1. Why was the Bull Moose Party formed? How did it impact the Election of 1912?
In 1912, TR decided to run for President again and broke away from the precedent of George
Washington. He was upset and believed Taft had not continued the Progressive policies he had
fought so hard to achieve. Taft was the incumbent Republican. Thus, TR could not run for the
Republicans. Progressive Republicans formed a 3rd Party. TR said he was, “as fit as a bull
moose.” The Progressive Party was then dubbed the Bull Moose Party. This impacted the
Election of 1912 because, with the Republicans divided, Woodrow Wilson, the Democrat, easily
won the election.
