Create an Autumn Tree Blow Painting Materials you will need: • • • • • • • Watercolor set Large paintbrush Black or brown paint or ink Cup of water A cup for paint Key words A straw Warm colors Thick white paper 1. To begin, protect the surface of your work area with newspaper Find Inspiration from the Museum’s Collection Frederic Edwin Church, Autumn, c. 1845, Oil on canvas. or a plastic table cloth. 2. With your watercolor set, create the background with warm colors (red, orange, yellow) and brown. Use a lot of water on your paintbrush and cover all of the white space. 3. Let the watercolors thoroughly dry before beginning the next step. 4. Put the black or brown paint or ink into a cup and mix it with water to thin it out. 5. Paint the trunk of the tree with a paintbrush. Paint it from the bottom of the page up to the middle of the page. 6. Pour a small amount of the paint or ink onto the top of the tree trunk 8. With the straw begin blowing the paint or ink upwards and outwards. As the paint thins out add more onto where you have already blown the paint and continue creating branches. 9. You will know your painting is complete when you have run out of breath!
