Question:
What would you do if you wanted more land?
The English colonists moved west, however, Native
Americans were already living on that land.
A Wampanoag leader,
Metacom, fought against the
English. The English named
Metacom King Philip. These
battles became known as King
Philip’s War. After a year of
fighting the English won.
1700s
Colonists moved west
along the rugged land
near the Appalachian
Mountains because land
along the Atlantic Coast
became too expensive.
This land became
known as the
backcountry.
Mid 1700s
Colonists moved further west across the
Appalachian Mountains and into the Ohio
River Valley. Both Native Americans and
French colonists were living in the Ohio River
Valley.

Then English sent George Washington to
deliver a letter to the French asking them
to leave the Ohio River Valley. Four
months later, George Washington returned
with a response from the French.
NO!
The French said
the Ohio River
Valley belonged
to them and
built Fort
Duquesne.
The English
believed this land
belonged to them
and sent George
Washington back
to build a fort in
the same place
the French built
Fort Duquesne.
On the way to Fort Duquesne, Washington
attacked and defeated a group of French
soldiers. He returned to Fort Necessity, a fort
he had started to build a few days earlier.
The French attacked Fort Necessity.
Washington surrenders.
At a meeting in Albany, New York, England
asked the Iroquois League to join in their fight
against the French.
Hendrick, an Iroquois leader said,
“The British and French were
“quarrelling about lands which
belong to us, and their quarrel may
end in our destruction.”
Braddock and his army moved very
slowly, building roads and bridges as
they headed through the wilderness to
capture Fort Duquesne.
Braddock believed that fighting like
the Indians was cowardly.
He kept his men in formation.
This led to his death!
England sent more soldiers to fight in North America.
The Iroquois agreed to join the British side. They
hoped that victory would help the Iroquois maintain
control of their lands. (This did not occur.)
Quebec was the capital of New France. British
troops captured Quebec.
