This lesson is designed to introduce and compare and contrast the Hinduism and Buddhism religions.

 Identify the major characteristics of Buddhism
 Compare Hinduism and Buddhism
 Construct a Venn diagram comparing the 2 religions
 Explain the differences between Hinduism and Buddhism

Activities:

Introduction (5 minutes)
I.
As the students walk in have a mix cd playing music from both religions
II.
On the board have the question “What do you know about Hinduism and Buddhism?”
a) As the students walk in have them do the warm up in their journals
b) After everyone has had 1 or 2 minutes to complete the warm up ask the question “what do you know
about Hinduism and Buddhism?” and have the students answer.
Transition (3-5 minutes)
I.
Explain to the students that they will be creating a Venn diagram (have a Venn diagram example
already on the board) comparing and contrasting Hinduism and Buddhism.
a) Make sure all students have an understanding of what a Venn diagram is, if not be sure to explain
b) Tell students that they will be using the COWs to look up information on the two religions (i.e.:
history, place of origin, sacred text, spiritual leader, etc.)
i.
Tell the students that they are to fill out their Venn Diagram with the information that
they find on the internet
c) Before they get the COWs tell them “I’m giving you the decision to work by yourselves or with a
partner. But if things get out of hand and I see that people aren’t doing the assignment then
everyone will work alone and it will be silent.
d) Let students sign out a COW

While students are getting the COWs pass the handout with the websites and the
information they are supposed to be looking up out
Activity (30 minutes)
I.
Have the students create a Venn diagram on a piece of blank computer paper

a) While students are getting COWs pass out the handout with the website information and the
specific information the students will look up
III.
Let the students work on the assignment
a) While the students are working on the assignment, I will walk around the class assisting students
that need help
b) Student will be able to ask questions and get guidance while doing the work
Conclusion (10 minutes)
I.
Tell the students to finish up the last thing they’re working on
a) Have students log off and shut down the COWS
b) By rows have the students put away the COWS

When everyone is seated again, ask “What did you find most interesting about today?”
a) Let a few students answer

Answers should reference the differences between what they thought about the religions
before and after the assignment; the intriguing aspects of both religions.
After the discussion explain that this was an introductory assignment into the unit over religion, and
that they will be studying the major religions of the world.
a) Explain to the students that the Venn diagram they created would be used at the end of the unit to
write an essay comparing and contrasting the different religions
Tell the students that for tomorrows lesson they will be discussing the Hindu and Buddhist religion
more in depth
Ask students if there are any questions
a) If there are answer them
Have the students turn in their Venn diagrams as they are walking out the door.
Before the next class period I will check that the Venn diagrams are accurate and have it as a
participation grade for the day.

Assessment (Be sure to make sure assessment reflects TEKS objectives cited above):
Formative:
During the activity, students will be asked:
 To identify the history of the two religions
 To identify the sacred text of the two religions
 To identify who the spiritual leaders are
 To identify where in the world the religion is most practiced
Summative:
At the end of the unit students will be asked to write a comparative essay over 3 religions of their choice. There will
also be a test that is mandated by the district.
