BlackDiamond 110 VAC Power Supply Installation Note Overview This installation note describes the BlackDiamond™ 110 VAC Power Supplies. The BlackDiamond 6808 chassis accommodates two power supplies. There are three types of power supplies available: 110 VAC, 220 VAC, and -48 VDC. Both installed power supplies must be of the same type. This document describes 110 VAC power supply installation only. Caution: Service to BlackDiamond 6800 series power supplies should be performed by trained service personnel only. Before installing or removing any components of the system, or before carrying out any maintenance procedures, read the safety information provided in Appendix A of the BlackDiamond Hardware Installation Guide. These power supplies are fully fault tolerant and load-sharing. If one power supply fails, the other power supply will provide sufficient power to operate a fully loaded chassis. The specifications for the power supply are listed in Table 1. Table 1: BlackDiamond 110 VAC power supply specifications Characteristic Specification AC power supply input socket IEC part number 320 C19 AC power source socket NEMA L5-20R Input power 2700 W, 110 VAC, 25 A Output power 2000 W The BlackDiamond chassis power supply slot is designed for standard 5" x 8" footprint power supplies. Each power supply contains a cooling fan. Air enters from the front vents on the power supply and exits from the rear vents of the chassis, as illustrated in Figure 1. This airflow is independent of the airflow through the modules. Because the power supply airflow is separate from the chassis airflow, as illustrated in Figure 1, heated air from the power supply will not be sufficiently vented if the power supply fans fail. The 110 VAC power supply has two IEC 320 C19 inputs on the front of the power supply. Both power cords must be connected for the power supply to operate properly. Caution: Each power cord must be connected to a dedicated 20 A 110 VAC outlet. This outlet cannot be shared by other devices. The front panel also provides status LEDs. Table 2 describes the LED behavior on the 110 VAC power supplies. Table 2: 110 VAC Power Supply LEDs LED Color Indicates AC In Green Powered using both inputs Amber Powered using only one input, or input voltage is less than 90 V Off No input power Green All DC outputs are operational Amber One or more DC outputs failed, or one AC input failed Off No power DC Out Each power supply has 5 DC outputs that connect to the chassis backplane. These 5 outputs provide power for the entire chassis. Installing the Power Supplies To remove a power supply, follow these steps: 1 Remove the two AC power supply cords from the power supply and retention clips. 2 Unscrew the power supply using a #1 Phillips-head screwdriver. 3 Disengage the power supply by pushing down on the locking handle and rotating the handle out and down, as shown in Figure 3. Caution: The power supply weighs approximately 30 pounds (14 kg). To install a power supply, follow these steps: 1 Ensure that the replacement power supply is right-side up, and the locking handle is open. 2 Slide the power supply into the bay. 3 Secure the power supply by rotating the locking handle up until it clicks in place. 4 Tighten the screws using a #1 Phillips-head screwdriver. 5 Attach the AC power cords. While hot-inserting a second power supply, ignore the LED behavior and status indication from both power supplies until the power supply is fully seated and secured. There will not be any interruption in the functionality of the system. BlackDiamond 110 VAC Power Supply Installation Note 4
