The Sixth Grade Teachers

Summer Reading Assignment
Name: _______________________________________
In sixth grade, we will be sharing and discussing all different genres of
books and poems. You will grow as a reader all year long! To begin our
conversation at the start of our year, please select three (3) books you have
read over the summer and complete these Summer Reading Summaries and
Reader’s Responses. Please make sure your work is neatly written. You may
type this assignment, as well.
You will be using this assignment to create your first book project of the
new school year. You will need to bring in ONE of your summer books and this
packet for the first week of school.
We have included a book list to guide you in your selections. If you are
looking for some great summer reading recommendations, you may choose a
book from the provided list. If there are books that you just can’t wait to read,
but you do not see them on this list, you can certainly read those, too. The goal
is to keep you excited about reading, all summer long!
We hope you have a summer filled with great reading, and we look
forward to learning all about your summer reading lives in September.
Sincerely,
The Sixth Grade Teachers

What is a Reader’s Response?
A “Reader’s Response” is written and focuses on the reader’s thoughts
and reactions to a piece of text. In a reader’s response, you can include
the following:
 An important quote (with page #) and discussion of what it means to you or
why it is important to the book.
 Personally connecting to the character’s actions and reflecting on what you
might have done in his or her situation.
 What parts you enjoyed or disliked about the book and why. How might
you change it?
 When you have an emotional reaction to an event or character’s actions.
 Predictions of what is going to come later in the story or the next book in
the series.
 Questions you are asking yourself or you would ask the author or
characters.
 How it relates to another book you have read.
Make sure you:
 Use a conversational tone- as if you are discussing the book with a
friend in a book club or literature circle.
 Include details.
 Use paragraphs.
Now you can try it!! 
Select one of your summer books and
try writing a reader’s response, below.
(You may also type it on a separate piece of paper.)
