Working safely
Elephant Trolley

Select the most suitable trolley for the task i.e. six (6) or eight (8)
RPC (Returnable Plastic Crates)
••
Check equipment is in safe working order and free from damage prior to use
••
Never use faulty equipment. If faulty, tag out of service and report to maintenance
••
Check your route to ensure you have a clear path of travel and good visibility
••
Never overload the trolley and ensure the load is secure before moving
••
Do not leave trolleys unattended on the shop floor
••
Use SMART manual handling techniques

Grasp the handles with both hands

Push the trolley, keeping the green wheels closest to you

Keep your elbows tucked in to avoid manual handling injuries

••
Giraffe trolleys are only used for chilled products
••
Because of its height and weight, Giraffe trolleys are not to be used on the selling floor
••
Use gloves and jacket when working in the coolroom
••
Ensure Returnable Plastic Crates (RPCs) are secured in the trolley at all times

Never stack RPCs more than six (6) high, including in the van and on the trolley or dollies

Never load RPCs more than 15kgs
••
Ensure stacked RPCs are locked into each other for stability
••
Always keep RPCs clear of the vehicle doorway when entering and exiting the rear of the
vehicle
••
Never lift more than a single loaded RPC unless another team member is present to
assist
••
Do not brace RPCs against your body when collapsing, place the RPC on a stable surface
••
Push RPC sides away from body with palm of hand

Hand Trolley
••
Hand trolleys are not to be used on stairs
−−
Carry products in individual shopping bags and deliver in smaller quantities
••
Ensure the base RPC is placed within the support plates of the trolley
••
Ensure the stacked RPCs are locked into each other
••
Trolleys must be stacked below your shoulder height, to a maximum of 6 RPCs, so you
have clear visibility when travelling
••
Push the trolley when moving forward and going down hill. Only pull the trolley when
going over kerbs or slight bumps in the path
••
When loading hand trolley inside the vehicle it must be flat with the wheels in the air or
safely secured in an upright position
Dolly
••
Only move one dolly at a time
••
Ensure you have a clear safe path of travel
••
Push with two hands, keeping the green wheels closest to you
••
Never stack more than 6 RPCs per side on each dolly
••
Never stack empty dollies above shoulder height
Esky
••
Use a team lift to load the esky into the vehicle
••
Keep the esky clear of the doorway when entering and exiting the rear of the vehicle
••
Ensure the lid is fully closed and secured
••
Do not double stack eskies

Coles Online customer orders are picked in store - several orders are picked at one time and placed into RPC crates held within
the trolley, this presents a risk of manual handling injuries when loading and moving the trolley. The correct use of the equipment
will reduce the risk of injury to our team members.
