Pajama and Movie Day – Friday, December 19
Friday, December 19 is Pajama and Movie Day at Manz. Students are encouraged to
wear their pajamas to school and we will watch a movie all together in the gym. The
students will still go outside for recess, so please make sure the pajamas are
appropriate for the cold weather. Please also make sure your student follows these
guidelines:
1) No slippers or footie pajamas (shoes must still be worn)
2) All pajamas must meet district dress code guidelines
Classroom Parties on December 19
Each classroom will have a winter party on the afternoon of Friday, December 19. Please know that if
school is closed for some reason that day, the classroom parties will not be held when we return to school
in January. Let’s hope for no snowstorms or severely cold weather!
Message from our Principal - Mrs. Grant
We are going to take a break from my usual principal’s message to share some great news
about some Manz students and staff. We are proud of our Manz Mustangs
accomplishments, so be sure to continue reading on page 2 of this newsletter!
Watch our January newsletter for continued information about assessments we give at
school and how those assessments help us to plan for your child.

Mustang Accomplishments!
We have had lots of exciting happenings at Manz lately. Read on for details, and remember you can
always find important Manz news on our website linked in the header on page 1 of the newsletter.
Manz fourth grade teacher, Mr. Winters, recently was highlighted on the news. Mr. Winters'
"Peanuts" collection in his classroom has long been a favorite of his students. Many of the characters in
"Peanuts" are relatable to both students and adults, and who doesn't love Snoopy? Check out the story:

Manz fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Tracey Tumaniec, is the recipient of the Wisconsin Agriculture in
the Classroom's Outstanding Teacher Award. On Tuesday, November 25, Mrs. Tumaniec was
presented with her award in front of her class and family. Mrs. Tumaniec was selected by members of the
Wisconsin Farm Bureau's Agriculture in the Classroom program to receive this award to recognize her
efforts in teaching students the importance of agriculture. Mrs. Tumaniec will also be Wisconsin's
nominee for the National Excellence in Teaching Agriculture Award. Congratulations, Mrs. Tumaniec!

Congratulations to Julia in Mrs. Decker’s first grade class on winning the Chippewa Valley
Symphony poster contest for their December concert with a piece titled "Frozen." See it below and
on their posters around town!
On December 2, 2014, Manz students and staff gathered to dedicate a Peace Pole.
Mrs. Flo Sheridan asked a group of fourth grade students to create a tribute to her late
husband, Dr. Terry Sheridan, who was principal at Manz from 1985 to 1990. Five
students worked together under the guidance of
artist Jo Ellen Burke to create a Peace Pole. A Peace
Pole serves two purposes: to honor someone as well
as to bring beauty and inspiration to the area it is in.
The students spent a great deal of time learning
about Dr. Sheridan from his wife. They learned
about his likes, his interests, and his impact on
Manz School. The students then designed and
created the Peace Pole to reflect the things they
learned about Dr. Sheridan. We are honored to have
a Peace Pole for Dr. Sheridan at Manz and are very
thankful to Dr. Sheridan’s family for this donation.

Sick Child Guidelines
With winter upon us, we have hit cold and flu season. In an effort to maintain the good health of all of our
students, please keep your child home from school if he/she is sick. This will reduce the overall number
of illnesses among our students. If your child exhibits any of the following symptoms at school, a
parent/guardian/emergency contact will be notified to come and pick up the student:
 Temperature of 100.5° or more
 Diarrhea
 Vomiting
 Persistent coughing
 Draining or spreading rash
When a child is sent home from school due to one of the above systems, he/she should remain home the
next day also as our policy requires students to be free of these symptoms for at least 12 hours before
returning to school. Please keep your child home if he/she currently has or has had any of these symptoms
in the last 12 hours. If you have any questions about these guidelines, feel free to contact our school nurse,
Ms. Hugo at 852-3937.
Art at a Glance: Message from Ms. McKenzie
This section of our newsletter is intended to keep families updated on what is being taught in the art room
and encourages you to discuss the topics at home. We are always working to build our art vocabulary, so
see if your student can tell you what the definition of the bolded words are.
K- Shapes and Pattern: The Kindergarteners are learning more the role shapes and pattern have in art. We are
working together on identifying different types of shapes and how to use them along with lines to make a pattern.
1st- Marc Chagall and how artists get their ideas: The 1st graders have been discussing how artists get their ideas.
There are 3 ways artists get their ideas, see if your child can name them for you. (Real life, dreams, and
imagination). We then discussed Marc Chagall’s work and created a silly dream piece of artwork.
2nd- Winslow Homer: The 2nd graders have been discussing Winslow Homer’s artwork, specifically his seascape
pieces. We worked together to create a lighthouse seascape and also boats and ships on the sea.
3rd- Ancient Egypt: The 3rd graders have been learning a lot about Ancient Egypt and identifying Egyptian art. We
have discussed what sarcophaguses, Pharaohs, hieroglyphics, and Egyptian Gods look like. We also briefly
talked about King Tut and his life as the youngest Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt.
4th- Georgia O’Keeffe and Native American Folk Art: The 4th graders have been learning about the life and art
of Georgia O’Keeffe. As Georgia O’Keeffe focused on her art she decided to move to New Mexico to focus on the
nature theme of her work. The students also learned about the Native American population in New Mexico and the
type of art they were known for, folk art.
5th- Pop Art- The 5th graders have learned about Pop Art and Andy Warhol. The process of printmaking played
a very big role in Andy Warhol’s art so the students created a Pop Art inspired animal portrait.
Manz Hallway Artists:
Each month Ms. McKenzie hangs new art in the hallway outside of the art room and gym. These pieces
are just a few of the wonderful pieces created by the Manz artists. Ms. McKenzie makes an effort to try to
have different students have the opportunity to have their art displayed every month. By the end of the
year, every Manz student will have their artwork hung and feel proud of their work.
