Jesuit universities seek not only to educate the mind, but more deeply to inspire and support the
formation of a vocation which allows one to love and to serve others. If this is a standard by which the
ideal of Jesuit education is to be measured, our honoree epitomizes the Jesuit ideal of what it means to
be a well-educated, generous, and loving person –fundamentally oriented towards improving the lives
of other people, the world in which we live, and inspiring others to live their dreams.
Timothy Barnard’s life has focused on seizing dreams and opportunities and turning them into
realties in his personal, professional and philanthropic endeavors. Mr. Barnard has demonstrated an
unparalleled work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit that, over the years, has built both communities
and structures on foundations of empowerment, mindfulness and strength. His pioneering vision,
leadership and generosity have made an indelible mark on Gonzaga University and its ability to shape
the lives of its students now and into the future.
Originally from Paterson, New Jersey, Mr. Barnard attended Villanova University, Gonzaga-inFlorence, and Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. After some extensive world travels, Mr. Barnard
landed in Montana, and with only $1,000, two shovels, a pick, and all of his worldly possessions
in the cab of a pickup truck, he set out to launch his own construction company. That inspiration
ultimately grew into a multi-million-dollar heavy civil contractor with seven associated companies,
rated by Engineering News Record among the top 400 contractors in the United States, the top 200
environmental contractors and in the top 10 in six construction categories. His companies undertake
construction and engineering projects on a massive scale, all over the world.
Mr. Barnard first became involved with Gonzaga University when he attended Gonzaga-inFlorence in 1971. He felt strongly that his experience there was life-changing — a renaissance of its
own within the Heart of the Renaissance. “The journey was more important than the destination,” he
said at the 50th anniversary celebration of the program in Florence, Italy. “We found true friends and
relationships with depth and warmth in each other. We came to realize that it was ‘the renaissance
within’ that was so important.”
He has served on Gonzaga’s Board of Trustees since 2000, and was the recipient of Gonzaga’s
Distinguished Alumni Merit Award in 2004.
Mr. Barnard’s success is deeply rooted in his partnership with his wife, Mary, who has worked
alongside Tim to raise their six children and to guide the direction of their life together. Several of these
followed in their parents’ footsteps, becoming Gonzaga graduates and successful in their own right.
Both Tim and Mary have been broadly philanthropic, serving on many boards and giving generously
to numerous organizations — from groups that serve people with disabilities and the homeless, to
educational institutions. Their dedication to Gonzaga University has been truly transformational,
informing key strategic institutional decisions, providing scholarships, supporting athletics, deepening
global engagement, and enriching our Jesuit Community for more than 33 years.
Because of his personal commitment to the advancement of Jesuit and Catholic education; the
creativity, work ethic, vision and heart for service and for the leadership he and his family have provided
to this institution over so many years, Gonzaga is proud today to bestow upon Timothy Barnard the
degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.

Sherman Alexie
Telling stories is not easy . . . . Fiction can be dangerously misleading or distracting.

Harari argues that shared “fictions” are essential for human communities to exist even as they
challenge them to evolve (Sapiens). In embodying this idea, Sherman Alexie’s fiction fosters, shapes
and tests communities through characters who grapple with, endure and transcend the crippling
effects of poverty, addiction, abandonment and racism.
For Sherman, a Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Indian who grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation
in Wellpinit, Washington, vague dreams of being a writer became real when he encountered a poem
by Adrian C. Louis (Paiute), containing the line, “I’m in the reservation of my mind.” Reservations he
knew; the idea that they might be constructs, fictions in the broad sense of that word, was electrifying
and led to a writing career that would be marked by rarified success.
Since completing his undergraduate degree at Gonzaga and Washington State University, Sherman
Alexie has become a national voice for the fictions of Native Americans, taking the craft of storytelling to new levels of teaching and entertaining. From novels, such as The Absolutely True Diary of
a Part-Time Indian, to collections of stories, like Blasphemy; from films, like Smoke Signals (based on
the short story “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven”), to children’s books, like Thunder
Boy Jr,; and from collections of poetry, like What I’ve Stolen, What I’ve Earned, to his thought-provoking
stand-up presentations, this now-urban Indian is celebrated for his versatile and lyric voice, garnering
high praise and many awards for his courageous and challenging work. In turn, he has leveraged his
good fortune into creating and supporting programs such as Longhouse Media, which teaches Native
American youth film-making skills in the service of cultural expression and of social change in and
through media.
Sherman Alexie is a literary provocateur who calls attention to the rich traditions of native
people and to their struggle to live and thrive in a society indelibly marked by the searing scars of
misunderstanding, greed, bigotry and cruelty. His art challenges stereotypes, creates and supports
critical dialogue on intercultural communication and insists on the inclusion of Native American
peoples and communities in the definition and understanding of our culture. The passion and
compassion that burst from Sherman Alexie’s poetry and fictions have the power to enlighten and
to heal. He elicits hope from stories of individual and communal desperation; his abiding sense of
humor and his unwavering optimism wring joy from desolation; and his lyrical craft proves again that
technical skill honed by practice becomes art. His writing consistently fosters a mature commitment
to the dignity of the individual and illustrates what it can mean to be a person for and with others, as
his characters both experience and contribute to the attunement, compassion, and generosity that are
integral to the demonstration of this basic Jesuit value.
To honor the ways in which his fearless encounter of real social issues, his drive to achieve the best,
and his generous willingness to share what he has learned make Sherman Alexie a messenger of hope
and of new possibilities for us all, Gonzaga University proudly bestows upon him the degree of Doctor
of Letters, honoris causa.

In Memoriam
Graduating students, faculty, and administrators are wearing a white ribbon to
commemorate these departed members of the class:
Caitlin Breeze loved cats, zebras, spontaneity and adventure and was well known for
her enthusiasm and unyielding affirmation of others. Raised in Spokane, Washington,
she began her education career at Spokane Falls Community College before coming to
Gonzaga to study business and spend a semester abroad in Florence, where she fostered
a passion for travel. Caitlin died July 30, 2016.
Emile “Daniel” de la Mar was a flame of inspiration for others, leaving a legacy of
inclusion and authenticity that persists in the hearts and minds of all who crossed his
path. His love for adventure, intelligence, and drive for learning helped him succeed
as a civil engineering student. Daniel grew up in Denver, Colorado, and loved outdoor
activities like biking and skateboarding. He died April 24, 2016.
Bevin Matt was a natural student who crafted deeply thoughtful philosophical papers,
zoomed across his high school track field and made each and every member of his
enormous extended family feel like they were his favorite relative. He grew up in Ford,
Washington on the Spokane Indian Reservation. He embraced his heritage, which
included Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Arlee and Pauquachin nationalities. Bevin was Reardan
High School’s valedictorian, and entered Gonzaga with hopes for a law career. Bevin died
October 3, 2013.

Degree candidates who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and who have completed at least
sixty-four Gonzaga undergraduate hours with a minimum grade point average of 3.50 are academically distinguished at
the Commencement ceremony. The University further distinguishes between three levels of honors by specific grade
point averages: Cum Laude for a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.69, Magna Cum Laude for a grade point average
between 3.70 and 3.89, and Summa Cum Laude for a grade point average of 3.90 or higher. For the Commencement
ceremony, honors are based on the cumulative grade point average as of the fall semester. Final honors are based on
graduates’ final grade point averages after their final term of academic course work and are printed on the student
diploma and transcript. Final honors designations may differ from Commencement honors.
For candidates with 48 to 63 Gonzaga semester hours and a minimum 3.50 grade point average, with Distinction honors
are designated.

Academic Regalia Accessories for
Co-Curricular Involvement
Out-of-class involvement is a significant part of the Gonzaga student experience. Traditionally, the Student
Development Division has acknowledged particular involvements, affinity groups, or students from diverse
backgrounds with cords, pins, or medallions at graduation. This regalia is awarded at celebrations prior to the
ceremony:
ACTSIX Scholars wear a graduation medal provided to scholarship recipients by ACTSIX.
African Americans wear a kente stole provided by the Spokane African American Community organization.
Latino/a students wear a sarape provided by the Spokane Hispanic Business Association.
Living and Learning Community members wear a silver and blue cord provided by the Housing & Residence Life office.
LGBTQ+ members wear a rainbow tassel provided by the Lincoln LGBTQ+ Resource Center at the annual Lavender
ceremony.
Multicultural Honor Society members wear a blue/white cord provided by the Unity Multicultural Education Center.

Gonzaga University Seal
The original seal adopted by the
Univerasity in the early nineties
depicted an eagle with protectively
spread wings surrounded by the
name, Gonzaga University. The
new seal, designed about 1914,
took the form of a coat of arms
and has been used on all degrees,
medals, and formal documents
since that time.
The eagle of the original seal was
retained. It perches, with wings
still spread protectively, atop a
coat of arms in the form of a shield.
The dexter chief hatchment
contains two gray wolves with
forepaws upon a black pot and
chain on a field of white. This
represents the House of Loyola
(lobo-y-olla, i.e., the wolves and
the pot), Ignatius Loyola being
the founder of the Society of Jesus
(Jesuits). The pride of the House
of Loyola was that it fed the poor
and kept the wolf from its door.
In the bottom right hatchment
(sinister base), there are depicted
the arms of the House of Gonzaga,
a purple cross sustaining an
inescutcheon, the lions of
Florence, and three purple bars
for the ecclesiastical dignity of
the House. The four falcons in
the corners of the escutcheon
represent the hunting prowess of
the family.
In the upper right (sinister chief),
in the colors of Spain, are seven

red bars on a field of gold, given
to the House of Onez by the King,
because seven brothers of that
House distinguished themselves
in the service of Spain.
In the bottom left (dexter base),
are a sunburst over the Spokane
Falls, a pine tree and an Indian
tepee. All are representative of
the Spokane community, which is
named for the Spokane Indians.
Spokane means children of the
sun.
The eagle in the crest is the
American bald eagle of the
Republic and the symbols above:
the IHS is the name of Jesus,
His cross, and the three nails of
His crucifixion. In the crest the
nails and lettering are black with
a surrounding halo of gold. The
in-escutcheon in the center of
the shield carries an immaculate
white G on a field of royal blue, the
colors of the University.
The scroll carries the letters
AMDG, which stand for Ad
Majorem Dei Gloriam (To God’s
Greater Glory), the motto of the
Society of Jesus as given to it by
its founder, Saint Ignatius Loyola.
Under the scroll is the year of the
University’s founding, 1887. The
wreath of bay leaves on the right
represents classic renown and the
wreath of oak on the left signifies
civic pride.
Academic Regalia
College and university graduation ceremonies are
resplendent with color. One is likely to see almost
every color in the spectrum, representing scholarly
achievement in many academic fields.
Based upon the costumes worn at universities in the
14th and 15th centuries, today’s American academic
dress was standardized in 1895. It includes the
familiar square mortarboard cap symbolizing the
commitment of the scholar to a life of building. It has
a tassel which may be black or an appropriate color
(e.g., gold for those with a doctoral degree, purple
for law). The custom of shifting the cap’s tassel from
the right side to the left signifies the conferring of the
degree. Three styles of gowns and hoods represent
bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees.
The bachelor’s gown usually has long pointed
sleeves, while the master’s gown has a long crescent-
shaped sleeve. The doctor’s has a very full, bellshaped sleeve with three velvet bands matching the
velvet facing of the gown opening. The velvet on the
doctor’s gown often is the color appropriate to the
wearer’s field of study.
Of the three styles of hoods, the doctor’s is naturally
the most elaborate. All three hoods are made of
material to match the gowns and are lined in the
official color of the institution which conferred the
degree, with a chevron used for a second color if
needed. (Gonzaga’s colors are blue and white.) The
colored velvet binding indicates the academic area
in which the degree was received—white for liberal
arts, yellow for science, drab for business, purple for
law, light blue for education, scarlet for theology, and
so forth.
School Banners
Academic Convocation starts with a procession
featuring the college and school banners being
ceremoniously placed on the altar. The banners
represent the various schools of the University
and are carried in order according to the dates the
schools were established. The College of Arts &
Sciences is the original school, established in 1887,
and the flag colors combine the white crest for
liberal arts and the yellow background for science.
The School of Law was started in 1912 and uses
purple as its symbol. The next flag, drab in color
(drab might best be described as light cocoa brown),
represents our School of Business Administration,
which officially began in 1921, followed in 1928 by
the School of Education with its light blue flag. The
orange-colored flag from 1934 denotes the School
of Engineering & Applied Science, while the 1975
flag for the School of Professional Studies unites the
white of liberal arts with the apricot of nursing. The
banner for Gonzaga’s newest school, Nursing and
Human Physiology, established in 2013, features sage
and apricot colors. Each flag is highlighted by a cross
in Gonzaga blue upon which is placed the University
seal.
Presidential Chain of Office
The Gonzaga presidential chain of office, sometimes
referred to as the presidential medallion, is worn
as part of the president’s academic attire at
ceremonial occasions such as Commencement
and Convocations. The chain is worn around the
neck and drapes down across the chest and the
back. Its design combines the seal of the university
and important dates that represent the university’s
history. The medallion with the university seal
and the name is the focal point of the chain. 1887,
the School of Law–1912, the School of Business
Administration–1921, the School of Education–1928,
the School of Engineering and Applied Science–1934,
Gonzaga in Florence–1963, the School of
Professional Studies–1975, Foley Center–1990, the
School of Nursing and Human Physiology–2010, and
the Center for Global Engagement–2013.
