Literacy The children will study stories from familiar settings and learn the importance of describing a setting in a story. The children will then write their own description of a setting. The children will also explore a range of adventure and mystery stories and work on plot, structure, description and character. They will then write their own adventure story. They will learn about authors and letters where they will explore aspects of an author’s style and analyse letters written for different purposes. In addition they will explore and write shape poems. Ongoing activities include reading, spellings, listening to stories and poems, speaking and listening, grammar and punctuation activities and handwriting practice. LQ – Can I write a letter in role as a rich or poor Tudor child? History The children will learn about the lives of different types of people living in Tudor times. They will also learn about Henry VIII and why he married six times. Numeracy The children will work on place value, partitioning three digit numbers, as well as ordering and rounding numbers. They will develop strategies for mental and written calculation of the four operations and will apply their knowledge to solve real life problems involving money. They will also measure and compare objects using metres and centimetres. In addition they will learn to classify and describe 2D and 3D shapes referring to their properties and symmetry. LQ – What was Tudor money like? Art Portraying Relationships – The children will investigate how paintings, prints, photographs and other images including figures, communicate ideas about relationships. They will use composition skills to make a double portrait that conveys ideas about themselves and their relationship with another person in their lives. Teeth and Eating - The children will extend their knowledge of their personal health and how this relates to diet. They will learn how teeth are related to diet and the importance of dental care. The children will use a range of experimental and investigative work. Magnets and Springs - The children will experience forces including attraction and repulsion between magnets, compression and stretching of springs and stretching of elastic bands. The children will learn that these forces have direction and can vary in size. They will also learn which materials are attracted to magnets. Geography LQ – What types of food did the Tudors enjoy? The children will learn about modes of transport developed and used in the Tudor period and learn about famous British explorers. They will also learn about places Henry VIII liked to visit in our local area. LQ – Where did Henry VIII live and enjoy spending time? LQ – Where did the Tudors travel to? How did they get there? LQ – Why did Henry VIII marry six times? LQ – What was the difference between the lives of rich and poor Tudors? Science Who were the Tudors? ICT The children will learn how to create and use the information in a database. Using software they will investigate the creation of sound using a computer. LQ – What was technology like in the Tudor period? LQ – Can I research the Tudors on the internet? Autumn Term Year 3 2013 RE PE The children will enjoy and learn team games and develop skills and tactics. Through gymnastics they will create and perform fluent sequences on the floor and using apparatus. LQ – Did the Tudors participate in physical activity? LQ – Can I investigate the relationships in Tudor paintings? The Christian Family – The children will begin to understand that the church is the family of God and that we join this family through the sacrament of Baptism. Mary, Our Mother – The children will learn that God called Mary to be the Mother of Jesus; they will learn the Hail Mary and begin to understand it. They will understand Advent as a time of preparation for the coming of Jesus. Topic Day LQ – Can I design a Tudor rose? Design Technology LQ – What did Henry VIII believe? During the ‘Tudor Day’ the children will experience the food, fashion and entertainment that the Tudors enjoyed. LQ – How did the Tudors celebrate? Sandwich Snacks - The children will learn basic food preparation techniques and ways of combining components to create simple food products. They will develop their designing and making skills by using their own experiences, evaluating existing products and learning to combine components according to taste, appearance and texture. Places to Visit Music The children will participate in composing, singing and playing instruments with music teacher Mrs Ley. They will join in with activities in preparation for Christmas.
