The rest of the day is free to relax. You may like to head out to do a little exploring on your own as there is plenty to see and do. In the evening meet your tour escort and fellow travelers and enjoy a welcome dinner. (D) July 2: Sat: Tour Moscow Begin your Moscow sightseeing tour at Red Square, dominated by St. Basil’s Cathedral and by the massive red walls of the Kremlin where the buildings date from the 15th century to the 20th. Visit the State Armory to see treasures collected by Russian tsars. See Moscow University, Russia’s oldest, which was founded in 1755. Drive through the Arbat shopping district and Moscow’s wide boulevards to stroll through GUM, Russia’s largest department store. The balance of the day is at leisure. (B) July 3: Sun: Tver & Novgorod Depart for Tver, an ancient trading port nestled on the banks of the Volga River. Enjoy a short sightseeing tour to see Putevoy Dvorets, built for Catherine II as a resting place on her journeys from Moscow to St. Petersburg. End the day in historic Novgorod, founded on the River Volchov in 862 AD. It was an ancient river-trading town where people from the north sailed along the river to buy goods from the Russians. (B, L, D) July 4:Mon: Novgorod & St. Petersburg A morning sightseeing tour of Novgorod starts at the Kremlin, which was built in the 15th century to resist raiding Turkic-Mongol armies and visit the imposing 11th century St. Sophia Cathedral and the Yaroslav Court. In the afternoon, travel north to St. Petersburg, built on the River Neva. Peter the Great used Amsterdam as his building model and today the city spreads over 100 islands. An introductory tour takes you to Peter and Paul Fortress, with its grim history and magnificent cathedral created for the tombs of the Romanov tsars. Next visit the huge St. Isaac’s Cathedral, opened in 1858 and now a museum. (B, D) July 5: Tue: Hermitage Museum Peter the Great founded the city in 1703 and hired Europe’s best architects and craftsmen to build a city reflecting the opulence of Russia’s rulers. See the highlights of the Hermitage Museum, which holds nearly three million exhibits. The Winter Palace was built between 1754 and 1762 and was the official residence of the tsars until the Russian Revolution in 1917. See its luxurious State Rooms, built by tsars who wanted to show off their great power and wealth. An optional tour visits Petrodvorets, Peter the Great’s Summer Palace. In the evening you may take part in a folklore performance. (B) July 6: Wed: Leisure Time in St. Petersburg Today you have a day completely at leisure for independent activities. With over 90 museums in the city there is no shortage of cultural attractions. Be sure to take a stroll along Nevsky Prospekt or explore the many waterways, by boat or on foot.
