Keeping you informed about life at Bordon Junior School
Charity Begins at Bordon Junior School
The first Friday in May signalled another superb ‘Charity Market’ at BJS.
The markets are run exclusively by our pupils
and over the past three years have raised in
excess of £1500.
We are always so impressed with the creativity of the children and the way that they are
able to organise themselves to ensure each
market is a great success.
This week’s ‘Charity Market’ raised a fantastic £127 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Year 4 Bands to
Battle it Out!
Our young musicians in Year 4
will be battling it out to find
who is the ‘star band’ when
they showcase their rock credentials at ‘Battle of the Bands’
taking place on Wednesday
17th May in the BJS hall. (start
3.30pm, FREE entry)
Miruna Hits the High Notes (& the Low Ones!)
Massive congratulations go to Miruna Antoci
in Year 5 who this week got news of her success in achieving a ‘Distinction’ in her recent
piano examination.
We look forward to welcoming Miruna to
perform at an assembly or gala in the future.
Inter-Class Sports Series Returns This Week
On Wednesday, we welcomed back our interclass sports series with a very competitive
pair of netball fixtures between the year five
classes.
The sports series takes place throughout the
year and sees year group classes playing a
variety of sports against each other. The latest sport in the series is netball.
Lunch Payment Changes & Online Orders
Just a little reminder that the price of an HC3S lunch changed after
Easter. The new daily price is £2.15 (£10.75 per week). Please try to pay
for any meals in advance by cash, cheque (payable to HCC) or by using
our online payments system.
The online payments system (SCOPAY) can also be used to order your
child’s lunch in advance for them.
Hi-Ho Success for
Squirrel Class
Well done to those hardworking members of Squirrel
Class (Y5) who have become
the latest class to scoop the HiHo Class Challenge.
They will be selecting their class
prize over the coming days.
Welcome to the next instalment in our occasional series that
delves a little deeper into the work of some of the staff at
Bordon Junior School.
This week, it’s the turn of Maths Manager, Nicola Tierney.
How long have you worked at Bordon Junior School?
I have been at BJS nearly two years now. Before that, I spent
time studying and teaching in schools all over the world.
Sounds interesting...Please tell us a
little more.
I studied a degree in European Studies & Languages at Cardiff University.
I then used my degree working for
companies in the Far East, places like
Vietnam and Thailand.
After that, I lived and worked in France for a number of years
(and had 3 children!) before returning to Thailand where I qualified as a teacher via university in Australia! I then worked in an
international school in Germany before returning to the UK and
a teaching position in Kent and latterly, Bordon.
How are you developing maths at Bordon Junior School?
There have been some very significant changes to the maths national curriculum over the past 3 years and the standards expected of pupils by the end of KS2 are very high indeed.
I am working with all staff and governors to ensure every pupil
attains these standards and many of our pupils surpass these
standards. We’re also using outside experts to come to school
to both offer guidance and to challenge what we are doing.
The way maths is planned and taught is so very different now.
I think it is very exciting time to be at BJS and the school are in a
good position to move forward. I am very keen that BJS is recognised as a school that produces real ‘mathematicians’. Maths
at BJS should be seen as a creative subject not just a rulelearning subject.
We hear you are a bit of a ‘fitness
fanatic’! Is this true?
Yes. I like to run and cycle. I’ve completed half-marathons and cycle regularly to and from school.
I also like yoga, pilates and learnt Salsa
and Latin Ballroom when overseas.
Quiztastic
Well done to MJ Shadey in Mole Class who
correctly told us that the ‘Maypole Dance’
was the traditional dance performed on
May Day (she has even danced it).
To win a FoBS Book Token this week, just
work out the answer to the following question. If your entry is selected, you will be
the winner!
How many sides does a ‘nonagon’ have?
Write down your answer, together with
your name and class, and hand it to the office by next Thursday please.
Just For Fun– Sudoku
Keeping the maths theme going for this
issue, why not have a go at this Sudoku
puzzle.
Fill the grid with your keyboard so that
every row, column and mini box contains
the digits 1 to 6, without the digits repeating.
