treeless.
Open grassy woodlands consisted of scattered River Red Gums,
Drooping She Oak and in more fertile areas, Manna Gum with a grassy,
tussock understorey.
Along river valleys, characteristic stands of magnificent River Red Gums
and Blackwoods could be found with a shrub or tussock grass
understorey.
Remnants of these plant communities survive on roadsides, along rivers
and in small reserves scattered across the landscape.
Quick Facts

Indigenous plants are those which
naturally occur in your local area or
occurred locally in the past.

Less than 1% of Victoria’s native
grasslands remain.

Planting indigenous plants in your
garden helps to create habitat for
local wildlife.
When planning and planting your garden, consider using indigenous
species from the area in which you live. The list on the back of this page
will help you to select species most suited to your area and need.
The southern part of Golden Plains
Shire is known for its wide open
plains and deeply incised river
valleys with remnants of once
extensive native grasslands and
woodlands.
