Reinstatement Plan for the Friars Bay drop shaft site
Planning condition 18 of application no. LW/537/CM(EIA) states;
‘With the exception of preparatory works, no construction work shall take place at the Saltdean East,
Portobello, Meridian Car Park, the Highway or Friars Bay drop shaft sites until a detailed restoration
scheme for that site including timescales for the implementation of the works has been submitted to
and approved in writing by the Waste Planning Authority. In each case, all landscaping detailed within
the approved scheme shall be subsequently implemented in accordance with that scheme and
maintained for a minimum period of five years from the completion of the shaft construction work,
unless otherwise agreed in writing with the Waste Planning Authority.’
As part of the Brighton & Hove wastewater treatment scheme, a temporary shaft will be positioned on the
Promenade at Friars Bay, Peacehaven as part of the works to construct the new Long Sea Outfall.

1.0 Preparation of the site.
It is anticipated that the concrete of the Promenade will not be removed by the works, apart from the actual
break out of the shaft itself and any holes required for site hoarding. This will involve saw cutting the outline
of the shaft to enable a neat edge when breaking the concrete out with any holes for the hoarding being cut
out by small cores.
1.1 Reinstatement of the shaft.
Once the pipe jacking works for the new outfall are complete, the shaft will be backfilled with 1.7m of mass
concrete above the crown of the pipe. Then selected chalk arisings shall be used to backfill the shaft to 1m
below the finished Promenade level. A reinforced concrete slab shall then be poured to cap off the shaft to
500mm below the finish level of the Promenade. The remaining 500mm shall be concreted to tie in with the
existing levels of the Promenade.
The concrete finish shall match the existing Promenade concrete.

1.2 Reinstatement of remainder of site
Any imported stone and material will be removed from the area.
Any bolt holes created as part of the works in areas outside of the shaft footprint shall be filled with a concrete
repair compound.
