Siemens Wind Power Americas facilities

Siemens Wind Power Americas
facilities
Hutchinson, Kansas: Wind turbine
nacelle assembly facility (under
construction)
Overview
Land: 108 acres
Building: 300,000 square feet
Boulder, Colorado: Wind turbine R&D
Center
Overview:
Opened in 2008
Approximately 10 employees (40 when
fully staffed)
Location: Salt City Business Park in
Hutchinson, Kansas - an excellent
location with regard to logistics with
good highway and rail access in the
heart of the wind belt. Barge transportation is also available at Port of
Catoosa – 250 miles by rail.
Aerodynamics and blade efficiency are
key focus R&D areas
Production: Initially, production of
nacelles and hubs for 2.3-MW wind
turbines. The production capacity for
the new facility is planned at 1,500
MW per year by 2012. The first wind
turbine nacelles are scheduled to leave
the plant in December 2010.
The goal of the center is to lower the
cost and increase the value of windgenerated electricity by increasing energy production, lowering turbine cost
and improving predictability.
Workforce: More than 400 jobs at full
capacity (2012)
Construction: Plant is targeted to
achieve LEED Gold certification
(energy and resource efficient).
Answers for energy.
Joint research project with U.S. DOE’s
National Renewable Energy Laboratory
in Boulder, CO. The Siemens SWT-2.3101 test turbine was commissioned in
October 2009.
Other R&D efforts in the U.S.:
Siemens also has recently announced a
research effort with Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory to conduct research
on wind farm output prediction modeling. This effort is expected to add value
to the wind turbine market by allowing
for improved predictability of wind farm
output and generation, as well as
improved load balancing and reserve
requirements for utility grid operators
and wind farm owners.
Houston, Texas: Service Center
Opened in 2006
Approximately 400 Houston-based
employees, many of whom are
deployed over all active project
sites in the Americas
Training, service tools and parts
storage/distribution.

Siemens Wind Power business in
Americas
Started with one employee in 2005
Approximately 150 employees today,
covering marketing, sales, projects and
transportation, supply chain management, engineering, safety and quality
for the wind power business in the
Americas.
