SPOTLIGHT LONDON, UK Spotlight Youth Space Client: Area: Budget: Completion: Poplar Harca 2,180sqm £7M December2013 SPOTLIGHT IS A WORLD CLASS CREATIVE YOUTH FACILITY WHICH HAS BEEN SHAPED BY THE ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT OF YOUNG PEOPLE, THEIR VIEWS AND NEEDS. THE YOUTH SPACE AIMS TO BRING THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF TOWER HAMLETS TOGETHER TO STRETCH IMAGINATIONS, EMPOWER, EXTEND AMBITIONS AND REALISE THEIR POTENTIAL. It is located on the site of Langdon Park School in Tower Hamlets and is used by the School’s 6th Form during the school day. The project’s key stakeholders were all consulted throughout the briefing and design development process: Young People; Poplar HARCA; Langdon Park School; London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Poplar Boys and Girls Club, however it is the young people who have been at the heart of everything. SITE PLAN 1:1250 NORTH ELEVATION SECTION NTS NTS The outcome of the initial briefing sessions was for the building to have a strong ‘creative industries’ focus to it with music and performance highlighted as being very important, alongisde the re-provision of the Lansbury Boxing gym within the Centre. The young people who were consulted strongly felt that the Youth Space should have a separate and distinct identity to the School. To address this, the design concept is of two interlocking cubes, which create a central triple height multi-use performance space. This space forms the heart of the building, with circulation wrapping around it. The cube facing the School shares a language with the new School buildings in terms of scale, appearance and materiality; whilst the larger, outward facing cube reflects the Youth space with a bespoke embossed and indented metal cladding.
