THE
BUGLE
Newsletter of the Santa Fe Concert Band --- Volume 16, Number 1 --- January 2014
30th Season is Now History
The band gave eleven performances in 2013 beginning
with a Spring concert on March 23 and ending with the
Holiday concert on December 10. There were forty-three 2
hour weekly rehearsals in preparation for four concerts in
Federal Park, performances for National Holidays including
Memorial Day, July 4th, and Veterans Day, a traditional late
summer evening performance at Kingston Residence, and
prior to the Holiday Concert at The Lensic, a performance
at Santa Fe Place.
Annual Spring concerts for the band started in 1984 and
ran sequentially through 1992 after which there was a
lapse until this tradition was renewed last year on March 23
followed by the inaugural Ride for the Band fundraiser,
raffle, and auction on May 19, 2013.
The midsummer concert on July 28 was rained-out; the
first time a concert didn’t start because of rain in many
years. The rain, always welcome in Santa Fe, started right
with Greg’s downbeat for J. Olivadoti’s Carnival of Roses
Overture; band members and the assembled audience
were soaked by the time everyone reached some shelter
from the downpour.
The SFCB Holiday Concerts have become a Santa Fe
tradition. The first Holiday Concert was in 1984 at St.
Francis Auditorium in the New Mexico Museum of Art and
continued there for a number of years. For the past thirteen
years the Holiday Concerts have been at The Lensic. It
goes without saying the band is indeed grateful to The
Lensic, Santa Fe’s Performing Arts Center, for sponsoring
these performances; the support from The Lensic and the
opportunity to perform there is especially meaningful.
Santa Fe Concert Band prides itself on providing
something for everyone. Concerts are billed as a family
event, all ages are invited to attend and all of the concerts
have Free Admission though donations are always
welcome.

Notes
!
from the President
The band’s 30th Season has concluded and left many good
memories, not the least of which is the impressive
dedication and service rendered by our director/conductor/
founder Greg Heltman. In addition to Greg’s leadership,
every member of the band has contributed to the success of
the organization in one way or another – an ensemble like
ours requires a pretty high level of cooperation in order to
make music and to maintain the health of the organization.
The support from the members is what makes the band fun
and is the basis for our success. Music is of course the
essential element and provides an opportunity for each of
us to share what we love to do. Individuals of all ages, backgrounds, knowledge and ability have banded together to
make music for our mutual benefit and for the enjoyment of
others. Indeed we are blessed with a supportive,
enthusiastic and generous audience. You can’t help but
notice a full page of donors!
Aristotle said it simply: “The whole is greater than the sum
of the parts.” I have no doubt that this will be the case for
the Santa Fe Concert Band’s next season. Don’t miss our
Spring Concert in St. Francis Auditorium on March 8 as well
as the series in Federal Park – a wonderful venue for
wonderful music. We have a Picnic Table project underway
and the focus will be to seek corporate support for the table.
A couple of performance dates and times are yet to be
nailed down but rather than speculate, we ask that you pay
attention to future newsletters and to our presence on the
web for updates.
Hope to see you at our concerts and performances at
national holiday events in Santa Fe. Thank you all for your
past support and please spread the word about the Band.

Pat Kushlis grew up in Northern California
where her father was a school superintendent. Before that, he had been a high
school music teacher and trombonist in
the Sacramento Symphony. Two of his
brothers were also professional musicians.
Pat played in elementary and high school
bands, including jazz band. She studied
oboe in college and has been studying
with Elaine Heltman since coming to New
Mexico. Her instruments include flute,
piano and tenor sax. She studied piano in Washington, DC and
in Helsinki, Finland “to help relieve stress of the job.”
Which brings us to her professional background. After earning a
BA from the University of the Pacific and an MA and PhD from
Syracuse University in International Relations/Political Science,
she became a US Foreign Service Officer with a specialty in
pubic diplomacy for more than 27 years. Pat served in Greece,
Thailand, the Soviet Union, Finland, the Philippines and in
Washinton, DC.
After retiring in 1998, she moved to Albuquerque where she
taught international and comparative politics at UNM from
1999-2005. She moved here in April 2012 and now is building a
home.
Pat co-founded the Santa Fe World Affairs Forum - now in it’s
tenth year. This year’s calendar features “Talking with Enemies,
Cultivating Friends: Diplomacy Revisited” on April 28-9 at St.
John’s College. For more information, http://sfwaf.org. She also
co-writes a blog: WhirledView, www.whirledview.typepad.com
that focuses on current foreign affairs issues and “just about
anything else we decide to write about. Occasionally I write on
music -- so watch out,” she says.
Pat’s professional music experience was in arts management
abroad. As a US public diplomacy officer, she managed visits by
major US performing artists. “My favorites include the Juilliard
String Quartet, pianist Richad Goode and vibraphonist Gary
Burton.” She also had the opportunity to get to know several
major foreign musicians and found them delightful people who
wanted to get to know Americans.
And one memorable moment: “Hearing a Soviet Van Cliburn
silver medalist play The Star Spangled Banner fff after 2 a.m. at
a party at a mutual friend’s apartment in Moscow on July 4
during the depths of the Cold War.”

Don’t miss “Let’s Dance”
Band members who also perform with
the Santa Fe Great Big Jazz Band will
again be providing music for the “Let’s
Dance” party, sharing the stage with the
Community Orchestra from 7-10 in the
S.F. Convention Center. Musicians are
Jan Gaynor and Dorothy Kincaid,
trombone; Vic Perry, trumpet; Bob
Jones, alto sax and leader; and Jeremy
Grant, bass.
With no admission charge, the event on
Saturday, February 15, is a fund raiser
for the Orchestra and promises to be a
fun evening--even if you don’t dance!

Pat is a downhill skier, an amateur
photographer and an inveterate traveler.
When asked about playing in SFCB, she
says what she likes is ”the opportunity to
play in an ensemble again -- nothing
quite like it -- and to get to know some
really nice people.”
On the Lighter Side shared by Pat:

Federal
Park
Picnic
Table
In honor of our 30th Anniversary just
completed, and to contribute to the
venue we so regularly play, the Band
has decided to purchase and donate
a picnic table to the green space at
the Federal Courthouse. The picnic
table will have a plaque which will
commemorate the Band’s 30-year
history in Santa Fe.
We hope the picnic table will be used
and enjoyed by our concert
audiences, as well as Santa Feans
for years to come. For information
and to help contribute (we estimate
the cost of the table will be $1000)
please contact Paul Kennedy at
[email protected].
A Note from the Past
According to an article in Pasatiempo in
1984, the concert band had about 20
members, “Conductor Heltman would
like to see the band triple in size. I
believe it’s possible,” he said. “I think
anybody who ever played in the Santa
Fe High School Band, or any other band,
would be interested.” According to the
article in Pasa which is not attributed to
any writer, ‘The band hopes to make its
debut at the Crimestoppers’ annual fundraising fair in March. After that, the band
will be available to play at community
functions and likely will present
performances on its own.” Today the
band has just a little over 50 active
members.
“We’re here to play music, but also to
have fun,” Heltman said in 1984. “It’s a
nice change of pace to play with people
who are enthusiastic about what they’re
doing.”

Santa Fe Concert Band 2014
Board of Administrative Directors
Tribute to Nancy Scheer,
Treasurer
Nancy Scheer
has been a
member of the
band flute section
since 1988 and
Treasurer for the
past six years as
well as Treasurer
several years
earlier. Hardworking, able and a
wonderful friend to all. She kept the
books in magnificent order and provided
timely and thorough updates of the
finances at SFCB Board Meetings. We
can’t say she will be missed because
she will continue as a member of the
flute section and as the band’s
homepage webmaster. But we can say
thank you for your dedication and hard
work.
A new Board of Administrative Directors was elected by the
membership at the Annual Meeting of the Band on December 3,
2013. Nominees were presented by a three-member
nominating committee; Jan Gaynor, chair and members
Cesario Quintana and Jenny Otto.
Two new board members are Ruth Stiles, saxophone who succeeds
Dan Koenig, Vice President and David Dennison, who succeeds
Nancy Scheer, Treasurer. Other members of the Board are continuing
in their position noting that Bethany Morse was previously known as
Bethany McGee.
Consider Joining Us!
The band is open to musicians of suitable abilities; there are no
auditions. Anyone interested in becoming a member is encouraged to attend a rehearsal or two and to judge their own ability
relative to those of the current band members and to consult
with the band director about continuing with the band. Members
bring their own music stand to rehearsals; Tuesday evenings
throughout the year from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, at the Salvation
Army Hall, 525 W. Alameda. Brief breaks usually occur after the
summer concert season and after the Holiday Concert.
SFCB Kettle Players add to the Holiday spirit, playing at the Super Walmart on Saturday, November
29, while Congressman Tom Udall (far right) and Salvation Army folks greet shoppers. Senator Udall
later joined the Band playing bells.
Players at this time were Jimmy Martinez (tuba), Athena Beshur (clarinet), Dick Hogle (percussion), Bob
Jones (tenor sax), Vic Perry trumpet), and Paul Pease (horn). Others joined the group.
Other 2013 SAK players were: Flute – Jane Abbott,
Christine Beekman, Judy Matthew; Saxophone Cesario Quintana; Trumpet – Bob Krakowski,
Lorenzo Lujan, Nate Moore, Rose Sanchez, Jack
Sullivan; Horn - Willa Nehlsen, John Roehr;
Trombones – Tom Leming, GS Khalsa.
--6--
The band appreciates the service of Bob Krakowski
for another year as coordinator and, of course, all of
the SAK players who help the band show its
appreciation to the Salvation Army in Santa Fe.
Anywhere from four to nine band members played on
four occasions each Saturday from Nov 30 to Dec 21
at different venues including Super Walmart, Kmart
and Smith’s on St. Michaels, and Sam’s Club.
Celebrating
the
Bicycle
The 2008 Santa Fe
Century’s Bike of the Year
was the Michaux bicycle
that back in the 1860s set
the world on the track to
bicycling, the same period
to which the Santa Fe
Concert Band traces its origin. After the defeat by Union
Troops on March 28, 1862 at the battle of Glorietta, Francisco
Pérez, a bugler who served with General Henry Hopkins
Sibley and the Texas Brigade, returned to his home in
Chihuahua, Mexico. He then came back to Santa Fe in 1865
with a small group of musicians later known as the La Banda
de Santa Fe that performed plaza concerts for over 20 years.
His band was the first civic band in Santa Fe. The Santa Fe
Concert Band continues this tradition of volunteer musicians
serving Santa Fe.
In 1866 the US Congress passed a law that created six black
regiments in the regular army which became known as the
Buffalo Soldiers. At the suggestion of General Nelson Miles,
bicycles were used by the 25th Infantry Buffalo Soldiers in an
experiment to replace the horse - The Great Bicycle
Experiment - more or less a failure, although the bicycle did
eventually have a role for use in the military.

Why Music?
I. Music is a Science.
II. Music is Mathematical.
III. Music is a Foreign Language.
IV. Music is History
V. Music is Physical Education
VI. Music Develops Insight and
Demands Research.
VII. Music is all these things, but
most of all,
Music is Art.
That is why we teach music:
Not because we expect you to major
in music
Not because we expect you to play

The Santa Fe Concert Band initiated its own bicycle experiment, Ride for the Band, last year as a fund raiser,
soliciting $100.00 pledges from the riders who chose to
support the band while riding the Santa Fe Century – 25, 50
or 100 miles. Tacked onto the the Ride for the Band was a
raffle and silent auction. This experiment was a great
success in many ways and will be repeated this year during
the weekend of May 17 and18.
But so you will be human
So you will recognize beauty
So you will be closer to an infinite
beyond this
World.
So you will have something to cling
to
So you will have more love, more
compassion,
More gentleness, more good –
In short, more Life.

The SFCB continues one of Santa Fe’s oldest traditions of free public
concerts by volunteer musicians. This tradition dates back to the 1865
when Francisco Pérez, after serving as a Confederate Army bugler in
the ill-fated invasion of New Mexico by Texas forces during the Civil
War, returned to Santa Fe and formed La Banda de Santa Fe. This
musical tradition continued under various names and directors,
including Los Conquistadores from 1909 through 1940, the latter part
of which was under the highly-respected and popular Dan McKenzie. In
1983 Greg revived the tradition of the band and established The Santa
Fe Performing Concert Band, also known as the Santa Fe Concert
Band. Greg is also the Founder and General Director of the Santa Fe
Symphony and Chorus. Indeed, Greg Heltman is the music man of
Santa Fe.
The members of the band and the community are indebted to Greg for
his dedication and commitment to the band. Greg’s wife, Elaine
Heltman, was at one time a member of the band’s percussion section
for several years and we appreciate her service and supporting role.
