They will apply these skills to mathematical descriptions of real-world scenarios and will be able to communicate their conclusions. They will be able to apply algebraic methods in solving problems in business and financial mathematics. They will understand and be able to use various counting techniques and will apply them to elementary problems in probability. They will learn elementary methods of descriptive and inferential statistics and will appreciate the role of statistics in thinking critically about other areas of knowledge. Course Learning Materials: All students must purchase a Course Access Code at the University Bookstore to access the course learning materials online on CourseWare at www.casa.uh.edu. After purchasing and entering an access code on CourseWare the student will be able to access the following: · · · · The textbook (only available online; no hardcopy textbook is required for this course) Electronic Multiple Choice Forms (EMCFs) Online quizzes Additional help materials *The first portion of these materials is freely available until June 4th (see your Courseware account). After the few days, the access code will be required to access the material. Online Classroom: The link to the online classroom can be found on the course webpage titled “Click here to access the online classroom.”. To access the online classroom, you will need to download Blackboard Collaborate (which you will be prompted with when you click on the link). Please log in using your real first and last name. This is crucial for attendance purposes. 1 Grading: The grade break-down is as follows: Exam 1 (Online) Exams 2, 3, 4 Final Exam Homework (EMCFs) Online Quizzes Poppers & Attendance Total 8% 14% each 18% 10% 12% 10% 100% Poppers: Starting June 4th, poppers (which act as an attendance sheet and in-class quiz) will be taken during every lecture. Poppers will come in the form of multiple choice questions which will appear throughout the session. The answers to the questions are to be submitted on your CourseWare account under “EMCF” on the correct popper form. There are TWO popper options: (1) One attends the live lectures and sees the popper questions live, and then logs the answers in the correct popper form. (2) One does not attend the live lecture, and just watches the video recording (posted on the course webpage). Throughout the video, one will be able to see the popper questions, in which they can answer and log their answers in the correct popper form. The popper is due 24 hours after the lecture has ended. This way, those who attend the live lecture get credit for attendance...and those who were unable to attend live lecture will have 24 hours to watch the video on their own time and gain some sort of attendance credit. Online Quizzes: There will be a number of online multiple choice quizzes during the semester, which are found on CourseWare. Each student will be allowed 20 attempts for each quiz and only the highest score will be counted. A student must wait atleast 10 minutes before their next attempt. The quiz schedule will be posted on the instructor’s webpage. Please be responsible for knowing the opening and closing date of each quiz. *Once the quiz is closed, it will not be re-opened. Exams: There will be 4 exams and a final in this class. Exam 1 is an online exam which is available the first day of class. Exams 2, 3, 4 and the Final Exam will be administered in the CASA Testing Center. The Final Exam is comprehensive. The student must schedule their exam on their CourseWare account during registration period (which will be announced in class). There will be several days and several time slots upon which the exam can be scheduled. * There will be no exam make-ups or re-takes. If an exam is missed, the student will receive a 0. The final exam replaces ONE missed exam. * You will be allowed to use the online calculator created by CourseWare which is located in the following URL: http://www.casa.uh.edu/CourseWare/Support/Calculator.htm 2 * If you live more than 100 miles from campus, you may ask permission to have your exams proctored at a location in your area. For more information, see http://www.uh.edu/distance/student-resources/proctoring/ Exemption from the Final Exam: A student can be exempted from the Final Exam if their comprehensive numerical score for the course is an 80 or higher. The final average must be calculated by the official Math Department Grade Calculator which is accessible on CourseWare. If the student is eligible and chooses not to take the Final, they MUST choose exemption before the deadline. The deadline will be announced later in the semester. If one is eligible for exemption but does not select it by the deadline, they MUST take the final. All students with an average LESS THAN 80 MUST take the Final exam. Otherwise, it will record as a 0. Extra Credit: Prior to all 4 exams and the Final Exam, a practice test will be available online on CourseWare. The practice tests can be taken up to 20 times and 10% of the highest score will be added to the exam grade. Note that, like the online quizzes, these practices tests have an opening date and closing date, so please manage time responsibly. *Extra credit will be added to the gradebook at the end of the semester—NOT to the test grade itself posted during the semester.
