Enjoy the show!
Will Korbitz (Keyboard, ‘17) is ecstatic to
visit the streets of Paris in Les Miserables
as the pit follows the cast throughout this
story. You may (or may not) have seen him
rocking at Bomont and Rydell High with
the pit in Footloose and Grease, but he is
excited about the change of scenery this
year. He would like to extend thanks to
Mr. Shoemaker for his dedication to both
Footloose and Grease, and his teachings
in both pits. He also would like to thank
both of his pit directors this year for using
their time and expertise to support our
theater department. Finally, Will extends
his deepest gratitude to Ms. Kind-Keppel
for her endless dedication to making the
musical the best it can possibly be.
Alex Koziol (Cast, ‘17) is excited for Les Mis!
This is his second musical here at WFBHS.
He appeared as chorus member last year
in Grease. Over the years he has grown
very fond of the theater department, and is
excited for the performance. In his free time,
he likes to play video games, watch sports,
and hang out with his friends. He would like
to thank all of his directors for making this
show possible.
Esther Lee (Flutist, ‘17) is absolutely
elated to join Pit Orchestra once more since
playing piano for You’re a Good Man, Charlie
Brown. Esther plans to continue music in
the Symphony Orchestra of the college of
her choice while majoring in Elementary
Education. She thanks all of the adults
involved for graciously allowing her to take
part in an incredible production, and her
family for continually supporting her in all
of her musical pursuits.
Dylan MacFarlan (Babet, ‘17) Being
classified as nothing but an anti-social
gamer his whole life, his first steps to
proving everyone wrong started with the
Whitefish Bay Middle School Football team.
As he progressed through the ranks in high

school, he thought he would try out the
musical, seeing as his parents kept egging
him on to do so. With enough “persuasion,”
he finally cracked and auditioned for
Grease, and he had a ton of fun playing
the role of a teenager in the late 1950’s.
Now, he’s back to the play the role of a
psychopathic French thug, as well as a
brutal warden. He’s ready to have fun with
all his new friends as well as his directors
and role models. Although it’s his last year,
he’s determined to make the most out of
the whole thing, and look good doing it.
dedicate their hearts to this show for
months, for inspiring her to be a part of
this wonderful community.
Jenn McNeill (Keyboard, ’17) is thrilled
to be making her debut performance in
a theater production as a senior member
of the pit orchestra. Upon hearing that
the school would be performing Les
Miserables, she jumped at the opportunity
to contribute to the show without actually
having to be able to sing well. She would
like to thank all of the adults who made
this show possible due to their countless
hours of work, and, most importantly,
she would like to thank her peers, who
Michael Muth (Bambatabois, ’17) is a
senior at Whitefish Bay, and Les Miserables
is his third high school production but his
tenth show overall! Michael thoroughly
enjoys the memories and teamwork that
comes with large-scale productions and
is excited to try and find theater work
in college next year. When Michael isn’t
rehearsing with the Les Mis cast in the
cafeteria or on stage, he participates as a
ski racer and is a very active member of
the BeyHive (Beyoncé’s fanbase). From
Jess Morton (Assistant Director, ‘17) is
anything but misérables to be working as
Assistant Director in this year’s show. Last
year, she danced her heart out in Grease,
but this year she’s having a ball working
on the show both off and on (surprise!) the
stage. She would like to thank her beloved
directors as well as the awesome cast/crew
for making this such an amazing part of
her senior year!

Maria Olsson (Fantine, ’17) is very excited
to be a part of Les Miserables and to play
the role of Fantine. This is one of her
favorite shows of all time and she is very
thankful for the opportunity. She would
like to thank her directors for all they’ve
done to enhance her performance and she
had a wonderful time working with them.
You may have also seenMaria in her role as
The Witch from Into the Woods.
Jessie Potter (Eponine, ’19) feels
incredibly lucky to play the role of Eponine
and share the stage with the extraordinary
talent at Bay. She is very grateful to her
directors for their guidance, patience, and
musical brilliance throughout this process!
She would also like to thank her family
for being so supportive of her journey
through theater. This experience has given
her the opportunity to develop her voice
and expand her acting skills. Jessie is very
appreciative of her fun and accomplished
fellow actors and actresses, and the
amazing stage crew who makes “Les
Miserables” so very “Les Fabuleux”!!
Alex Quade (Jean Valjean, ’17) is
overjoyed to be back on the WFBHS stage
as he takes part in his final high school
production. After partaking in the school
musicals since he was in 6th grade, Alex
cannot wait to finish off his senior year
with such an incredible show such as Les
Miserables. He would like to thanks his
family, friends, and especially his directors
for their many years of dedication.

Bay High School. He would like to thank
his directors and the rest of the cast and
crew for making this show an amazing
experience. He would also like to thank
his friends and family for their support,
and give a special shout out to Van Rao
for getting him involved in the first place.
Thank you for coming, and we hope you
enjoy our production of Les Miserables!
Beatrice Rasmussen (Madame
Thenardier, ’18) is so excited for this
amazing opportunity to act in her favorite
musical, Les Miserables! After her innocent
roles in First Stage’s Ella Enchanted as well
as Whitefish Bay’s Grease and You’re a
Good Man Charlie Brown, Beatrice is eager
to break out of her comfort zone to play
the part of a 19th century, deceitful conwoman. She would like to thank her friends
and family, and especially Ms. Kind Keppel,
for their patience in the beginning stages
of her cockney accent.
Asa Rao (Gavroche, ’20) is very excited
to play Gavroche in Whitefish Bay’s
production of Les Miserables! He has
previously been in Into the Woods as Jack
and in a barbershop quartet in Music Man.
Asa would like to thank cast, crew, pit,
and directors for this great experience. We
hope you enjoy the show!
Damini Rao (Little Cosette, ‘18) is excited
to be playing the role of Little Cosette in
Les Miserables, one of her favorite musicals
of all time! As well as serving on stage crew
for multiple WFBHS plays and musicals, she
has also performed as Cinderella in the fall

production of Into the Woods. She would
like to thank her amazing cast, crew, pit,
and directors for their dedication to Les
Mis, but most of all, she wants to thank her
parents for their never ending support.
Van Rao (Marius, ’17) is very excited
about playing the part of Marius in WFB’s
production of Les Miserables. He feels
extremely fortunate to be working with
such intelligent and talented people.
Besides Les Miserables, Van has participated
in other theater productions such as
Charlie Brown, Spelling Bee, and this year’s
fall musical Into the Woods. He has put a lot
of work into this production and admires
all the work put in from his fellow actors,
crew members, and pit. He would like to
thank the directors and all of the people
behind-the-scenes for their commitment.
He would also like to thank his mother and
father who have always supported him
through everything.
Evan Schallack (Thenardier, ’18) is
positively tickled pink to be Thenardier in
Whitefish Bay High School’s production
of Les Miserables. You might have seen
him in the complete works of “William
Shakespeare Abridged,” Grease as well as
many other Whitefish Bay shows. Ever since
infancy, Evan knew he was destined to
be Thenardier and would like to thank K2
for making his extremely early childhood
dreams come true. He would also like to
thank his family for putting up with Evan
singing Les Miserables songs constantly.

John Strasheim (Joly, ’17) is thrilled to
be a part of his final show at Whitefish
Bay High School. Being a part of musicals
every year of high school has created longlasting memories he won’t soon forget. He
would like to thank his directors for all they
have done for this cast and crew both this
year and in prior years. He would also like
to thank his family and friends who have
supported him every year.
Sydney Smith (Crew, ‘17) is over the
moon (and probably a bit past Pluto, which
is a planet, by now) to be participating in
this production of Les Miserables. Sydney
has worked on a multitude of shows since
her freshman year, doing lighting for half of
them, which is a part of theatre she is very
passionate about. Sydney would like to
thank her fabulous crew and directors for
making this last musical a memorable one,
and working so incredibly hard to make it
the best that it can be. She would also like
to thank her parents for dealing with the
late hours and crew days on the weekends
and doing many loads of black laundry
over the years. Finally, Sydney would like to
thank gaff tape, for, through all the stress
of shows, managing to hold it all together;
it really is the true unsung MVP of the
show.
Ellie Taft (Cast, ‘17) is so beyond excited
to be a part of Whitefish Bay High School’s
Les Misérables cast. This is only her second
Whitefish Bay High School show, but
you may have previously seen her in
numerous musicals at First Stage Children’s
Theater, including her iconic role as a
melon (confirmed—Ellie was type-cast as
a melon). Ellie would like to thank all the
directors, cast and crew for this amazing
experience and her family and friends
(and boyfriend Aaron Rodgers) for all their
support along the way.
Alec Wellenstein (Courfeyrac, ’18) is
awake and ready to be in Les Mis! He has
been in WFBHS’s Grease and was a member
of the state bound one act “The Complete
Works of Shakespeare Abridged.” Outside
of school, he has been in First Stage’s
Big Nate, Holes, and Jackie and Me. Alec
loves theatre along with biking, Wisconsin
weather, and a good burger. He hopes you
have a grand time at the show!
