Unit 5: POETRY What is our place in NATURE? * Poetic Form: LYRIC POEM A lyric poem is a short poem in which a single speaker expresses personal thoughts and feelings. Lyric poems cover many subjects, from love to death to everyday experiences. Like many other lyric poems, each of those you’re about to read creates a strong, unified impression. LITERAL LANGUAGE Literal Language is language that reflects the dictionary definition of words. It forms a factual statement. Example: “a tree sheds its leaves in autumn.” FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Figurative language expresses an idea through a more imaginative use of words: Example: “A tree mourns its lost leaves in autumn.” Here are some types of figurative language poets frequently use: Personification gives human qualities to an animal, an object, or an idea. Similes compare two unlike things using the word like or as. whispering trees, angrily marching ants The stars flamed like torches. Metaphors compare two unlike things without using the word like or as. The stars were torches. LYRIC POEM My puppy is velvet She wiggles and licks And tumbles to my arms Like a leaf in the wind What makes this a lyric poem? The poem is SHORT, shares the THOUGHTS and FEELINGS of the speaker and creates a strong impression of its SUBJECT- the puppy. SIMILE What is the simile used in this poem? “And tumbles…/ Like a leaf” Describe the meaning of the metaphor. It is compared to a leaf in the wind. The puppy, like a blowing leaf, may seem to fly easily from place to place. METAPHOR What is the metaphor used in this poem? “[The] puppy is velvet” Describe the meaning of the metaphor. The puppy is very soft.
