THE PARENT NEWSLETTER OF BISHOP EUSTACE PREPARATORY SCHOOL
From the Headmaster
Winter greetings from the
campus of Bishop Eustace
Preparatory School to all of
our friends and family! I hope
the love of Jesus envelops you
and your family and gives you
warmth and peace during this
blustery season.
Registration for the Class of 2019 will be held on
Tuesday, 3 March in the evening. We look forward
to seeing the new Crusaders and their families as they
join us for a fun night on campus.
As we prayed together at the St. Vincent Pallotti Mass
in January, we remembered the students as they began
their second semester; the families who support
them; and the administration, faculty and staff who
work tirelessly to keep Bishop Eustace the premier
preparatory school in South Jersey.
Two important meetings occurred in the first week of
February: 3 February was the Senior Trip Parents’
Meeting at 7:30 p.m., and 4 February was the Junior
Trip Parents’ Meeting also at 7:30 p.m. Thank you
to all the students and parents who attended these
meetings. Both trips will take place in mid-March: the
seniors will enjoy a hopefully sunny week in Orlando
while the juniors will travel to Washington, DC for
two days of history and fun!
Other important days occur in the second week of
February: St. Valentine’s Day on 14 February; and
President’s Day which is celebrated over a long
weekend 13 February through 16 February. In
addition, the Mass for Ash Wednesday will be held on
18 February.

Just a reminder that our spring musical Damn
Yankees is sure to be a smash hit. The show will be
held Thursday through Saturday, 5-7 March, at the
Collingswood Theatre. Show your support for our
students in the Performing Arts and I guarantee a
night of laughter and fun.
Anticipation is in the air as the spring Fashion Show
arrives on 26 March at Adelphia’s in Deptford, NJ,
and the sophomores look forward to the thrilling
Sophomore Cotillion on 28 March!
May the peace of our Savior be with you and your
family. As a fireplace provides the glow and warmth
of a crackling fire, may the love of Jesus, his mother,
Mary and all the saints become a solace and a comfort
to you.
Sincerely yours in St. Vincent Pallotti,

Campus News and Notes
The Reverend Marco Martorelli Chapter of the National Honor Society celebrated their 40th induction
on Wednesday, October 29. This was a very special occasion.
Headmaster Brother James Beamesderfer, S.A.C., opened the ceremony with a prayer reflecting on the
forty years of the Reverend Marco Martorelli Chapter. He praised Principal Cyril Bleistine’s 40 year involvement
with the society. Mr. Bleistine was on the committee that instituted the National Honor Society at Bishop
Eustace under the direction of Father Angelo Palermo, S.A.C.
Gabrielle Bianchi, the Parliamentarian, was the Master of Ceremonies ushering in 56 new members.
Gabrielle lit the white candle as a symbol of truth and knowledge. Vice-President Nicholas Barnaba spoke to
the inductees about the role of service in the National Honor Society. The red candle symbolizes the service
each student performs for the society. This service represents the spirit and remembrance of St. Vincent Pallotti.
Tracy Gao, Secretary, addressed the members about scholarship. She told the audience that knowledge and
wisdom were ultimate virtues. Tracy lit the gold candle. Next, Treasurer Arnaud Zimmermann stated that
character during high school is under development, changing and challenging each student. Arnaud’s candle
was green. The final speaker was Curtis Bechtel, President. Curtis lit the purple candle as a symbol of leadership.
Curtis expressed to the new inductees that leading can be difficult and the inductees are called to be role models
and even the little thingS matter.
Principal Cyril Bleistine, along with moderators Marie Santomauro and Karen Clemens, presented the
students with their certificates of membership into the Reverend Marco Martorelli Chapter. The newly-inducted
members recited the National Honor Society pledge and Mr. Bleistine congratulated them, declaring that it
was incumbent on them to seriously uphold the values and traditions of this Society. Finally, the night ended
with the singing of the “Alma Mater” and a reception. A special thank you went out to the Faculty Advisory
Committee: Mr. Toppin, Mrs. Berthin, Mr. Threston, Mrs. Collier and Mr. Milicia. Also special thanks to Mr.
Gianfortune and Ms. Weir for their time, effort and musical talent.
The following students were inducted into the Reverend Marco Martorelli Chapter of the National Honor
Society.

did not donate brought in food for the blood drive and also had someone to donate for them. Freshman and
sophomore parents supported the drive earning an hour of service for their child. Mark your calendars; the next
blood drive will be held March 11, 2015.
Thank you again for saving 273 lives!!! In March, let us make it over 300 lives.
Congratulations to the following students who had
excellent scores on the National German Exam given
in January.
German 2: Juliet DiFlumeri , Dan Hullihan , Jordan
Kosylo (highest score at Bishop Eustace), Chloe
Lamotta, and Madison Powell.
German 3: Aidan Wright, Katarina Ruehlicke (highest
score at Bishop Eustace).
In November, several students from Bishop Eustace
auditioned for All South Jersey Chorus. Over 700
students from South Jersey auditioned and fewer than
half were accepted. This year, two students will be
representing Bishop Eustace, Senior Chelsea Reyes
and Freshman Kelly Gurcsik (right). Chelsea has
represented Bishop Eustace as a member of the All
South Jersey Chorus for the past four years.

Carnival Prizes Needed
Black and White Week will be held April 27 to
May 1, and Student Council members are busy making
preparations for what should be an exciting week
of events. Part of our week is the School Picnic and
Carnival, and we are once again asking for your help in
stocking our “prize tent.”
Last year, thanks to your generous donations,
students were able to choose from gift cards to area
stores and restaurants (a definite favorite!), dorm room
necessities, stuffed animals, and fun dollar store items.
If you have any items that you would like to donate to
the prize tent – big or small, new or gently used – we’d
love to have them! All donations should be brought
to Mrs. Williams’s office by April 22. Thanks for your
support!

ATTENTION SENIORS:
When you receive admissions decisions please
go to Colleges in Naviance and record the decision.
To do this you look for Colleges tab at the top of your
home page in Naviance (Family Connection). Go
to Colleges I’m Applying to screen. On this screen
click the pencil to the right of each college and record
the admissions decision in the result section. Check
waitlisted or deferred if applicable. Bring your letter or
acceptance email into SPS and show Ms. Kovencz so
that you can make a flag. Also do not delete or cancel
any applications for which you have already requested
your transcripts. If you have questions see your
counselor or Ms. Kovencz.
METHOD TEST PREP IN NAVIANCE
As part of our Naviance College Counseling
System, the school has purchased an online testing
preparation program for our students. The program
which is called Method Test Prep is accessible on
the homepage of Naviance. You can find the website
under the Links section. If students have not already
registered for Method Test Prep they should see their
6
CRUSADER NOTES
counselor as soon as possible. Students can prep for
both the SAT and ACT tests on their own schedule
using this program. As with any online program,
Method Test Prep is available 24/7 for our students
via their individual Naviance account. Please take
advantage of this free resource to prepare for your
admissions tests.
COURSE REGISTRATION for 2015-2016
All juniors, sophomores and freshmen should
complete the Course Registration process by March
20. Detailed directions can be found on Crusader Net.
Students are meeting with their counselors to discuss
their course selection options. The following is taken
from an email that was sent to all parents of students in
grades 9, 10 and 11:
We encourage all students to take the most
challenging curriculum possible while maintaining
excellent grades. This is a very individualized decision.
For some students it means following our challenging
college preparatory curriculum. For some students if
may mean adding an honors course or two next year.
BISHOP EUSTACE PREPARATORY SCHOOL
For some of our students it may mean choosing AP
courses. Please take a look at your child’s semester
grades and work with them to consider an appropriate
array of courses for the upcoming academic year.
The Course Description Booklet is available on
Crusader Net. All students will be meeting with their
counselor in the coming weeks to discuss their options
and to make decisions regarding their curriculum for
next year.
Honors/AP applications are due on February
12. Students will turn in their applications to their
current teacher in the subject area of the Honors/AP
class to which they are applying. Past grades, which
will be needed to complete the application, can be
found on Crusader Net. The students must use their
login to access the information that they need.
Online Course Selection will begin on February 25
and close on March 20. Please encourage your child
to complete the registration process before March 19.
Course Registration is accessed through Crusader Net
using your child’s login information.
Thank you for your interest and effort in
working together to assist your child in choosing the
most appropriate courses for next year. Please do
not hesitate to contact your child’s counselor with
questions. We look forward to working with you as we
plan for the next year at Bishop Eustace Preparatory
School.
JUNIOR PARENT COLLEGE PLANNING
CONFERENCES
In January, all junior parents received a letter
inviting them to schedule a conference with their child
and their child’s counselor to discuss college planning.
Many parents have scheduled their conferences and
we have enjoyed meeting with them. For those who
have not yet scheduled a conference we look forward
to meeting with you in the coming months. We would
like to have most of the conferences completed before
the Easter break to enable families to use some of the
time off from school to look at colleges.
CONSIDER VISITING COLLEGES DURING THE
EASTER BREAK
It is not too early to begin to visit colleges.
Underclassmen may want to schedule a tour to get
www.facebook.com/BishopEustace
some perspective on urban vs. rural schools, schools
of varying sizes and the issue of distance from home.
If you are vacationing in another state or another
part of our country take some time to visit a college
or two. Call ahead to the admissions office to get
the tour schedule and the times for information
sessions. College websites usually have easy access
to this information. Juniors should be planning visits
to their top choices. Parents keep your eyes open for
safety and security issues as well as accessibility to
classroom buildings and dormitories. Students should
ask questions about class availability and general
satisfaction with campus life.
SOPHOMORE CAREER EXPLORATION CLASSES
We began our exploration of careers
and interest with the PSAT results in December.
Sophomores created accounts at the College Board
and reviewed their score reports. In January, the
sophomores completed the Do What You Are Survey
in Naviance which explored personality and related
careers and majors. In February, they will be meeting
with their counselors to choose courses for next year.
Sophomores will also complete a Career Inventory
and discuss summer programs and other activities to
prepare for junior year and the college search process.
In April, sophomore parents will be invited to attend
the SPS Sophomore Parent College Planning Night.
For your planning purposes the program is scheduled
for April 15, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Crusader Hall.
SPS PRACTICUM STUDENT
We are pleased to welcome Ms. Allison Steen ‘09
to SPS for the second semester. Allison will be with
us once a week from January through May as she
completes her practicum for her MS in Counseling
from Villanova. Allison graduated from Bishop
Eustace in 2009. She completed her undergraduate
degree at Loyola University Maryland. Allison will be
working with Mrs. Cranston’s students in groups and
with other students using Naviance. She will also be
working on some projects to enhance our program for
our students.
