THE RAVEN’S NEST Friday, October 28, 2016 LONGFIELDS DAVIDSON HEIGHTS S.S. As a result of Tuesday’s lockdown (due to an issue at a neighbouring school) we thought it would be a good idea to review some of the OCDSB’s basic emergency procedures. “Lockdown” occurs if there is an active threat in the school. All teaching stops, hallways are cleared, classrooms are secured and windows are covered (where possible). Students and staff move to a secure area of a classroom and sit quietly against a wall. There will be no communication from the school during a lockdown. In a real situation police will be surrounding the school, and there will be no access to the school from the general public. “Secure the School” is called if there is an emergency situation where the halls need to be cleared (i.e. there is a medical emergency and medical staff need access to a student or staff). Students are asked to clear the hallways, teachers keeps students in classrooms, but teaching continues. The school will be able to communicate in a Secure the School. “Shelter in Place” is called if there is situation in the community that is not an immediate threat to the school (i.e. there is an animal sighting in the playground). Students are restricted to staying inside the school, however everyday school business continues as usual. The school will be able to communicate in a Shelter in Place. As with every experience (drill or real situation) we reflect on our procedures, after the fact, and identify any gaps in our emergency procedures. We then go about correcting them. We will continue to have regular lockdown and fire drills to continue to refine our procedures to do our best to ensure the safety of our school community.
