Suspense in
Night
[CCSS.ELA.9-10.W.3]
In order to create a good narrative, you must build suspense.
Suspense
is
the intense feeling that a reader
goes through while waiting for the outcome of certain events. It basically leaves the reader holding their breath
and wanting more information. Writers use a variety of
methods of building suspense including:
❖ chronological events
- events are arranged in the order in which they occured.
❖ foreshadowing
- a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story.
❖ flashback
- interruptions that writers do to insert past events in order to provide background or
context to the current events of a narrative.
Another way that writers build suspense is by building rising action after the introduction of the major conflict.
In this chapter, Wiesel creates suspense by describing several situations in which he is in danger.
