Year 6 camp Our Year 6 campers are looking forward to the many families who are going to visit tonight. I (Libby) visited on Tuesday night. While this may sound like ‘an old girl’ and repeating what is often said – it really is amazing to see how these children become a community of wonderful citizens. They show amazing support of one and other as they each meet different challenges. What I was also impressed with is the way they show our values of respect and responsibility in action. They show respect for others and their environment simply by the way they take responsibility to include others – or give space, clearing up after games and activities, adapting to the unexpected and having a positive attitude. These are life- long learning skills that employers want. What a wonderful team of parent helpers who have joined the teachers. They are all marvellous! What a treat it is to see how the children continue to grow and develop into themselves as they settle into the school year. I have continued talking with children this term and they constantly remind me what is valuable in their eyes and what may not be. The things we get given as gifts or buy have a ‘value’. Yet, sometimes the qualities we offer can be of greater value and yet cost No money! 14-18 March I am talking about the gift of your time and attention which children always remember and enjoy. It is very easy to be swayed by the demands of life so that time becomes precious and your attention becomes distractible. Yet to a child these are part of what encourages and supports their growth and development. When we choose to give our time and attention to our children a biochemical response occurs allowing a very important release of oxytocin a wonderful hormone which when released by the body has a feel good factor to it. This allows a heightened response in the young developing brain to occur. For the child these benefits are continuous and ongoing. Children learn through your interactions with them, the art of love and caring. Are children a nuisance or a pleasure? A child without the right care and attention does not flourish. There is no doubt that stress has an impact on our lives, including our children who show its effect on them more openly than we do as adults.
